There is blood everywhere in Nigeria, remove Buhari now – Lamido declares in Benue

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has said that voting for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming general elections would cause more damages for Nigeria.
Lamido, who spoke when he paid a courtesy call on Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday, in Makurdi, said there was blood everywhere in Nigeria under the current leadership of the APC.
He maintained that already, the APC had introduced division, leading to venomous agenda, aimed at defrauding the country.
“I share in the anxiety of those who advocate that Nigeria should be restructured. APC is a party that thrives on propaganda and the money they have stolen is so horrendous and they keep talking about corruption.” He said.
Lamido continued, “Today, there is blood everywhere. We can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed due to killings and kidnapping by undesirable elements nationwide.
“Nigeria has a long history of crisis, including coup de tat among other vices and our leaders must put human consideration above other parochial interests so that the country can be better.
“We must uphold and stand for our brotherhood. We should be there for each other either as northerners or southerners, easterners or westerners”, he said adding that Nigeria as a symbol of the black race must be above board to live up to its status.
“Nigeria is a symbol of the black race meaning that any black man in diaspora look up to Nigeria for leadership. We must be mindful of what we do because whatever we do affects others.”
“We must work for a united Nigeria and secure the country from the hands of bad leaders,” he stated.

What Buhari told APC leaders, governors

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he was looking forward to the All Progressives Congress (APC) peaceful primaries nationwide.
He said this at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
Buhari said with General Elections coming in early 2019, any political party worth its salt must get its internal dynamics right, and march as a team towards a decisive time as that of major elections in a country.
He said: “Today, we are meeting to look at some major decisions that will get us ready for an excellent performance at the polls next year, starting with party primaries at various levels. I urge you all to ensure that decisions taken here today are those that will avail the good of the party, and ones that meet the yearnings and expectations of our teeming members and supporters nationwide. They look up to us for guidance, and we must not disappoint or fail them.
“Let me congratulate the current leadership of our party, led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The team emerged at a most turbulent time, when there were rumours and speculations of massive defection, in a way to possibly rock the very foundations of the party.
“Despite conciliatory attempts to keep the house together, some members were hell-bent on pulling down the roofs. They left, plotting to go along with scores of people, thus upsetting the apple cart. But due to the yeoman’s work by the new party leadership, the exit barely made a dent in our superstructure, as they could not muster the figures they had envisaged to cause an upset, particularly in the two chambers of the National Assembly. APC remains in control, and increases by the day, with quality people joining our fold. I say congratulations to the new NEC members.
“Hope is rekindled in our hearts that we will give our country purposeful leadership that will improve the quality of lives of the people. We will continue to secure the country, fight graft, and position the economy in a way that jobs can be provided for our youths, and give them a future and a hope.
“We will fulfill all the promises we have made to Nigerians. We are fulfilling them, and will continue to serve with heart and might, to build a nation where peace, justice, and prosperity shall reign.
“As we stand at the threshold of party primaries, I urge all and sundry to ensure that we play the game according to the rules. Let us come out with free, fair, and credible primaries, which will be a precursor to free, fair, and credible General Elections next year. Let us shine the light through our primaries, and the rest of the country will find the way.
“Our primaries must be in complete compliance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, the Electoral Act and above all the constitution of our great party, APC.
“The times in which we are call for unity, harmony and togetherness. Let us all join hands to move the party forward. We must take our party to the next level, and I urge all and sundry to give support to our National Working Committee.”

2019: Why Nigeria needs Lamido as president – Ortom

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, has stated that Nigeria is in dire need of a leader like Sule Lamido.
Ortom made this comment while playing host to Lamido on Thursday, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Engr. Benson Abounu, said that Nigeria had come a long way and it was only those who look at its history peripherally that would put the country into chaos.
The Governor lamented that politicians dwelt so much on politicking without measurable action which he said was responsible for Nigeria’s underdevelopment.
Ortom, however, pledged Benue’s total support towards the realisation of Lamido’s presidential ambition, maintaining that when Lamido gets in as the president, he will turn the country around as he did to Jigawa State when he was governor.
“We are only enjoying democracy today in Nigeriabecause of what the likes of Lamido started called G9. I believed that if God made him a President, Nigeriawould be better place. Nigeria Youths need sense of direction. Nigeria needs person like Lamido,” he said.

Rule of law: Adebanjo bombs Buhari

Ayo Adebanjo, an elder statesman, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to withdraw his statement that national security takes precedence over the rule of law.
While speaking at the 2018 annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja, Buhari had said he would not sacrifice national security for the rule of law.
But speaking during a meeting in Abuja, Adebanjo said the president’s comment was tantamount to rewriting the constitution.
“It is time to tell Mr. President that the statement he made that Sunday is treasonable; for you to rewrite the constitution (and say) that the rule of law is under the state security,” he said.
“The rule of law you are say is subject to national security and security of the state, who decides that, Mr. President? It will not work.
“We are going to demand from this meeting that he should withdraw that statement. That statement is very inappropriate and also amount to treason … to change the constitution of the whole country by the word of mouth. It is not right.
“When the leader of the nation tells you openly before lawyers and judges that he is rewriting the constitution of Nigeria, that the rule of law is subject to the security of the state and nation, the question is who decides the security of the state and nation?”
Adebanjo accused Buhari of clamping down on the opposition in the country as well as the fundamental rights of some Nigerians, particularly the freedom of expression.
“The man whom we are criticising is not taking it easy and is taking steps each day to silent opposition,” he said, adding: “If he takes Ayo Adebanjo today, Junaid you are not safe. Ango you are not safe the moment you criticise him. Junaid in particular you have to be careful because you are the one exposing his nepotism.”

Ronaldo’s agent blows hot after Modric wins UEFA Player of the Year

Jorge Mendes, agent to Cristiano Ronaldo, has lashed out at UEFA, after Luka Modric was named UEFA Player of the Year on Thursday.
Modric won the award ahead of his former Real Madrid team-mate, Ronaldo, who has since moved to Juventus and Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah.
Mendes called the decision “a scandal” and insists that his client should have won the prize.
“It’s a scandal; Cristiano should have won that.
“Football is played inside the four lines and Cristiano won there. He scored 15 goals and carried Real Madrid on his back to win the Champions League.
“It’s ridiculous he hasn’t won UEFA Player of the Year. He’s favorite for it and it’s just questionable,” Mendes told Record.

Wimpy Jonathan And The Restless Spirit Of Angry Reno Omokri

Churchill Okonkwo
In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe, painted the character Okonkwo as a man who has the compulsion to stand by and be everything his father, Unoka was not. Unoka was poor, a drunkard, and disgraceful to Okonkwo and his family. When Unoka died, he was placed in the Evil forest leaving his family with a dreadful debt. As a young man, therefore, Okonkwo feels the need to gain a high title to prove his deference from his father. To detach himself from his father and show that he is not weak, he takes out his anger on his wives and children in the form of violence.
It is known that Reno Omokri sees former President Goodluck Jonathan as his political father. Poor Jonathan grew up without shoes; it was rumored that he was a drunkard; he was also seen as a disgrace by PDP and Reno for easily conceding the 2015 election to Buhari. Jonathan’s weakness broke Reno’s political childhood and truncated his dream of amassing wealth to build a mega church. Like Okonkwo who could not move from his past, Reno is haunted by the failure of his political father. He has ever since been thirsty for revenge and thus addicted to the politics of anger.
Reno’s dream died sorrowfully following the loss suffered by the PDP in the 2015 elections. So, even though alive, his living-dead restless spirit did not make it to the ancestral homeland. In Igbo tradition, the consequence of not being eschatologically saved through ancestor hood is the akalogoli, (wandering spirits of mischief-makers). Thus, Reno has constituted himself to an akalogoli. His erratic wandering spirit has been lashing out at almost everyone including Soyinka, El-Rufai, Lai Mohamed, Oby Ezekwesili, victims of violence, EFCC, Overnors and even FFK.
After losing the 2015 elections, Reno’s restless spirit, in anger, un-plucked his heart, held it up momentarily before eating it. For Reno, the nastier, the better. Now, his anger at Buhari and anything about APC is fierce and incurable. His restless spirit wanders about the Nigerian landscape, courting disaster and praying to his god for anarchy to befall Nigerians. He has lost hope and is living in disappointment and bitterness, no joy and no love. Below are some examples.
Goodluck Jonathan conceded his presidential powers to Dame Patience. Reno never liked that and thus saw Jonathan as a wimpy leader. Like Okonkwo, Reno associates women with weakness. In Reno’s worldview women are portrayed as being irresponsible, weak, unreliable, wicked, dangerous and generally inferior to men. So, Reno lashed out at Oby Ezekwesili for criticizing Buhari, the same thing that he eats and breathes. His beef is that sister Oby opposed his poor hero President Jonathan. By characterizing Oby’s braveness as crying, Reno intent is to demean this woman of courage. And he calls him a “pastor”.
Reno’s wild rage is a sign of incompetence. Just like Okonkwo referred to Ezima, his favorite daughter as "wicked daughter of akalogoli!", Reno has often lashed out at his partner in crime Femi Fani-Kayode and PDP members with different views on political development in Nigeria. Thus, even members of his PDP family live in fear of his temper. His family is walking on eggshells around him, in terror that he might lash out at any time for any reason possible. And he calls him a “pastor”.
There is also something incoherent and morally ugly about Reno’s anger. His bitterness is like cancer. To tell you how bad the akalogoli spirit in Reno is, he recently violently lashed out at the victims of Benue, Taraba and Plateau conflict between farmers and herdsmen simply because Buhari carried their states in the 2015 election. Like Okonkwo, who out of anger killed Ikemefuna, Reno is rejoicing in the house of his Christian brothers and sisters (mourners) in these states even when some of them may have voted for Jonathan. And he calls himself a pastor.
Reno’s anger is either fruitlessly aimed at retribution, and thus irrational, or aimed at degradation of his fellow Christians that voted for APC, and thus immoral. It is, of course, mistaken to think that the suffering of the farmers in the Middle Belt and Nigerians will undo PDP’s loss in the 2015 elections. It is thus, a mistake of morality rather than reason for Reno to rejoice at the death or suffering of Nigerians as if that will restore his ego.
Reno feels a part of his heart broken by the rejection of his father Goodluck Jonathan and PDP. So, he turned his sadness into anger. Reno’s ugliness in heart has turned him inside out. His restless spirit derives joy from bitterness. For me, what is troubling is not the misfiring of the akalogoli Reno that calls himself a pastor, but the fact that there are a sizeable Nigerians that feel the same way. Clearly, Reno cannot find fulfillment in his life even with is “acclaimed Bestseller”.
One of the features of our political reality today is the misplacement of rage for justified anger. There is, of course, a place for righteous anger. Nigerians pushing for a new political order are expressing justifiable rage, while Reno and his likes are obvious cases of venting of misplaced rage. If wimpy Jonathan could make up with Bukola Saraki that stabbed him on the back before jumping to APC, why is Reno’s anger closed to reason and wholly violent against Nigerians?
In the traditional Igbo society, when the restless spirit of the dead is attacking his people, the community will invite a renowned dibia to carryout sacrifice of exorcism. The living-dead spirit in Reno is on a rampage and I am the dibia that has been called upon to expel the angry restless evil spirit in him. My sacrifice of chasing away the evil spirit called ichupu mmuo ojo in Reno is simple; first, stop him from acting like that market woman that goes from market to market looking for who to quarrel with and then, make him emulate his political father Goodluck Jonathan.
Just like Unuka, Okonkwo’s father in Things Fall Apart died poor, Goodluck Jonathan, Reno’s political father may have retired from politics poor (excluding Patience Jonathan’s millions of dollars), but they both understand that angry people are not always wise. Jonathan understands that anger in its truest form is a vice that demeans us by dragging us into negative thoughts and perhaps even more negative actions that harm others. Jonathan’s virtues of civility and calm should be emulated by his political son Reno that is often volcanic and off the rail.
Finally, Reno Omokris’ fixation on Buhari is an addictive disorder. Nigerians have the right to voice justified anger at Buhari and APC administration. We should, however, avoid normalization of misplaced rage in the public sphere that might lead to violent degradation of political life and disclosure. Just raising our voices on our failed political leaders is hardly sufficient. The 2019 election is a few months away. So, rather than just raging blindly, we should channel our anger to constructively mobilize the electorate and take our country back at the ballot box.
Together, we can.

Deadly clashes resume near Libya's capital

Vice President of the Presidential Council of Libya Ahmed Maiteeq speaks during a press conference in Tripoli on August 30, 2018, after clashes near Libya capital.
At least 27 people have been killed and 100 wounded in several days of fighting between rival militias near the Libyan capital, the health ministry said on August 30, 2018. The clashes broke out on Monday in suburbs south of Tripoli and continued into Wednesday evening after a truce collapsed, despite an appeal by the United Nations for calm.
/ AFP PHOTO / Mahmud TURKIA
Violent clashes resumed late Thursday afternoon between rival militias south of the Libyan capital, just hours after a truce was announced to end fighting that has killed almost 30 people since Monday.
The fighting broke out on Monday in suburbs south of Tripoli and continued into Wednesday evening after a truce collapsed, despite an appeal by the United Nations for calm.
The clashes had paused on Thursday after a ceasefire agreement announced by officials from western areas, but by late afternoon the hostilities had resumed.
Residents in the Khellat al-Ferjan area reported the use of heavy weapons and rifle fire.
Two teenagers were killed when a rocket hit a house in the Sebia district, according to a local official and AFP journalists on the scene.
The health ministry had earlier said at least 27 people were killed and 91 were wounded in this week’s fighting, most of them civilians.
Fayez al-Sarraj, the leader of the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), has tasked forces from western and central regions of Libya with ensuring the rivals adhere to the ceasefire.
These forces are meant to guarantee the withdrawal of the two rival camps from front lines and ensure normal life returns in the districts affected by the fighting.
– To be ‘held accountable’ –
The proposed pacifying forces consist mainly of powerful armed groups from the cities of Misrata and Zintan in the west, which are technically under the GNA’s defence ministry.
Under the orders of Sarraj, who heads the Libyan army, these military units will be allowed to operate in the capital and its environs only until September 30, when they must leave.
The Misrata and Zintan militias controlled the Libyan capital from the fall of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011 until 2014, when a coalition of militias mainly from Misrata seized the city.
This week’s fighting has pitted Tripoli militias loyal to the GNA against the so-called 7th Brigade.
This unit is from the town of Tarhuna southeast of the capital and is supposed to operate under the GNA’s defence ministry.
In a televised speech, Sarraj said on Thursday that the 7th Brigade had been “dissolved” since April, before calling on the rival camps to respect the ceasefire.
In a joint statement, the embassies of Britain, France, Italy and the United States on Thursday said they were “deeply concerned about the recent clashes in and around Tripoli that are destabilising the situation”.
“Pursuing political aims through violence will only further exacerbate the suffering of the population of Libya, and threaten broader stability”, the statement said.
“Those who undermine Libya’s peace, security and stability will be held accountable.”
Separately on Thursday, the UN’s refugee agency said it had helped earlier in the week to evacuate hundreds of migrants held in a detention centre close to where clashes were raging.
Some 300 migrants — mainly from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia — were transferred Tuesday to the capital’s Abu Salim detention centre, “which is in a relatively safer location where international organisations can provide aid to them”, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said.
The Libyan capital has been at the centre of a battle for influence between armed groups since Kadhafi’s fall.
Successive transitional authorities, including the GNA, have been unable to form an functioning army or regular security forces and have been forced to rely on militias to keep the city safe.
In mid-2017, pro-GNA militias neutralised several rival groups in Tripoli. Since then, clashes have been rare.

2019: Not Too Young To Run Dissociates Self From Saraki’s Declaration

Senate President Bukola Saraki

The Not Too Young To Run movement has dissociated itself from Senate President Bukola Saraki’s declaration of his intention to run for the presidency in 2019.
The Senate President announced that he was joining the race on Thursday while delivering a keynote address at a town hall for youths and young aspirants organised by the Not Too Young To Run Movement in Nigeria’s capital Abuja.
In a statement after the event, the movement condemned Dr Saraki’s action and said it was shocked that he would usurp a platform for youth engagement with political parties to declare his candidacy.
The group added that the Senate President did not have any prior discussion with it about the declaration, neither did he seek permission to make the move during the event.
“The movement wishes to express its disappointment with Senator Saraki for usurping a platform designed for young aspirants to dialogue with party leadership to advance his personal political ambition,” it said.
“We strongly condemn this act by the President of the Senate.”
The movement, which campaigned successfuly for the reduction of age limitation for several elective positions in the country to enable young people to run for office, insisted that it remained a non-partisan, citizen-led movement for democracy and transformational leadership.
“As noted earlier, the movement reaffirms its identity as a non-partisan citizen-led movement dedicated to the defence of democracy, political inclusion and transforming leadership,” it said.
“The movement restates its commitment to sustain its engagement with political parties to ensure youth candidacy and democratic party primaries.”

Presidential Convention: PDP moves to prevent post-convention crisis

Uche Secondus

By Dirisu Yakubu
ABUJA- Ahead of the Presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) slated for October, the leadership of the party has initiated moves to curtail a possible post-convention crisis, given the growing number of aspirants for the Office of the President in the 2019 election.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party led by Prince Uche Secondus, late Wednesday night, met with 12 of the Presidential aspirants at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. The meeting which had in attendance prominent aspirants including former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Tanimu Turaki and former governors of Sokoto, Kaduna, Plateau and Kano State-Attahiru Bafarawa, Ahmed Makarfi, Jonah Jang and Ibrahim Shekarau respectively, amongst others, according to party sources, succeeded in having the contenders sworn to a single goal.
According to the source who pleaded anonymity, the party prevailed on the Presidential hopefuls to eschew negative utterances capable of hurting the electoral fortune of the PDP in the 2019 elections.
“By and large, we reminded them (aspirants) that whatever happens to the party, happen to all of us. We charged them to be civil in their utterances and reminded them that the world is watching how the party will come up with its Presidential candidate.
“Perhaps, the biggest take-away from the meeting was the agreement entered into by all the aspirants to support whoever emerges winner of the sole ticket after the primaries. They assured us that they would stay put in the party regardless of the outcome of the primary election,” he said.
Addressing newsmen at the end of the meeting, Saraki noted that all aspirants decided to meet with the party leadership primarily to promote oneness of purpose and to ensure Nigerians of the primacy of national interest at all times.
He stated, “We came here to promote unity, cooperation and to stay focused on our message to Nigerians. We are here to show that our party, the PDP is united because for us, what matters are the Nigerian people and not our individual interests.”
On his part, the lawmaker representing Kano Central District at the National Assembly and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, again condemned the events that culminated in his formal Presidential declaration in Abuja on Wednesday. Bemoaning what he called a growing culture of impunity in the nation’s polity, the lawmaker said the level of political intolerance in the country today is worse compared to 2015.
“It (non-approval of the use of Eagle Square) was a sad day for democracy. We all thought that the days of impunity were over but Nigerians can now see that they are worse. In 2015, I requested for Eagle Square but they decided to give us the (old) Parade ground. This time around, we requested for Eagles Square. We paid and followed the procedures but they said no. So we requested for the Parade ground which they gave us in 2015 but it was not granted,” recalled Kwankwaso.
Thus far, 13 aspirants are gunning for the sole ticket of the PDP as the party insists it would not compel the contenders to adopt one of them as a consensus candidate.

BREAKING: Tambuwal picks PDP presidential nomination form

Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal has picked the presidential nomination form of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Tambuwal is one of the Governors who recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.
He arrived at Wadata Plaza headquarters of the party in Abuja with his supporters on Thursday evening.
This is coming weeks after he declared that he had been under tremendous pressure, to join the 2019 presidential race.
Speaking with reporters after picking the form, Tambuwal was asked about going head to head against President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
“I believe you need to check my political antecedents. I have always been confronted with this kind of hostile environment.
“You remember how I emerged as Speaker of House of Representatives and how I remained there as Speaker of House of Representatives.
“So I am not discouraged by whatever that may come up as a challenge from the administration,” he replied.
Earlier in the day, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, also formally declared his intention to run for the presidency under the umbrella of the PDP.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to pick the party’s presidential ticket for the 2019 elections as he has no major challenger.
The APC, however, declined to adopt direct primaries for other positions.
Direct primaries involves the participation of all party members in the selection of party candidates while indirect primaries involves use of delegates, often party leaders at local levels and political appointees as well as elected officials, to elect party candidates.
The Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, made these known while addressing journalists at the end of the NEC meeting on Thursday afternoon.
The governor said states will continue with indirect primaries except when an issue of importance arises.
The decision to adopt indirect primaries may anger some of the party’s senators, some of whom have said they would leave if such decision is taken.
Many senators fear governors who control the party structure in their states would determine eventual candidates if indirect primary method is adopted.
Mr Lalong said the meeting was anchored on three main points; guidelines for election, mode of election and funding.
He also noted that the APC NEC emphasised the need for unity following the gale of defection experienced.
The APC NEC meeting was attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, his deputy Yemi Osinbajo, many governors and others.

Buhari Media Organization Reacts ToDonald Trump's Insulting Comment About The President's Health

Buhari and Trump
After a Financial Times USA report claimed that the American President had made disrespectful comments over President Buhari's health issues, the Buhari Media Organization has reacted.
The FT report claimed that Trump said Buhari is 'lifeless', BMO, asserted that, “President Muhammadu Buhari is fit and capable to run for the 2019 elections and oversee the affairs of the country for four more years President Donald Trump’s hate speech notwithstanding.”
The statement, jointly signed by Niyi Akinsiju and Cassidy Maduekwe, its Chairman and Secretary respectively, noted that the US President was fond of making such derogatory remarks at World leaders.
According to the group, President Buhari would not be distracted by derogatory remark.
“We are aware that President Trump’s disrespect for World Leaders is not new; his comments on Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, calling him ‘meek and mild’; his reference to Germany’s Leader, Angela Merkel’s actions as ‘insane’, or his outlandish Tweet at the UK’s Theresa May, and more recently, the alleged remarks he made after meeting President Buhari.
“It is indeed not the first time President Trump would be heard to lower the standards of respect for his colleagues on the World Stage. We are not surprised, we know that this age-long character of the US President would not change anytime soon.

“But it is important that we put it on record that President Buhari remains fit and sprightly, even for the next decade”, they added.
“We recall that during President Buhari’s visit to Trump in the White House, the US President commended the successes that the Buhari administration had recorded especially in the fight against insurgency and the war on corruption.
“The US President was full of admiration for Nigeria’s President during the visit, thus such outlandish remarks as reported by the Financial Times are not just to be taken with a pinch of salt but are untrue in themselves.”

EPL: Mourinho fighting for his job after Manchester United are battered by Spurs

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, is fighting to save his job after the crisis at the club deepened with another shambolic defeat, the UK Mirror reports.
United were beaten 3-0 by Tottenham, thanks to three second-half goals from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura (twice).
Tottenham fans taunted Mourinho with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, after Mauricio Pochettino’s side piled the pressure on the under-fire United boss.
Mourinho needed a win after United’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton, but watched on as his side lost for the second game running.
United have now lost two of their opening three Premier League fixtures, for the first time since the 1992/1993 season.
Mourinho now faces a battle to prove he is the man to turn around their fortunes. The Portuguese is already at odds with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, over the latter’s failure to deliver all the transfer targets he identified this summer.
Woodward sat stoney-faced in the United directors’ box, as the team side unravelled before him. The Old Trafford supremo faces a tough decision over what to do to halt the current slide.

APC reacts to PDP Chairman, Salvador’s defection

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the defection of the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Moshood Salvador, as the end of the opposition party in the state.
DAILY POST reports that Salvador announced his defection to the APC along with his supporters at his residence in Lagos.
He said he took the decision because all his efforts to reposition the PDP were frustrated by some elders of the party.
Salvador added that he was leaving PDP because the party abandoned him while he was being detained in connection with the murder of Mr. Adeniyi Aborishade.
Reacting to his defection, Mr. Abiodun Salami, Assistant Publicity Secretary of APC in the state, told NAN that APC’s coffin had finally been nailed in the state.
He said that if the chairman of the opposition could defect to the APC, it meant something was seriously wrong with the PDP in the state.
Salami described Salvador’s action as a welcome development, saying the party was expecting more defections into the APC both at the state and national levels.
“We are happy with the defection of Salvador and others. It is good news to our party the APC and bad omen to PDP.
“If the Chairman of a party could move to another party, it means something is seriously wrong with the PDP.
“We have said it before that PDP is dead in Lagos, and this new development has finally nailed the coffin of the party in the state.
“The APC is the progressive party, it is the party to be. People are joining by the day, and we are expecting more defections both at the state and national levels in the coming weeks,” he said.
Salami said the party would not discriminate against the defectors but would provide a level playing ground for them to realise their political goals.

Nobody can Islamise Nigeria, SGF assures Christians

By Marie-Therese Nanlong

Jos —Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mr. Boss Mustapha, has assured Christians that the notion that there were attempts to Islamise Nigeria was a dummy being sold by enemies of the country, who were out to plunge it into religious war.
Boss Mustapha
The SGF, who spoke at a two-day Peace Summit organised by Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Northern Region in Jos yesterday, said the Federal Government remained committed to ending the current insecurity facing the country and called for the support of all.
He said: “I must correct the dummy being sold by some rumour-mongers about the issue of Islamising Nigeria, nobody can. I call on the church to always continue to speak the truth at all times. Nobody can kill the gospel, let’s continue to be our brothers’ keepers at all times and continue to preach peace.
“We must reject those who propagate hatred, ethnicity, divisiveness, sectionalism or seek to manipulate religious differences for political gains.”
Also, Major General Paul Tarfa (retd), who delivered a keynote address at the event, urged Christian religious leaders, especially those in Northern Nigeria, to encourage their congregation to participate in politics and vote for candidates of their choice but desist from dragging the church into politics.
Speaking on the theme, “Sustainable Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria as a Panacea for Development: The Role of Christian Religious Leaders, Tarfa added that Christian leaders would be seen to have contributed to peace, security and development if they should, as a matter of priority, forge unity among all denominations and speak with one.
He said: “The role of Christian religious leaders in peace is essential for growth and development of any nation. The subject we are looking at today is how peace and security can be sustained in the northern part of the country as a panacea for the much-needed stability and development.
“One may ask: who is a Christian religious leader? To me, this includes all church leaders as well as Christians who are in leadership position anywhere. Christian religious leaders play a vital role in building peace and security in Northern Nigeria and elsewhere in the country.
“They are at the core of morals of society, which in turn determines behaviour of the people they lead, and the way we interact with others.
“As our West African sub-region and particularly our country is bedevilled with all sorts of insecurity, challenges ranging from insurgency, militancy and kidnapping, herdsmen/farmers clashes, hate speech, religion is slowly and deliberately being exploited for political end.
“Christian religious leaders encourage their congregation to participate in politics and vote for candidates of their choice but desist from dragging the church into politics.’’
However, the state governor, Simon Lalong, who declared the event opened, said the theme of the summit was apt and draws to mind, the necessity of peace and security as a panacea for sustainable development.
He said: “The theme for this summit is no doubt apt and draws to mind the essentiality of peace and security as a panacea for sustainable development beyond our state.
‘’We remain resolute in our commitment to building an enduring legacy of peace beyond Plateau and we shall not relent in exploring all avenues that will help us in the sustenance of peace and security.”
‘’I must thank you for sharing in the conviction that we hold so dearly as a people of faith in Northern Nigeria, and I wish to assure you that Northern Nigeria is project in God’s hand and the strength of our conviction is that we are on a journey to a bright future which id secured in the hands of God.
“As a people of faith, we must underscore our common humanity as we seek to find within the dictates of our faith, those essentials that defines us as human beings and for which, we hold our accountability in that same faith to our callings as Christians.
‘’I am confident that as Christian Leaders gathered on a common platform for the simple task of activating our faith with action, we would be stimulating in the course of this summit the kind of works that will give visible expression to the dictates of our faith, which will further help us identify the onerous responsibility that we have as a people of faith in the Peace Project in Nigeria.”
The summit attracted Christian leaders in the 19 Northern states and the FCT and the National President of CAN, Rev. Supo Ayokunle, who was represented at the event.
