How President Buhari Will Battle Atiku In 2019 - APC Governors Speak Out

All Progressives Congress (APC) governors are taking the 2019 battle to Peoples Democratic Partty (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar.
They are confident that President Muhammadu Buhari will defeat the former vice president in next year’s election.
The governors, after a meeting yesterday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, said they would engage in issue-based campaigns to convince Nigerians to vote Buhari.
The Atiku camp, also yesterday, said it was ready for an issue-based campaign and went ahead to raise some questions which it said would dominate the campaign and for which they are demanding answers from the government.
To demonstrate that Buhari also wants to campign based on his performance, the President received a 1042-page achievement compendium from Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha, shortly before yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
Mustapha said the compendium was a summary of policies and programmes implemented between 2015 and 2017 as approved by FEC, adding: “It is a valid and vivid proof of the giant strides by this administration.”
According to him, the document will serve as first hand information for the President on projects and programmes implemented.
The document, he said, will also serve as a reference point, lending credence to the fact that the administration has fulfilled its campaign promises.
Governors at the meeting with the President, which was also attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and SGF Mustapha, are: Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Kashim Shettima (Borno) and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos).
Okorcha told reporters that the APC was not jittery because of Atiku’s emergence as PDP’s candidate.
He said the governors came together “with our followers and supporters to further inform the world of our readiness to deliver Buhari in the 2019 election.
“This is just basically the message we have come and to say that Mr. President is more than ever ready for the entire exercise.
”Our election this time will not engage on castigations or talking. We will be taking on issues, Nigerians are tired of political abuses; what we want to be talking about is issues, the track records of people involved in our elections.
”Nigerians are very wise now, before they elect anybody they will ask questions, what has been your track records, who were you before, who are you now and everything about you. And for that reason we are confident that in 2019, APC will go through.
”We have also looked at the issues concerning our primaries. In every democracy, you should expect a kind of disagreement and we have kindly requested that something be done to bring warring factions together so that we can have a united party to face the challenges ahead and we are happy that will soon take place.
”Most of the problems have been resolved, except for one or two states where we have issues and where it becomes more difficult, we ask for Mr. President’s intervention in the matter.
”We are talking about reconciliation, what is important to us is that we must never go into this battle, a divided family and we want to make sure that all governors are intact, all National Assembly members are intact while going into this battle. We will never speak differently, we will speak as members of the party,” he said
On whether the controversy surrounding the Zamfara State APC primaries was part of the discussion, he said: “Zamfara is one of the issues that we have addressed also.”
He added: ”We can’t be jittery and history is there to speak, history is very important and it is there to speak so like I said we are not going to engage in this verbal war with anybody, we will be talking about issues. If we say look, you are not good, we’ll  tell you what we can do and we cannot do and what others cannot do.
”APC is not going to join in those talk shop but right we are discussing issues of what our party can do for our people.”
Mustapha said the government had performed. “This morning, I had the privilege of laying before the council a compendium of the policies, the programmes and the projects initiated and implemented by this government in two and half years. A total of one thousand and 42-page document, not stories, facts of what we have been able to achieve.
”This campaign will be driven by issues, this campaign must be predicated on what you are able to bring to the table for the people of Nigeria. It is not going to be a noisy campaign; anybody that is preparing for noise should be prepared to receive defeat in February of 2019.”
The Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation also picked up the gauntlet by raising issues yesterday.
In the posers, the Atiku camp challenged the administration to name one project it initiated, started and completed in the last  three years.
Besides, it also challenged the Buhari group to name one youth in President Buhari’s cabinet.
The Atiku camp also challenged the Buhari campaign and the APC to name one promise that President Buhari has kept or one Southerner heading any of the security agencies.
It added: “Name one terrorist arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned by the Buhari administration. Name one Buhari government official arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned over their many budget padding scandals.
“Name one member of the Buhari administration fingered in corruption that was fired, arrested and currently facing trial. Name one former President or Head of State that has not been blamed by President Buhari for the precarious state of the economy he led us into.
“Name one year that Nigeria’s GDP grew faster than her population under Buhari (for 16 years of PDP administrations, Nigeria’s GDP always grew faster than population growth).
“Name the initiatives the Buhari government has put in place to address Nigeria being named the world headquarters for extreme poverty under Buhari.
“Name one initiative the Buhari government has put in place to address Nigeria having the world’s highest number of out of school children (13.2 million according to the United Nations Children Fund)
“Name the date the Ogoni cleanup will begin. Name what President Buhari has done with the ¦ 13 trillion loans he has taken in three years (compared to the ¦ 6 trillion borrowed by the PDP in 16 years). Name the real owners of the Ikoyi Apartment billions.
”These are the issues the Nigerian people want to hear about, not insults from a Presidency and a party that has spent three years in office only to preside over Nigeria’s first ever recession in 25 years.
”We urge the Buhari administration to remember that it is this disinterest in real governance and focus on trivialities that caused Bill Gates to look President Buhari in the eye and tell him that ‘your economic blueprint does not address Nigerians’ needs.”
The group said the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation runs an issue based campaign where refined language and cerebral arguments founded on facts are used to disseminate the vision of its candidate.
“Which is why we call on the Buhari Campaign Organisation to waste no time in taking the #BuhariChallenge in clearing the air on these knotty issues bothering the minds of Nigerians.”

Court Orders Senate President, Bukola Saraki To Do This For Ovie Omo-Agege

Senate President Bukola Saraki and Ovie Omo-Agege
The Federal High Court on Thursday warned the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over the imprisonment proceedings initiated against him by the Delta-Central senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, Punch has reported.
Recall that Omo-Agege had initiated the committal proceedings praying that Saraki be sent to prison as punishment for flouting the May 10 judgment of the court which ordered him (Omo-Agege) to be reinstated from illegal suspension and be paid all his accrued benefits for the period of the voided suspension.
The hearing of the committal proceedings was scheduled for Thursday, but the alleged contemnor and his lawyers were absent from court.
Ruling on a request by Omo-Agege’s lawyer, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), to have the committal application heard despite the absence of the defence, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba said he was more inclined to giving the Senate President another chance to “remedy the alleged wrong” or appear in court to defend himself.
Justice Dimgba noted that the application was truly “ripe for hearing,” as argued by Izinyon, as the court’s records showed that Saraki had been served with the motion on notice and hearing notice for the Thursday’s proceedings via a newspaper publication of September 25, 2018 as earlier ordered by the court.
The judge, however, said he would give Saraki another chance to remedy the alleged wrong or appear in court to defend himself.
He also directed Izinyon to write the Senate President and the legal department of the Senate, informing them of the adjournment of the proceedings till October 18.

We Wrongly Advised Nigeria – World Bank Admits Mistake

The World Bank says it “has to take some responsibility’’ for advising Nigeria and other African countries to invest more in roads, railways and energy rather than in education and health.

The World Bank President, Mr. Jim Yong Kim, made this known while briefing the media after the launch of the 2018 Human Capital Index, which ranked Nigeria 152nd out of 157 countries believed to be committed to investing in human capital.
Kim briefed the media on Thursday at the ongoing International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Annual Meeting in Bali, Indonesia.
“We provide quite a bit of support for Nigeria in terms of health budget. But we feel that the overall spending on health is just far too low, 0.76 per cent of GDP.
“Also, the educational outcomes in Nigeria are very very poor.
“Nigeria is one of the most important countries not only in Africa, but in the world and so we feel that it will be extremely important for Nigeria to really go on a different level altogether in terms of their commitment to investing in human capital.
“I think that the World Bank has to take some responsibility for having emphasised hard on infrastructure, roads, rails, energy for a very long time and I think that changed 20 years ago.
“But there is still then the bias that says we will invest in hard infrastructure and then when we grow rich, we will have enough money to invest in health and education.
“We are now saying that that’s really the wrong approach, that you’ve got to start investing in your people right now.’’
HCI seeks to raise awareness and increase demand for interventions to build human capital and accelerate better and more investments in people.
Kim said that through the International Development Association, the World Bank had, since 2015 increased funding for Nigeria and other African countries towards alleviating poverty.
The message here is that Heads of State and Ministers of Finance have to take responsibility.
“What has happened is in many African countries, if they don’t receive grant-based financing, they just simply don’t spend on health and education.
“So we hope that this is a loud wake-up call for leaders throughout the African continent and especially in Nigeria.”
According to the human capital index, children born in Nigeria stand the chance of being 34 per cent as productive when they grow up as they will be if they enjoy complete education and full health.
Children in Nigeria can expect to complete 8.2 years of pre- primary, primary and secondary school by age 18.
However, when years of schooling are adjusted for quality of learning, this is only equivalent to 4.2 years, showing a learning gap of 4 years.
The World Bank report on adult survival rate across Nigeria showed that only 65 per cent of 15-year-olds would survive until 60 years of age.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 2018 Annual Meetings of the IMF and WBG brings together experts to discuss issues of global concern, including the World Economic Outlook, poverty eradication, economic development and aid effectiveness.

2019: Reno Omokri reveals what Obasanjo’s meeting with Atiku, Bishop Kukah, Sheikh Gumi means

Reno Omokri, the former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has reacted to the meeting of former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, with his former boss, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday.
Joining Atiku at the meeting were his righthand man and former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and Uche Secondus, the National Chairman of the party, Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah; Islamic preacher, Dr. Ahmad Abubkaar Gumi; and Founder of Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo.
Omokri, writing on Twitter, said it signified the end of division, as Atiku will unite all.
“Christian Archbishop Kukah shaking Muslim Sheikh Gumi with HE Obasanjo and Atiku sandwiched between.
“The era of division is over. The era of unity is here. @atiku will unite all.
“Christians and Muslims, North and South. No more 97% versus 5%. The era of 100% has begun,” he wrote.

Atiku’s big win

By Donu Kogbara

EX-VP Alhaji Atiku Abubakar enjoyed a resounding victory last weekend; and his emergence as the presidential candidate of the main opposition party, PDP, has totally panicked many previously complacent members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,  because they know that Atiku is the only Nigerian politician who has what it takes to beat President Buhari in 2019.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, PDP Presidential condidate, Atiku Abubakar
It took the PDP quite a while to recover from the sheer shock of being defeated in 2015, after having totally dominated the political scene since the termination of military rule in 1999.
And as the PDP went through all manner of toxic internal tensions in full view of the general public – and struggled to regain its composure, credibility, self-esteem, cohesion and equilibrium – Buhari’s acolytes smugly rested on their scanty laurels and gleefully declared that the PDP was “finished.”
Domination of the political scene
Well, as a floating voter who enthusiastically backed Buhari in 2015, then became disillusioned by his administration in 2016 and doesn’t feel obliged to support any party unconditionally, never mind ad infinitum, I am delighted to announce that the PDP has survived, made a sensible choice and reopened for business.
Don’t get me wrong: I don’t think that the PDP is fundamentally different from – or superior to – the APC.
Sure, the latter spews out lots of sanctimonious anti-corruption rhetoric; but it’s mostly about mere lip service and b—s—!!!
Sure, the former frequently loudly accuses the latter of abusing power, using Federal Might unethically and engaging in tyrannical  activities. But those of us who are not suffering from amnesia can clearly recall a time when the PDP exploited the fact that it was In Charge by pulling similar stunts.
The truth is that both parties are into hypocrisy, contain roughly the same types of people from all over the Federation, don’t concern themselves much with interesting ideological concepts and are essentially hardcore conservative.
And it’s precisely because the PDP and APC are basically the same kind of club that cross-carpeting is so commonplace.
Grinning cynically and unrepentantly
A pal who has moved from one to the other and back again tells me – grinning cynically and unrepentantly – that he was entirely motivated by self-interest and feels completely at home in both parties for as long as he is being “well taken care of”!
Anyway, though I’m pleased that the PDP has finally gotten its groove back, I am not madly in love with either party because I have friends and foes on both sides of the fence and know that most PDP/APC folks are no better or worse than each other.
Long story short: I’m celebrating PDP’s revival because democracy thrives when opposition is robust. And the APC needs to be challenged; and Atiku is, I think, equal to this task.
I don’t know Atiku well, but I’ve met him a few times and really like the cut of his jib.
My panicking APC friends keep assuring me that Atiku is “corrupt” or “deeply corrupt” or “profoundly corrupt”.
They swear that he got rich through grand larceny and bought the delegate votes that enabled him to beat his presidential aspirant rivals.
But, as PDP publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, points out:
“This is just a new attempt at smear campaign with spurious allegations…a defeatist approach that shows that the APC and the Buhari Presidency are afraid of the Atiku candidacy and have reached their wits end, well ahead of the elections.
“The claims, by APC, of vote-buying at our national convention, is therefore, not only false but completely unfounded and symptomatic of a party that has totally lost bearing and now engaged in rumour mongering…”
Anyway, they can continue with their insults. But I really don’t care what they think of him!
What matters is that Atiku is charming, clever, detribalized, efficient, entrepreneurial, not intimidated by above-average individuals and very respectful.
Earlier on this year, I asked Atiku why he didn’t punch back more aggressively whenever one of his most dogged detractors took pot shots at him. And he sighed and said: “I would rather not because he is older than me and used to be my Boss.”
Such touching humility and excellent manners!
And – most important of all perhaps – is the fact that Atiku (unlike Blinkered Buhari) believes in restructuring, the only thing that will save our ailing nation from going down the drain.
He has said that there is no alternative to restructuring. He has quite rightly highlighted the fact that “too much power” resides in the hands of the Federal Government, a situation he says makes governance less competitive, particularly in the states.
We desperately need progressive thinking like this in the 21st century.

“I am happy that this summit is taking place at a time the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, FMST, is working hard to help move our economy away from being resource-based to an economy that is knowledge-based and innovation-driven.
“I am hopeful that at the end of your deliberations, you will be able to provide solutions towards improving sustainable energy supply and access in the country.
‘’I am happy that the International Energy Charter, IECh, a reputable inter-governmental energy organisation that has the main objective of promoting multi-lateral framework for cross-border cooperation in the field of energy development is here with us.”
In his address, Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of Energy Commission of Nigeria, ECN, Prof. Eli Jidere Bala, said in line with its mandate, ECN instituted the summit to serve as a forum where national issues on energy in all its ramifications were discussed, with a view to facilitating the monitoring and assessment of performance of the energy sector in the execution of government policies on energy.
In his special remarks, European Union head of Cooperation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Kurt Cornelis, said the EU had so far committed 150 euros to support Nigeria through several projects cutting across the electricity value chain of the Nigeria electricity sector as well as the off-grid sector.
He said:  “Just to mention a few, the EU from this envelope, is co-financing phase 2 of NESP with 20 million euros as well as a support to TCN with 25 miliion euros grant to construct the Kura-Jogana-Gwiwa-Daura-Katsina double circuit 330KVA transmission line and substations which will also help evacuate the 1000MW Jigawa solar city project.”
He also stated that the focus of the EU was to increase support to Nigeria’s Climate Change initiatives by working hand in hand with the Federal Ministry of Environment on a new change action to start next year and continue to sensitise and raise awareness at the highest levels about the need take concrete measures to fight climate change.
He commended the Federal Government for having the political will to promote the use of renewable energy technology in the overall energy mix of the country and promised the continued support of the EU and ECOWAS to the country in ensuring that those without energy access got connected in the shortest possible time.

APC vs PDP: I have forgiven you, will help you mind fences internationally – Obasanjo tells Atiku

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday declared that he has forgiven the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Obasanjo said because he was a Christian who daily ask God for forgiveness, he has forgiven Abubakar over past inadequacies that occurred between them.
Recall that Obasanjo had met with Atiku, the founder and General Overseer of the Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo and others earlier today.
Also at the meeting was Bishop Mattew Kukah and Sheikh Ahmed Gumi.
Speaking during the parley, Obasanjo urged the Waziri of Adamawa to “mend fences” in the international world.
Obasanjo also promised to assist Abubakar in ensuring that he mend fences with both the national and the International world.
He said, “Yes, when it started, it was meant for Atiku to succeed Obasanjo. In the presence of these distinguished leaders of goodwill today, let me say it openly that we have reviewed what went wrong on the side of Atiku. And in all honesty, my former Vice-President has re-discovered and re-positioned himself. As I have repeatedly said, it is not so much what you did against me that was the issue but what you did against the Party, the Government and the country.
“I took the stand I had taken based on the character and attributes you exhibited in the position you found yourself. I strongly believe that I was right. It was in the overall interest of everyone and everything to take such a position.
“From what transpired in the last couple of hours or so, you have shown remorse; you have asked for forgiveness and you have indicated that you have learnt some good lessons and you will mend fences and make amends as necessary and as desirable.
“Whenever or wherever you might have offended me, as a Christian who asks for God’s forgiveness of my sins and inadequacies on daily basis, I forgive and I sincerely advise you to learn from the past and do what is right and it will be well with you. Obviously, you have mended fences with the Party and fully reconciled with the Party. That’s why today, you are the Presidential Candidate of the Party. In addition to appreciating all that the Party has done for you, may I advise you to work together with all those who contested for the Party’s flag with you as a team for your campaign.
“There are still areas, nationally and internationally, where you have to mend fences and make amends. You will know how to handle what is already out and what may yet be put out by the opposition. But, I am convinced that if you continue with the attitude that brought you here with these distinguished leaders of goodwill, with remorse and contrite heart, the rest of the coast within and outside the country can be cleared. And if there is anything I can do and you want me to do in that respect, I will do.
“I am sure with the right attitude for change where necessary, and by putting lessons learned by you to work, you will get the understanding, cooperation, support and mandate – all at the national level. With Nigerians voting for you, it will mean that you secure their forgiveness and regain their confidence. It will be with the hope or assurance of a Paul on the road to Damascus Conversion. After all, change and conversion are of man. I believe that with a contrite heart, change is possible in everybody’s life and situation.
“For me, relatively and of all the aspirants in the PDP, you have the widest and greatest exposure, experience, outreach and possibly the best machinery and preparation for seeing the tough and likely dirty campaign ahead through. From what I personally know of you, you have capacity to perform better than the incumbent. You surely understand the economy better; you have business experience, which can make your administration business-friendly and boost the economy and provide jobs.
“You have better outreach nationally and internationally and that can translate to better management of foreign affairs. You are more accessible and less inflexible and more open to all parts of the country in many ways. As Pastor Bakare, one-time running mate of the incumbent President said, “You are a wazobia man.” And that should help you in confronting the confrontable and shunning nepotism.”

‘In the beginning, Atiku was to succeed Obasanjo’

Atiku (left), founder, Living Faith Church (LFC), Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, Obasanjo and National Chairman, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus after a meeting at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta… yesterday.

I am happy to welcome the distinguished leaders of goodwill who have led the PDP Presidential Candidate and my former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, to my humble abode and I welcome the Presidential candidate himself.
Let me start by congratulating President-to-be, Atiku Abubakar, for his success at the recent PDP Primary and I took note of his gracious remarks in his acceptance speech that it all started here.Yes, when it started, it was meant for Atiku to succeed Obasanjo.

Please uphold truth, integrity, principles, morality and fight corruption, crimes and insurgency.  The fundamental law of the land, our constitution must be scrupulously defended. I make one demand and one demand on you today, I need you to say before God and man that you will always remain irrevocably committed to upholding ALL the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the whole country will remain your single indivisible constituency.
Constitutionalism, popular participation and inclusiveness are pre-conditions for reversing the deficits of the past three and half years. They will ensure abiding faith in our indivisibility, oneness and faith in the survival of all against none.
The fundamentals for our development, economic growth and progress are hard and soft infrastructure.  Remember to always give adequate places in your administration to our youth and women. All the authorities involved with the preparation, all processes and conduct of the election must ensure that the election is free, fair and credible.
Once again, congratulations and I wish you well.  My distinguished brothers and leaders of goodwill, thank you for making this happen.  I will now count on you to encourage all hands to be on the deck to take Nigeria to the level God has created it to be – autopilot level.God bless you all and God bless Nigeria.

PDP Begs Fayose Not To Leave Part

Governor Ayodele Fayose
Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Monday, threatened to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over what he described as attempt by some people to take over the structure of the party and sidelining those who have been toiling to keep the party together.
Speaking with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, Fayose alleged that the plot to sideline him and other leaders of the party was as a result of their support for Governor Aminu Tambuwa’s ambition.
However, the party has urged Fayose to rescind his decision. The PDP appealed to him not to take any decision in anger.
Deputy National Publicty Secretary of the party, Prince Diran Odeyemi said: “We appeal to him not to leave the party, he has been an asset and he has benefited from the party. Even when he left, he still came back to the party, so he should consider all that and not abandon the party when we need him most.
"He should consider the fact that all those who left the PDP for other parties regretted that they left. He should not leave now that the likes of Atiku, Bukola Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal are back in the party. God will guide him aright, he should not take any decision in anger.”

Impeachment threat: What APC, PDP senators agreed to do

The Senate Tuesday rose from a meeting and resolved to put to rest the contentious political and parliamentary issues that had distracted it ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The meeting which held behind closed doors for 20 minutes was said to have attracted expressions of serious worries by lawmakers concerning recent political disturbances in the upper chamber.
Though no official statement was issued at the end of the closed-door session but a lawmaker who pleaded anonymity told DAILY POST that the earlier threats and counter threats by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers were dropped.
According to the lawmaker, “the Senate today(Tuesday) reconvened after about two months recess and immediately went into closed session where all members had frank discussions about the future of the Eighth Senate as it goes into its last stage.
He continued, “The members agreed to give peace a chance and avoid allowing the red chamber of the federal legislature to get degenerated into an arena of conflict over partisan and personal issues”
It was equally learnt that the APC caucus also extracted a promise from the Senate President that national interest will continue to take precedence over any other consideration in the activities of the Senate.
Further, the senators were said to have agreed not to allow external forces and influence to cause disaffection, disturbance or crisis within the legislature.
But the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had severally urged his party men in the Senate to remove Saraki as Senate President because of his defection to the PDP.
Against this backdrop, political pundits still believe that the threats for Saraki’s removal from office may not be totally ruled out as uncertainty and surprise remain the constant feature of politics.

APC, PDP Senators, Reps Draw Battle Line

File Photo
The National Assembly resumes plenary today amidst tension over alleged plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to take over its leadership.
Sources told Daily Independent that APC lawmakers are spoiling for a fight with the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) lawmakers over control of the National Assembly.
However, the battle for the control of the National Assembly, a lawmaker, who does not want his name mentioned, told our correspondent may be postponed to Wednesday following the death of Funke Adedoyin representing Irepodun/Isin Ekiti/Oke Ero Constituency of Kwara State.
The lawmaker further disclosed that the National Assembly will follow its tradition, pay respect for the late member and adjourn sitting to the following day.
It would be recalled that before the National Assembly went on break about eleven weeks ago, there were skirmishes by the APC to impeach the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki.
The defection of Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker, House of Representatives, would this week add tension to the already charged atmosphere.
APC lawmakers are spoiling for a fight over the leadership of the National Assembly now headed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers who were until recently of the APC.
The APC lawmakers’ argument is that the opposition party cannot control the National Assembly.
While the two presiding officers in the Senate, Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, belong to the PDP with just 48 senators out of 109, the number one presiding officer in the House, Dogara, also belongs to the PDP in a House with about 196 APC members out of the available 360 seats.
Saraki and Dogara defected from the APC to the PDP during the recess, at different times, on account of irreconcilable differences they had with the APC leadership at different levels.
The National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, has not hidden his anger over Saraki’s control of the National Assembly, vowing that he would be removed.
The plans of the ruling party to take action against Saraki’s leadership of the Senate was revealed on Saturday by leader of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, who declared that minority will not be allowed to rule over the majority at both chambers of the National Assembly on resumption.
He had said, “I want Nigerians to know that the number of senators of APC in the Senate remains the largest. I want to call the attention of everyone here to the fact that democracy, as defined by people, remains government of the majority, where minority will always have their say.
“Those who cannot remember that there was a time in this country when nine was greater than 16, I want to remind them that we have come to that point again.
“Now, we have our chamber dominated and occupied by minority leaders. They remain minority leaders occupying our positions.
Those who refuse to follow the part of honour and integrity by exiting, we will send them out with ignominy.
“I want to assure everyone here that 2019 is going to be a walkover for Mr. President, by the grace of God. It will see APC winning more than 24 states.
“We will have a National Assembly where vast majority of senators will be from the APC and in the House of Representatives.
“We want to have a National Assembly that will, at all times, work with Mr. President, day and night, to deliver to Nigerians what we have lost over the years.
“The leadership of the National Assembly has shown to us that they are not prepared to be loyal to this administration.
“On Tuesday (today), we will be going back to the National Assembly when our recess is over. We intend to force through a lot of things and pass that budget for INEC and the security agencies for the 2019 election.
“If we cannot convince them, we intend to force through the foreign plan for this administration. Some people have taken our mandate and run away with it. We intend to fight, defend, and promote the interest of this party at all cost.”
Meanwhile, Senator Biodun Olujimi has advised APC senators to drop their plans to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki as the National Assembly resumes today.
He was speaking in response to the threat by Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, that the ruling APC would effect a change in the leadership of the National Assembly on resumption.
Speaking to newsmen on Monday, Olujimi said: “The Senate leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, should not cause tension and problem in the Senate.
“He should not promise the All Progressives Congress what he cannot deliver. Nigerians should hold him responsible if the Senate is unable to sit because the leadership of the Senate is not by party affiliation; it is through an election among all the senators.
“Lawan should be reminded that the election of the present presiding officers of the Senate was done even when he was not present.
“He should be reminded that responsible senators who attended the inauguration of the Senate as announced by President Muhammadu Buhari elected the presiding officers and that Ahmad Lawan, as the Senate leader, should be conversant with the procedure for the removal of presiding officers, and for the avoidance of doubt, the Senate is solidly behind the presiding officers and we will resist any attempt that will offset the calm situation in the Senate.
“The Senate leader should please note that we are returning to handle all outstanding issues and he should be held responsible if we are not able to accomplish them. We ask him, as one of the principal officers of the Senate, to refrain from beating the drums of war that will do no one any good.
“We have resolved as senators of the Federal Republic to face our duties squarely and pray that no one distracts us.
The unity of the Senate is more important than anybody’s inordinate ambition.”

Mourinho’s 825 days hotel bill hits £500,000

If Jose Mourinho is eventually sacked by Manchester United, at least, he will not have the added stress of selling a house.
Mourinho has been living in Manchester for 825 days since setting up base at the Lowry Hotel on July 6, 2016, but is yet to lay down permanent roots in the city.
His family base remains in the capital as his daughter — Matilde — graduated from London’s University of Arts in the summer and his son — Jose Mourinho Jnr — played for Fulham until April 2017.
The Portuguese tactician has a contract at Old Trafford until 2020, but has still decided to remain in a hotel rather than purchase a Cheshire mansion.
Mourinho is often pictured on the steps of the Lowry Hotel, where he is welcomed by a doorman every time he arrives at the five-star accommodation.
The Manchester United boss, who was said to have come close to losing his job at the weekend before his side came from two goals down to win 3-2, lives in one of the hotel’s luxury Riverside Suites.
A Riverside Suite is priced at £600 on their website which means Mourinho has shelled out around £500,000 since moving to Manchester if he has been paying the average online price.
The suites are ‘large enough for a selection of soft sofas with restful river views’ and ‘a separate lounge and dining area with a small kitchenette for the thrill of entertaining in a five star hotel’.
There is one Riverside Suite on each floor of the hotel, which are described as having ‘the feeling of a stylish private apartment’.
Each has a view overlooking the River Irwell, which runs through Manchester, and are all individually designed around abstract artwork by internationally acclaimed Oldham-born artist, Alan Rankle.
Each room features a piece of Rankle’s art on a 4mx2.5m upholstered headboard, curved around the bed, with mirrors strategically placed to allow guests to view the artist’s work from multiple angles.
The air-conditioned suites all come with sofas and chairs, each have two entrances, a desk and a separate lounge and dining area with enough space to entertain four guests for dinner or hold meetings.
There is a walk-in wardrobe, en-suite bathroom with separate shower, an in-room bar and a safe. Tea and coffee making facilities are included, along with a fridge and coffee machine.

NLC pickets Chinese firms over alleged maltreatment of workers

EFCC urges court to re-assign Magu’s confirmation suit

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday picketed three Chinese mining firms in Ogun State over alleged inhuman treatment of workers.
The NLC, in conjunction with the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) accused the companies of maltreating their Nigerian employees, contrary to the country’s labour law.
The affected companies are A and B, Multi Verse and Abstar, located in Obafemi Owode Local Council Area of the state.
They were led by the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Akeem Ambali, who also accused the companies of underpaying their workers below the existing N18, 000 minimum wage.
Other allegations were that, most of the employees are casual workers who operate under “poor and unfriendly environment.”
Also included is the firm’s refusal for the employees to join a union to articulate their welfare.
The action began at 11:00 a.m., with the protesters carrying placards with various inscriptions as: “Enough of despotic business ideology by the Chinese,” “Who owns the land?” We Africans.”
Ambali told The Guardian that the protest was aimed at curbing anti-workers’ interest against Nigerian employees.
He said: “We are here to defend the interest of the workers and we are closing down the companies over anti-workers actions against them by their Chinese employers.
“The workers are not being paid the minimum wage, and even the Chinese firms have refused to allowed them to unionise, because they know that they would definitely fight for their rights.”

2019: Atiku’s camp speaks on reaching agreement with power brokers to clinch PDP ticket

Spokesman of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation, Segun Sowunmi, has claimed that his principal and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, did not clinch the party’s ticket by entering into alliance with power brokers.
He said this while reacting to claims in some quarters that Atiku had to make a lot of commitments to those who supported him to clinch the ticket.
Sowunmi told Daily Trust: “What alliance with power brokers? Which power brokers? There were 12 aspirants there and all of them went to the ballot.
“Everyman went to the ballot believing they had the chance of winning. It was only when the votes were counted that every man saw the number of votes he got. That is the beauty of a transparent democratic process.”
“When you are going into an election, you put in your best, but there is always a 13th hour when you must wait for the verdict of history,” he said.

Zinedine Zidane Gives Condition For Manchester United Switch

Zinedine Zidane
Manchester United face having to agree to a Zinedine Zidane transfer demand if they are to appoint him as Jose Mourinho’s successor.
The Frenchman remains the overwhelming favourite to replace Mourinho, despite recent comments made by his agent.
However, the Independent claim that Zidane moving to United hinges on whether Ed Woodward will meet his request.
The Frenchman wants a big say in transfers – having had little-to-no say on such deals at Real Madrid – if he is to make a premature return to management.

Tinubu Wades Into Herdsmen vs Farmers Clashes, Reveals How To End The Crisis

Chief Bola Tinubu, an All Progressives Congress chieftain, has asked the government to immediately convert unused land to grazing routes as this will curb incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen.
Punch Metro reports that Tinubu said this in Abuja on Monday at a national summit on conflict resolution.
The event, which was organised by The Nation and TV Continental, was themed: ‘Towards an Enduring Peace.’
He said, “The government must help herders gradually shift from their traditional nomadic existence to a more static lifestyle.  We have to face the reality that modernity is making the nomadic way counterproductive and inefficient.
“Unoccupied, isolated land can quickly be turned into grazing areas in the affected states. In the long run, this will enable herders to better maintain their livestock and thus their own livelihood.”
Tinubu, who was represented by an Executive Commissioner of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Sunday Dare, said contrary to speculations, the crisis was not caused by religious or political differences but by water scarcity.
The former governor of Lagos State said the desertification in most parts of the North had caused herders to move southward with their cattle in search of greener pastures.
He added, “An acutely thirsty man remembers neither Bible nor Quran very well until his thirst is quenched. Dire need often pushes a man to behave as if bereft of compassion for a person in equally dire circumstance.
“No doubt the problem has exacerbated during the past decade. We must assume climate change plays a role.”
As a long-term solution to the crisis, Tinubu recommended that water catchment and conservation systems such as the prudent use of dams and irrigation sub-systems maintainable at the local level must be developed.
Also speaking, a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, noted that the crisis had nothing to do with the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari was a Fulani man.
Ribadu, who is also a chieftain of the APC, said, on the contrary, most nomadic Fulani herders felt marginalised under the Buhari government.
He said, “People have continued to misunderstand what is going on. President Buhari has nothing to do with what is going on. In fact, the Fulani are even angry with him because they think he has abandoned them.
“They think he is listening to the others and that he meets people from Benue, Plateau and never gave them an audience.
“They are saying that he gave billions of naira to others as victims but has not given them anything. But the Buhari I know is just an honest man. He is not taking sides in this struggle, but he cannot change himself because he is a Fulani man or claim that he is no more a Fulani man because it has become an issue.”
Ribadu said many of the herders were migrating southwards not only because of desertification but also because of the high rate of insecurity in the North.
He said sadly, the nomadic Fulani are never given a sense of belonging wherever they go because they are not landowners.
The former EFCC boss added, “You can hardly see any nomadic Fulani man that is part of a state assembly or the National Assembly and they form about 15 to 20 million of the population and they are marginalised. They are not in any way benefiting from what is happening in the country today.
“There has been only one attempt to address the problem and that was the nomadic education programme. Many of those who participated in the nomadic education programme are PhD holders today and those that are working are helping their communities. Other than that, I have not seen any effort geared towards solving their problem.”
In his remarks, the National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Abdullahi Bodejo, said some of the solutions to the current crisis included the immediate suspension of the anti-grazing law as well as the release of herders arrested in Benue in the course of enforcing the law.
Bodejo also urged the military to stop aerial bombardment of pastoralist communities but should rather employ an intelligence-based approach to the crisis.
He added, “The recent anti-grazing laws enacted by some states should be suspended as the laws have become a recipe for conflicts.
“The immediate release from detention of hundreds of pastoralists languishing in jails without trial particularly those arrested in Benue on the pretext of violating anti-grazing laws.”

Ambode: Lagos Assembly speaks on fighting governor over election money

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reacted to allegation that the move to impeach Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was for selfish reasons....
