Iwobi targets more goals against West Ham

Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi will be aiming to write his name on the scoresheet as Arsenal seek their first win against West Ham in Saturday’s Premier League tie at Emirates Stadium.

Alex Iwobi
Iwobi netted the Gunners equalising goal at Stamford Bridge to make the scoreline 2-2 only to bow to Marcos Alonso’s late minute strike to end the game 3-2 in favour of Chelsea last weekend.
However, with just one starting game and a substitute on his belt, the Nigerian international who will be hoping to lift Arsenal with his goals, knows the Gunners must fire from all cylinder to avoid an upset against the Hammers.
The Gunners, unbeaten in their last nine home London derbies, have won 28 of their 44 top-flight encounters with the Hammers.
Arsenal and West Ham are in desperate need of lift-off after making losing starts to life under Emery and Pellegrini respectively.

Why Nigerians appreciate my govt – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said Nigerians are appreciative of the implementation of policies and projects of his government because they were aimed at improving the standard of living in the country.
Receiving the leadership of Kano Traders’ Association, led by Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Sani, Chairman of Kanti Kwari Traders Association, Friday in Daura, Buhari pledged that his administration will not relent in doing the needful to create jobs, expand trade and encourage greater productivity.
The President told members of the business community that under the Government Enterprises and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) and the CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP), more traders and farmers have expanded their trade and increased food production.
According to the President, some of the policies and projects were misconstrued by some critics at the beginning of this administration but with steady and rigorous implementation they have realized that these interventions are very beneficial for the development of the country.
The President promised to look into the concerns of the traders on the GEEP programme as well as the influx and dominance of foreigners in the retail sector.
Earlier in his remarks, Sani had commended the President for reviving the $2.8 billon Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, which was abandoned by the previous administration due to corruption and mismanagement.
The market leader also applauded the Buhari administration for the ongoing works at river ports in Baro, Niger State, Lokoja, Kogi State and Oguta in Imo State which were abandoned for about a decade but will now be completed before May 2019.
‘‘It is also another gesture of Mr. President in fulfilling his promise to end fuel problem in Nigeria by signing the Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a new 150,000 barrels per day refinery in Katsina State,’’ Sani said.

Lewandowski nets controversial penalty as Bayern make winning start

Robert Lewandowski netted a controversial penalty awarded by VAR at the second attempt as Bayern Munich opened the new Bundesliga season with a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim on Friday.
Thomas Mueller put Bayern ahead with a first-half header and Adam Szalai equalised before Lewandowski’s spot-kick and a late Arjen Robben goal sealed victory at the Allianz Arena.
Both teams seem to have suffered serious injury setbacks as Bayern winger Kingsley Coman and Hoffenheim captain Kevin Vogt both hobbled off.
New Bayern coach Niko Kovac got his side’s bid for a seventh straight title off to a winning start in his first league game at the club.
But Hoffenheim had every reason to complain about Bayern’s second goal on 82 minutes.
Replays showed Hoffenheim defender Havard Nordtveit made no contact with Franck Ribery, yet Bayern were awarded the penalty and when Lewandowski had his initial shot saved, Robben netted the rebound.
However, the penalty had to be retaken as replays showed Robben ran into the area too soon and Lewandowski scored at the second attempt.
Mueller then had a goal ruled out for striking his elbow before Robben made sure of the three points with Bayern’s third goal on 90 minutes.
Kovac sprung a surprise before kick-off by starting with Germany centre-back Mats Hummels, 29, and Robben, 34, on the bench.
Defender Niklas Suele and Coman, both 22, took over in the starting line-up.
Mueller responded to sharp criticism of his poor performances at the World Cup, when Germany crashed out after finishing bottom of their group, with a superb header from a corner in the 23rd minute to claim the first goal of the season.
Hoffenheim wasted a golden chance moments later when Joelinton fired wide with only goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to beat.
The hosts should have gone 2-0 up when Coman fired straight at Hoffenheim ‘keeper Oliver Baumann on 37 minutes, before having to be helped off after taking a heavy knock on the ankle in a foul by Hoffenheim defender Nico Schulz.
The referee initially missed the incident, but after VAR intervened, Schulz was booked and Robben replaced Coman.
It stayed 1-0 at the break, but Hoffenheim drew level following two errors in the Bayern ranks after Javi Martinez gave away possession weakly.
Hoffenheim striker Szalai powered into the box, held off Martinez’s challenge and turned Boateng to fire home on 57 minutes.
Martinez made way for Leon Goretzka with 25 minutes left as Kovac put more emphasis on attack, and Hoffenheim lost Vogt when he landed awkwardly after a challenge.
And after the VAR drama, Robben made sure of the points by darting onto a through ball and firing home for the defending champions.

Name 3 Projects You Initiated, Started, Completed - Reno Omokri Challenges Buhari

Reno Omokri
The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has been challenged to name three projects they initiated, started and completed since it took over from the previous administration.
The challenge was thrown to the federal government by Reno Omokri, an aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Incumbent Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo had on Tuesday said President Buhari’s government has done more in terms of infrastructure development than the previous administration, despite earning little from the oil, which is the main stay of the economy.
“In the past four years of the previous administration, over US$393 billion was earned in oil proceeds alone. In the past three years, we have earned US$94 billion, look at the difference. And the reasons are very straightforward. The price of oil was about half of what it used to be. But with the same $94 billion, we have been able to do far more,” Osinbajo was quoted by Vanguard as saying in a town hall meeting in Bariga/Somolu Local Council Develpment Area, LCDA, in Lagos State.
Reacting, Omokri described the claims as lies saying the administration of his principal initiated, started and completed more projects that the incumbent government, he therefore challenged them to list their own projects which they started and completed.
"The recent comments by Vice President Osinbajo that the Buhari administration of which he is a part of has achieved much more than the Jonathan government is another in a long line of lies that the Vice President has come to be known for," Omokri said in a statement on Friday.
"It beats my imagination why a man like Osinbajo who claims to be a pastor would have a habit of lying and lying so brazenly. It is a notorious fact that the Jonathan administration outperforms the Buhari administration in every sphere of governance.
"I understand the 2019 elections are5 months away and a desperate Buhari government, like a student who hasn’t read for his forthcoming examinations, is in panic mode, but they should please leave the good name of Jonathan out of their sordid mess.
"The only way Osinbajo can be correct is if he is referring to the fact that Nigeria, under their administration, has overtaken India as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people in the world according to the World Poverty Clock.
"While ex President Jonathan can point to exactly 8956 projects that he initiated, started and completed, I challenge the Buhari government to take the challenge and name 3 projects they have initiated, started and completed in the last three years.
"The super fast 187-kilometre Abuja-Kaduna railway, which President Buhari commissioned, was built by President Jonathan. The Abuja metro, which the incumbent President also commissioned, was conceived by President Obasanjo and finished by President Jonathan.
"According to UNICEF, there are 10.5 million out of school children in Nigeria, with about 60% in the Northwest geopolitical zone, where President Buhari comes from. Has the Buhari administration built even one secondary school or university to cater for them?
"So by what logic can Osinbajo say that their administration has outperformed a Jonathan government that initiated, started and completed 165 almajiri schools as well as 12 new federal universities to cater for this mammoth out of school youth bulge?
"How can Osinbajo say their govt, under which Nigeria suffered her worst retrogression in Transparency International’s Corruption Index (from 136 to 148) outperformed GEJ admin under which we made our best ever improvement in the CPI (from 144 to 136).
"According to data published by National Bureau of Statistics last year, 7.9 million Nigerians lost their jobs in the 21 months preceding that time. How can an administration with such an abysmal job record claim to have outperformed a Jonathan.
"The Jonathan govt, according to the same National Bureau of Statistics, created 6 million jobs through programmes like the YouWIN initiative, Local Content Law, Graduate Internship Scheme, Nagropreneurs and SURE-P? Can Buhari and Osinbajo match that?
"If the current Buhari government is saying that by borrowing more money in three years than the Peoples Democratic Party borrowed in 16 years they have outperformed the Jonathan administration, then I am willing to concede that fact.
"But to say that an admin that has not built even one single power station has outperformed an administration that built and commissioned the 500 megawatts Omotosho Power Plant Phase 2 with four gas turbines in Ondo State is to be economical with the truth." he said.
Omokri said the constant refrain by the Buhari and Osinbajo administration of blaming their abysmal performance on the low price of oil is a case of a bad workman blaming his tools for his incompetence.
"Today, oil averages at $74 per barrel. In 2017, crude averaged $51 per barrel. Need I remind Nigerians that the PDP government of President Obasanjo paid off Nigeria’s entire foreign debt in 2006 at a time oil sold at less than one third what it sells today."

2019: APC accuses INEC of leaking sensitive information

By Omeiza Ajayi

THE All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of leaking to the public, a letter written by its National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Oshiomhole
It added that the commission had been divulging sensitive official exchanges to the media.
Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena in a statement yesterday in Abuja, said the party’s attention had been drawn to a leaked letter written to the commission by Oshiomhole informing the electoral umpire of the congresses and primaries.
He said: “These leaks of our sensitive and confidential correspondence to INEC is becoming commonplace and totally unacceptable. We strongly request that INEC looks into its internal handling of official correspondence and put a stop to these leaks.
“While the leaked formal notification to INEC has been done by the APC pursuant to the provisions of Section 85 of the 2010 Electoral Act (as amended), we advise the public particularly the media to wait for an official announcement from the party as the leaked dates are subject to changes, if necessary.”.
Saturday Vanguard learned that the party is set to convene a National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting next week to approve dates for the conduct of its congresses and primaries to elect candidates for the 2019 general election. It was gathered that the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party was considering next Wednesday for the all-important NEC meeting which would be the first since the Oshiomhole-led NWC came to power.
The date for the NEC is however subject to change.
Political parties are expected to conduct their congresses between August and October 2018.
APC had earlier proposed to conduct its congresses and primaries between September 8 and 29 with the presidential primaries slated for September 19.

Benue: How herdsmen are ‘planning to kidnap, kill me’ – Governor Ortom

Report reaching DAILY POST has it that plans are underway to assassinate the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom along the Lafia-Makurdi Road by unknown political opponents.
A DAILY POST source claimed that some political opponents working for top politicians have allegedly connived with top government officials to assassinate the governor along the ever-busy Makurdi-Lafia Road.
He said the plan was to frustrate the Governor from using any chartered flight to Abuja for political and other important meetings and consequently expose him to attack along the Makurdi-Lafia Road.
According to him, ‘’We have important security information that Governor Ortom is one of their targets for possible assassination. Some politicians working with top people in government are working together to ensure the Governor’s effort to secure the State is frustrated.
‘’Their plan is to attack him along Makurdi-Lafia Road. People have taken politics to a different height. We believe the world is watching and listening to our cry in Benue State,’’ the top government official told DAILY POST.
Confirming the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Terve Akase told DAILY POST that the Governor was aware of the plan to assassinate him. He said the plan was already being carried out as there is a fresh order said to be banning all flights to Makurdi.
He said, ‘’Usually, because of the Governor’s regular meetings and other important things, he uses flight to Abuja, but now, there is an order banning all flights to Makurdi. This is a clear setup. We are also aware of the plan to assassinate him along the Makurdi-Lafia Road. This is a sad development as we believe some people are just carrying out a written script on how to silence Governor Ortom.’’

Why The DSS Linked Me To Militants - Journalist, Jones Abiri Opens Up

Jones Abiri, a recently released journalist, has explained the circumstances that resulted in his arrest and detention for two years, without trial, by security operatives, Premium Times reports.
Mr Abiri was arrested in July 2016 by operatives of the State Security Service, following allegations that he was linked to the Niger-Delta militants.
Mr Abiri, publisher of the weekly Source Magazine based in Bayelsa, was held incommunicado in an SSS detention facility without arraignment in court, while top government officials claimed he was not a practicing journalist.
After repeated calls and media campaigns for his release, Mr Abiri was arraigned alongside Collins Opume, a student of Niger-Delta University from Bayelsa State.
The State Security Service charged Mr Abiri for alleged militancy on July 27, two years after arresting him.
He was released on bail by a Magistrate Court in Abuja on August 15.
In an interview with Premium Times, Mr Abiri narrated the circumstances that resulted in his arrest and how he was linked to a militant group in the Niger-Delta.
“I was arrested in my office in Yenegua. That was on the July 21 2016. About 23 minutes after three o-clock. Twelve men came into my office and showed me a warrant for searching my office, duly signed by a magistrate, Lucky. I gave them the privilege to search my office. After the search, they could not find any incriminating thing.
“What they found was a phone that they had been tracking. The phone was brought to my office by some men who had come to ask me to do a statement for them as a journalist. They said someone directed them to me. And I did not know that they were having an ulterior concept (motive) for asking me to anchor the statement, when there were other journalists.
“At a point, I wanted to resist. But two of them threatened me. They said I must write the press statement, if I was mindful of myself. So I became afraid for my life and decided to write the press statement for them. It was published by various media houses and later they called me and said that there was a particular story that was published that the government had reacted to the story and that they would like to react to the position of government.

“At that point, two of them came. They were looking quite haggard. They asked me to help them charge a small Nokia phone. The phone should cost about N2,000 or so in the market. It’s one of these old phones. Unknown to me that was the phone they were using to send text messages to oil companies demanding for money.
“I ignorantly agreed to help them charge the phone. I did not know that AGIP had sent a petition to the SSS, state command, which had resulted in the tracking of the number inside the phone. They gave me the phone and left, as if to return shortly. When they did not come back, I realised that there was no way I could contact them, because the phone I was using to contact them, was charging in my office. So I removed the phone and put it in my drawer.
“They (security operatives) found the phone in my drawer. That purportedly linked me to becoming the leader of Joint Niger-Delta Liberation Force which I do not know. I am not the founder nor a member of the militant group.”
Mr Abiri added that the ease with which he was found by the operatives was proof of his innocence since militants were mostly known to be elusive.
“If I had been attending any of their meetings, I would not have been operating an office for the production of newspapers, in Yenagoa. I would have been in the creeks. They wouldn’t have seen me. More so, I was running a programme, I was a law undergraduate. A level three law undergraduate. As a law undergraduate and mindful of the facts about the illegality of militancy, why would I condescend so low as to be involved in such a thing?” Mr Abiri said.

Drama As Power-Drunk DPO Storms A Mosque With His Team, Raid Worshipers, Others

According to a report by Punch Metro, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Pen Cinema Police Division, Lagos State, H.E. Nwabuisi, has been accused of conducting raids during which he allegedly arrested innocent residents and extorted money from them.
Nwabuisi, a Superintendent of Police, was alleged to have led his men to Alimi Ogunyemi Street, in the Ifako Ijaiye area, where some Muslim faithfuls, who had just finished praying in a mosque, were allegedly rounded up around 8pm on Wednesday.
The police team, which reportedly had a Black Maria and four police vans in its convoy, was alleged to have also raided clubs and picked up passersby in the area.
Around 12am, the team was said to have taken all the suspects to the Pen Cinema Police Station, where about 37 arrested residents were forced to pay money for bail.
One of the victims, Sheriff Aranjure, said the policemen called the victims out from the cell one by one, adding that they demanded N15,000 bribe from each person to release them.
Sheriff said his elder brother, Ibrahim, bargained with the DPO through a police sergeant, adding that Ibrahim paid N30,000 for three arrested Muslims.
He said, “Our mosque is in front of our house. We had just observed Ishai (8pm prayers) and were in front of the mosque when the policemen from the Pen Cinema Police Station appeared. They had a task force van, a Black Maria and four other vehicles.
“Before they got to the house, they had arrested some people. When they got to the front of the mosque, they stopped a motorcycle rider and arrested him and his passenger.
“The man that led the team was the DPO of the Pen Cinema Police Division. The name on his tag is H.E. Nwabuisi. He came to where we were and asked what we were doing outside. We told him that we were in front of our house and we had just finished praying in the mosque.

“He ordered some of the policemen to take us into the Black Maria. We asked what we did wrong. When I tried to resist, the DPO dragged me by the shirt and tore my clothes. They took three of us into the Black Maria.”
Sheriff said others taken with him were a 15-year-old boy, Ahmed Ogunyemi, who had been asked to buy drugs from a kiosk in front of the house, and one Isiaka Adams, who was said to be in his early 50s.
He noted that the policemen visited a club on Emmanuel Olorunfemi Street and arrested some of the patrons.
One Seyi was also reportedly picked in front of his house on Coker Street.
“After they raided other places, we were taken to the Area G Command and put in a cell. They went out to conduct more raids. Around 15 minutes to 12am, they came back with new people. They put all of us in the Black Maria and took us to the Pen Cinema Police Station. We were about 37 people that they arrested. When we got to the station, they asked us to write our names. They started calling us out one by one, asking if we wanted to bail ourselves,” he added.
Sheriff’s brother, Ibrahim, who allegedly paid N30,000 for the bail, said he was lucky to have escaped arrest.
Ibrahim said despite his illness, he joined a tricycle to trail the policemen after his brother was arrested.
“Aside from Sheriff, I was the one who sent the 15-year-old boy they arrested on an errand to buy drugs for me because I was ill. So, when I saw what had happened, I followed them in a tricycle. We trailed them as they went to Area G. But from my observation, it appeared the area commander did not know anything about the raid.
“When they got to their station, I saw one of them, called Bigi, a police sergeant. He asked me what the problem was and I told him what had happened. He went to meet the DPO and negotiated on our behalf. They collected N30,000 for the three of them. Bigi said it was important that we secured their bail that night because they would take them to court the following day. For fear that our people could be arraigned for what they knew nothing about, we had to look for the money that night.
“In my presence, he gave the DPO the money and they spoke briefly. The owner of the bar where some other people were arrested also paid some money to the policemen,” he added.
The Ogun State indigene said he was ready to testify against the senior police officer, urging the authorities to call him to order.
“The corruption at the station is at the highest level. The DPO always leads the raid and extortion. This is the fourth time I will see him do that. I can say it to his face. I do not fear him and I am ready to testify against him,” he added.
Another victim, Adams, described the conduct of the DPO as unprofessional, saying the harrassment of the residents was unwarranted.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed that there was a raid in the area, but denied that the DPO extorted money from those arrested.
He said, “It is a blatant lie. There was indeed a raid on black spots in the area. This was after a tip-off that the Awawa Boys and some other cults planned to engage in a gang war. The DPO swung into action and a lot of the cult members were arrested. This is in keeping with our commitment to always keep Lagos residents safe and the state crime-free.
“However, the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, has ordered an investigation into the allegation.”

Chelsea vs Newcastle : I am not able to play with five defenders – Sarri

Chelsea vs Newcastle : Maurizio Sarri’s fear of a slow start at Chelsea may have been unfounded but the head coach insists his side are still very much a work in progress.

Chelsea players celebrate their team’s first goal against Perth Glory during their friendly football match at Optus stadium in Perth on July 23, 2018. / AFP PHOTO
Chelsea will travel to Newcastle on Sunday aiming to make it three wins from as many Premier League games this season.
Having voiced concerns about how quickly his new players would adapt to his methods, Sarri’s problems right now appear to revolve around who to leave out of his line-up.
Nevertheless, he saw enough in the Community Shield defeat by Manchester City and last weekend’s narrow home victory against Arsenal to confirm him in the view that, defensively, there is still work to be done.
Against the Gunners, it took a late winner from left-back Marcos Alonso to secure a 3-2 victory after Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi had cancelled out Chelsea’s early two-goal lead.
And while Newcastle might not have the firepower to threaten the Blues in the way City and Arsenal did, Sarri knows his hopes of steering the club back into the top four will not be helped by a leaky back-line.
The 59-year-old said Chelsea’s defence was not still up to speed when he explained the ongoing absence of Gary Cahill, insisting it was harder for defenders to adjust to his methods than more attack-minded players.
Like Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard, Cahill returned to pre-season training later than some of his colleagues having been a member of the England squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.
And with Sarri determined to impose a back-four after two seasons of Antonio Conte’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, there are fewer openings for a centre-back.
“I think that, in this moment, for a defender it’s more difficult to play in my team after only 20 days of training,” said Sarri.
“I am not worried about the defensive phase because, when I arrive at a new team, usually I have problems with the defensive phase for two or three months. So I think it’s normal for me.”
– ‘Lose metres on the pitch’ –
Sarri insisted a back-four was crucial to his plans to introduce the approach dubbed ‘Sarri-ball’ at former club Napoli to England.
“I am not able to play with five defenders, because we are trying to defend by looking only at the ball,” he said.
“In this way, if I defend with five defenders, I lose immediately metres on the pitch. I am not able. I tried five years ago, but it’s not my way.”
The speed with which the players adapt to the changing requirements at the back could determine how successful Sarri is in his first season in England.
He can be satisfied, though, that with Hazard due to return to full fitness soon, his side’s attacking strengths should provide the breathing space needed to adjust.
Meanwhile Newcastle will be without defender Isaac Hayden as he starts a three-match ban after being sent off in a goalless draw away to Cardiff last Saturday.
Kenedy, who missed a penalty in that match, will also be absent as the 22-year-old Brazilian loan signing from Chelsea is ineligible to play against his parent club.
Many Newcastle fans remain frustrated by owner Mike Ashley’s refusal to let Rafael Benitez spend heavily in the transfer window.
But Magpies manager Benitez urged supporters to back the team rather than protest against Ashley once they were inside St James’ Park.
“What I would say is just be sure that when you go to the stadium, you support the team because it’s the only way for us to be stronger,” Benitez said.

2019: Makarfi speaks on what Saraki, Tambuwal, Kwankwaso would do for PDP

A former National Caretaker Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi, on Friday, said the defection of high profile politicians into the party would not have negative impact on the fortune of the party in the next general election.
He said the defection of political leaders, including the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso would add value to the chance of the party in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
He stressed that the party has the capacity to handle the likely challenges that may confront it as a result of the defection of new members into its fold.
Markafi, who is a presidential aspirant of the party spoke in Akure, the Ondo State capital, while on sensitisation visit to the leaders of the party in the state.
He solicited the support of the state chapter of the party for the realization of his presidential ambition.
He admitted that the defection of new members into the PDP has its challenges, but said: “the leadership of our party has all it takes to handle any challenge that may come as a result of the development.”
“There is nothing good without its challenges. Our party needs new members and we appreciate the defection of some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) into our party, but this may come with its own challenges as many of them may also signify intention to contest for political offices.
“However, the leadership of the party has the wisdom to handle such situation, and we won’t allow it to divide us.”
Speaking on the threat by the APC senators to impeach the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, he said “I am not surprised with their actions; it shows their ignorance about the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because the constitution is clear about that. If they are familiar with the constitution they will know that they lack the legal powers to impeach the Senate president.
“I am sure they cannot have the two-thirds majority which the constitution requires for the impeachment of the Senate president. Our members in the Senate are intelligent people who will not give lawlessness a place in the Senate.”
According to him, the defection of the Senate President to the PDP does not prevent him from holding his office, saying the constitution failed to indicate that the Senate president must come from the ruling party.
He said, “I will refer the APC senators to the constitution for better understanding of the laws of our country.”
Markarfi, however, threw his weight behind the restructuring of the country, saying that the country needs total restructuring in order to develop and advance its economy.
He said PDP will ensure that the country is restructured if the party return to power in 2019, saying that the party has the key to the myriads of challenges confronting the nation.
“The policy of the PDP is restructuring and I can assure you that we will restructure this country. The Police will be restructured, so also the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Each political party must have a representative in INEC and that is what the PDP will do if we take over the government,” he said.

DPO removed in Lagos for allegedly extorting money from innocent Nigerians

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Pen Cinema Police station, Harrison Nwabuisi, has been removed over allegations bordering on corruption.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, ordered his removal following a newspaper publication alleging gross professional misconduct during the Sallah day celebration.
The DPO, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) and some of his boys were alleged to have been carrying out illegal raids and extorting money from innocent persons around Agege area.
A statement by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, noted that the attention of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi, was drawn to a Newspaper publication of Friday, August 24, 2018, captioned “Power-drunk Lagos DPO leads team to mosque, raid adherents, others.”
Oti said that in the publication the reporter, mentioned that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pen Cinema Police Division, Lagos State, Harrison Nwabuisi, has been conducting raids during which he allegedly arrested innocent residents and extorted money from them.
“Sequel to the allegation, the CP has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, DCP Yetunde Longe, to investigate the officer and other ranks against whom the allegation was made. He equally directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, DCP Elkanah Ayuba, to recall the DPO to the Command Headquarters to allow unbiased investigation into the matter.
“While recognising the fact that raiding is a major crime fighting strategy of the police, given that it enables proactive intervention into a budding problem, the CP however said, that it must be purposeful, corruption free and Intelligence driven,” he added.

Sarri warns Chelsea not to sell Hazard to Real Madrid

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri, has told the club not to sell Eden Hazard, as they will be unable to secure a replacement.
Clubs in the Premier League can no longer buy players, but the European transfer window is still open until August 31.
Hazard has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid, but Sarri, speaking at his Friday press conference, made it clear it would be unwise to allow the Belgian leave.
“I am the coach of a very good team. I am the coach of a very great club.
“It’s so important that such an important club cannot sell a very important player without the possibility to buy another very important player at the same level.
“I think Eden will stay with us for all of the season,” the Italian coach said.

Defiant Emery vows to stick to his guns as Arsenal chase first win

Unai Emery insists Arsenal’s spluttering start to the season won’t stop him overhauling his team’s style of play.
Emery has been criticised for changing Arsenal’s tactics too quickly after the Gunners were beaten by Manchester City and Chelsea in their first two Premier League games.
With Arsenal hosting West Ham on Saturday, the London derby against Manuel Pellegrini’s team — also losers in their opening games — offers Emery a chance to steady the ship.
The Spaniard is in his first season at the Emirates Stadium after replacing Arsene Wenger and has moved quickly to alter the game-plan preferred by his predecessor.
Where Wenger demanded Arsenal played an all-out attacking system that often left them vulnerable at the back, Emery favours a high-tempo pressing game.
The former Paris Saint Germain boss also likes his goalkeeper and defenders to start moves with passing from the back, even when under pressure from opponents.
This has led to Arsenal putting themselves in difficult positions at times, but Emery is adamant the issues are just teething problems that will soon resolve themselves.
“In our process, we are going 38 matches against all the teams — whether you are playing against Manchester City, it’s the same as if you’re playing against West Ham on Saturday,” he said.
“There are three points on this game. It’s clear that every game demands different things tactically.
“After the first two matches, we have two defeats and we need to win this match against West Ham.”
West Ham’s visit gives Jack Wilshere a chance to prove Emery was wrong to let him leave.
Hammers midfielder Wilshere saw his 17-year stay with Arsenal come to an end in the close-season after Emery opted against giving the injury-prone England international a new contract.
“I spoke with him for 15 minutes here in Colney before he left,” Emery said.
“The first thing for me is I have respect for his career here. And then, he chooses what the best was for him in his future.
“On Saturday, I know that here, the supporters like him and have this respect also. I think there is a good reception for him here.
“Then we are going to play and we are going to think after that, for us to win. But I hope the best for his career.”
West Ham’s need for the points is just as great as Arsenal’s after defeats against Liverpool and Bournemouth.
Angry fans flooded out of the London Stadium well before the final whistle against Bournemouth, prompting Pellegrini to criticise the early leavers.
The former Manchester City boss, aware that Hammers supporters spent much of last season protesting against their club’s owners, called on the fans to stand by the team.
“It is not about how much I criticised the fans – it is how much the team needs the fans,” Pellegrini said.
“I perfectly understand if you are losing 4-1 or 5-1 and you have got five minutes till the game finishes, maybe you leave early to your house. But losing 2-1?
“At this moment the players need everybody together, the fans, the team, the manager, the owners – everybody.
“Maybe the fans had a reason, but I just wanted to clarify how important the fans for the result of the games.”

Senator Shehu Sani Holds Closed-door Meeting With President Buhari In Daura (Photos)

President Buhari and Senator Shehu Sani
Senator Shehu Sani, on Thursday, paid Sallah homage to President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, and thanked him for intervening in the crisis facing the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State.
Mr Sani, representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, who spoke to journalists after a closed door meeting with the president, said they deliberated on issues bordering on strengthening the APC through resolution of all internal strife in the party.
According to him, he used the opportunity to assure the president on the support of his constituency to his re-election bid in 2019.
He said: “I am also here to fully assure him of the support of my constituency, Kaduna Central, to his aspiration for the second term.

“I’m also here to assure him of my own wholehearted support to the success of his administration and his return to office for the second term.

“Those were the basic issues that we discussed with him and other issues that border on the need to strengthen our party; the need to end all internal strife and also the need to put heads, hearts and hands together for the success of his administration and also for the success of the party.’’
The senator stated that his decision to remain in the APC was not because his grievances against the party leadership in Kaduna State had been addressed, but due to the intervention of President Buhari and the national leadership of the party.
He, therefore, called on all aggrieved members of the APC in the National Assembly to put aside parochial interests and join hands with the party in promoting national interest for the general good of all citizens.
“Well, there is no human being without any grievances but when national interest is put at the front side you have to put aside other parochial interests.

“What we need to do as politicians and as people representing those who elected us is to always put the country first and know very well that we have both constitutional and moral duty to work to the progress of Nigeria and of this government.

“So, I think these are the basic issues which we discussed, grievances are natural but we have to know that we have a country that we need to keep and also we have a country that we need to support, so that it can progress,’’ he added.
On whether he has been assured of automatic ticket to seek re-election in 2019, Mr Sani said even he was not so keen about automatic ticket but the party had pledged to reward loyalty.
He, however, stressed that while rewarding members for their loyalty to the party, due process must be followed.
“I think the party had made it very clear and known to each and every person that there will be reward for loyalty but in every sense of the word due process of the party needs to be followed

“And as far as we are concerned, what matters most to us is not simply about automatic ticket but about the peaceful and transparent conduct of the 2019 election and also the very need for us as a people and as a nation to know that the fate of the country is on our hands.

“There is the need for us to keep aside all sectional, ethnic and religious differences for the progress of this country and going by the very fact that the President has intervened and chairman of the party has intervened – all family squabbles would certainly come to an end,’’ he said.

Sessions hits back as Trump says impeachment would sink economy

US President Donald Trump and his allies tried to head off mounting talk of his impeachment, warning it would sink the world’s largest economy and spark a public “revolt.”
Speaking on the eve of a closely-watched meeting of central bank chiefs on Friday, Trump again took aim at his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, prompting a rare reaction from the embattled justice department chief.
After Trump was implicated as a co-conspirator in two campaign finance violations, both of them federal felonies, he and his closest advisors offered dire words of warning about the consequences of removing him from office.
“I will tell you what, if I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash, I think everybody would be very poor,” the president warned in an interview aired Thursday on talk show “Fox and Friends.”
“I don’t know how you can impeach somebody who has done a great job.”
The president’s personal lawyer-cum-spokesman Rudy Giuliani echoed that stark warning, hinting at political unrest.
“You would only impeach him for political reasons and the American people would revolt against that,” he told Sky News while on a golf course in Scotland.
– New area of vulnerability –
The comments came after two of Trump’s former top aides — onetime campaign chairman Paul Manafort and longtime lawyer Michael Cohen — were found guilty of various financial crimes in a one-two punch for the president.
Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in the form of hush payments during the 2016 campaign to two women who alleged they had affairs with Trump. He said he had paid them at Trump’s request.
Although Cohen did not name the women, they were believed to be porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal.
Because the hush payments were intended to influence the outcome of the elections, they violated US laws governing campaign contributions, making Trump an — as yet — unindicted co-conspirator.
In another hammer blow Thursday, The Wall Street Journal and other US media said David Pecker, CEO of tabloid publisher American Media, had been given immunity by prosecutors investigating the payments, opening a new area of vulnerability for Trump.
Pecker’s company publishes the National Enquirer.
Sessions in the firing line
As the legal net closed in, Trump renewed attacks on Sessions in an apparent attempt to have him squash investigations that could endanger his presidency.
A president can be removed from office by Congress for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Trump has repeatedly berated Sessions for recusing himself from the federal probe into Russian election meddling, which has expanded into questions of collusion and obstruction of justice as well as the financial dealings of Trump associates.
“I put in an attorney general that never took control of the justice department,” he complained to Fox News, fueling rumors he may fire Sessions and install someone more pliant.
But Sessions quickly hit back, saying he would not be swayed in a remarkable public broadside.
“While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations,” he said.
Lawmakers from Trump’s own Republican Party warned the president they would not confirm a new attorney general if Sessions — a former senator — was fired.
“It would be a very, very, very bad idea to fire the attorney general because he’s not executing his job as a political hack,” said Senator Ben Sasse.
Hush payments ‘not a crime’?
Trump’s story about Cohen’s payments has changed multiple times over the past year, and in Thursday’s Fox interview, he tried to defuse the allegations in several ways.
He claimed his former lawyer “made the deals,” and insisted that Cohen’s actions were “not a crime,” while going on to claim that “campaign violations are considered not a big deal, frankly.”
Trump then said the hush payments were financed with his own money — to which Cohen had access — and that while he had no knowledge of them at the time, he had since been fully transparent.
In entering a guilty plea, Cohen said under oath that the payments were made “in coordination with, and at the direction of, a candidate for federal office” — a clear reference to Trump.
Cohen also has pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud.
Asked if he was considering a pardon for Manafort, Trump told Fox only that he has “great respect for what he has done, in terms of what he has gone through.”
On Thursday, Trump ignored questions from the press on the issue.
