Watch what you say against Buhari, Group warns Tambuwal

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has faulted the recent comments by Sokoto State Gov. Aminu Tambuwal against President Muhammadu Buhari, describing such as unfortunate, ill-conceived and a total assault on African cultural values.

President Muhammadu Buhari
The Chairman and the Secretary of the group, Messrs Niyi Akinsiju and Cassidy Madueke, respectively, said this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.
The BMO said that Tambuwal had in recent time engaged in deliberate campaign of calumny against the President and warned that the governor was on a road to perdition just like Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in 2015.
“This infamous style of politics belonged in the past and it is necessary to remind Tambuwal that it is not African tradition for young people to insult their elders and such negative attitude usually had its consequences.
“We also advise Governor Tambuwal to draw a lesson from what happened to Ayo Fayose in the last Ekiti governorship election, as he was roundly rejected by the electorate due to his non-performance and unguarded utterances.
“We also want to assure Tambuwal that his case will not be different from that of Ayo Fayose, as he will not only be rejected as the next governor of Sokoto state, but his presidential ambition will remain a pipe-dream.
Tambuwal
“As he has not only denied his people development but has wasted the scarce resources he ordinarily should have used to render service to the good people of Sokoto state,” the statement read in part.
The group predicted that Tambuwal would definitely go into political oblivion in 2019 as he was already running against the tide.
The organisation also reminded Tambuwal that Buhari’s integrity and track record were clear for everyone to see, and this was the reason for their continued support for him and those he supported in elections.
According to the BMO, the support also manifested in the recent by-elections in Bauchi, Kogi and Katsina states where the All Progressives Congress (APC) trounced all their opponents including Tambuwal’s PDP.
The group expressed optimism that Buhari would win the next presidential election with a landslide.

Annan Lashed Out At State Of Global Leadership Before Death

Former UN chief Kofi Annan, who died on Saturday, lashed out at the state of global leadership in an exclusive interview with AFP last year, urging more cooperation to deal with terrorism, migration and climate change.
“Honestly speaking, we are in a mess,” the Nobel peace laureate said on December 12 ahead of a major climate conference in Paris.
“In the past when we went through this sort of crisis, you had leaders who had the courage and the vision to want to take action, to understand that they needed to work with others.”
Speaking two years to the day after the Paris climate deal was agreed — and following President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would leave the pact — Annan remembered “the enthusiasm, the excitement and the energy that was brought to bear” in 2015.
“When you walk away from a conference like this, you expect people to go away fully determined to implement, to continue and move,” he said.
“But that hasn’t happened, I think. We’ve slackened a bit… We haven’t followed through.”
“We must also remember that only promises that are kept are promises which matter.”
“Today, leaders are going in the wrong direction,” Annan said. “Leaders are withdrawing.”
He expressed particular concern over escalating tensions with North Korea, warning: “One miscalculation, one mistake and we are all victims”.
“It may not be a deliberate decision to start a nuclear war,” he added, adding that inflammatory rhetoric — without mentioning Trump or North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by name — was not helping.
Annan spoke to AFP as part of The Elders group of senior statesmen and women.
There was an outpouring of grief-stricken tributes on Saturday from leaders around the world for Annan after his foundation announced he died at the age 80 after a short illness.

President Muhammadu Buhari has mourned the death of former Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Kofi Annan.
In a telephone call to President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana on Saturday from London, President Buhari commiserated with the government and people of the country on the passing of the former UN scribe.
President Buhari said all Nigerians and ECOWAS member countries share in the deep loss, considering the strategic influence of the deceased in global affairs and his vision for the repositioning of the West Coast and Africa.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, he said Annan’s origin and home would always be traced to Ghana, but his exceptional leadership roles, humanitarian spirit, and contributions to global peace and development would remain permanent in the history of the entire world, especially the efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa and launch of the UN Global Compact.
The President recalled that Annan was the first elected staff of the United Nations to lead the world organisation and first African to win the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the United Nations.
He said the humility, nobility, and love for humanity by the former UN scribe set him apart for global greatness, achieving recognition and commendation for the reform of the United Nations’ bureaucracy and multiple interventions to bring peace to the world.
President Buhari condoled with the wife of the diplomat, Nane Maria Annan, as well as his family members, the staff of the United Nations, and the global organisations he was heading, like ‘The Elders’ which was founded by Nelson Mandela.
He prayed that the Almighty God would comfort Annan’s family and all his loved ones.
Mr Annan died on Saturday morning at the age of 80 in Switzerland after a brief illness.

Federer Strikes Down Fellow Swiss To Reach Cincy Semis

World number two Roger Federer posted his second win of the day, amid a lightning fear interruption, to reach the semi-finals of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters on Friday.
The seven-time champion beat fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (8/6), 6-2.
The match was interrupted for 21 minutes with players being sent off court and crowds told to seek shelter as a storm cell passed near the site.
But after the pause, the pair came back out, with Federer finally securing the first break of the match on his seventh chance to take a 4-2 lead over his longtime rival.
Federer closed out a victory two games later and will face David Goffin after the Belgian beat Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4).
Federer began his day by beating Leo Mayer 6-1, 7-6 (8/6).
“It’s quite unusual to stop for lightning,” Federer said after beating Wawrinka for the 23rd time in 26 meetings.
“I didn’t know if it meant the end of the night or that we would come back.
“I got my energy back for the third set, a momentum shift was good for me. It was also good that I was serving first.
“I played a cleaner third set. I was clear with my game plan. It was good to win two matches today.”
Elsewhere, former world number one Novak Djokovic also won his second match of the day to set up a semi-final clash with Marin Cilic.
Djokovic, a five-time finalist here who has never broken through, is aiming to lift the trophy at the only one of the Masters 1000 series events that he has never won.
The Serb tenth seed followed up a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 third-round defeat of holder Grigor Dimitrov earlier in the day of a rainy week by beating Milos Raonic 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
It was the ninth win without a loss for Djokovic in the series with the Canadian.
“I’ve played five finals here,” Djokovic said. “But I do wish to win the title.
“I’m here to enjoy a sport that I love, I’ve got plenty of motivation. I’m in a good position, so I’ll take it step by step.”
Djokovic had to come from behind in the first and third sets and helped seal the victory with a break for 5-3 in the third.
“Milos is one of the best servers in the game,” Djokovic said. “Just a few points decided the winner.
“It’s tough to play against someone serving so big.”
Cilic put out Spanish 13th seed Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6 (9/7), 6-4.
“I haven’t played any matches on the center court. I feel and I heard that it’s completely different. It’s much faster,” Cilic said.
“Definitely Novak is playing really well. His level was definitely high and he’s indefinitely really good form.
“We played a tough match in Queen’s, but that’s grass and definitely different. So I have to get ready and give it a full shot.”
Women’s top seed Simona Halep recovered from 1-4 down in the opening set to defeat Lesia Tsurenko 6-4, 6-1.
It was the second fightback of the day for Halep, who came from a break down in each set to overhaul Australian 16th seed Ashleigh Barty 7-5, 6-4 several hours earlier in the third round.
Double Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova reached the final four over Belgian Elise Mertens 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
She will face Kiki Bertens after the Dutchwoman defeated Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3.

Kofi Annan: the UN’s ‘rock star’ secretary-general

Kofi Annan, who died Saturday at the age of 80, led the United Nations through the divisive years of the Iraq war and the trauma of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The first secretary-general from sub-Saharan Africa, Ghanaian-born Annan was credited for raising the UN’s profile during his two-term tenure, from January 1997 to December 2006.
Kofi Annan
The charismatic, quiet-spoken career diplomat will be remembered as the United Nations’ star secretary-general — and arguably the world body’s most popular leader.
But, as peacekeeping chief, two of the UN’s darkest chapters — the Rwandan genocide and the Bosnian war — happened on his watch.
“I have sought to place human beings at the center of everything we do — from conflict prevention, to development, to human rights,” Annan said in his 2001 speech after accepting the Nobel Peace Prize.
At the time, as the world was reeling from the September 11 attacks, Annan and the organization were jointly given the honor “for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.”
– Promoted from within –
Annan — the seventh secretary-general — devoted four decades of his working life to the United Nations and was the first chief to rise from within the organization’s ranks.
After heading up UN human resources and then its budget office, he was appointed peacekeeping chief in 1993, a post he held until he was catapulted to the top UN job four years later.
In recent years, Annan had returned to the diplomatic stage to lead an advisory commission in Myanmar on the crisis in Rakhine state.
He had encouraged the government to grant citizenship to the Muslim Rohingya. More than 700,000 Rohingya were driven out of Rakhine in an army campaign last year.
He also set up a foundation devoted to conflict resolution and joined the Elders group of statesmen, which regularly speaks out on global issues.
– UN failures –
In his autobiography “Interventions: A Life in War and Peace,” Annan wrote that he envisioned the United Nations as serving “not only states but also peoples” as “the forum where governments are held accountable for their behavior toward their own citizens.”
The UN’s failures to live up to that promise in Rwanda and Bosnia would shape Annan’s tenure as secretary-general, he wrote.
The blue helmets pulled out of Rwanda in 1994 during the bloody chaos and a year later, the world body failed to protect its own “safe area” of Srebrenica when Bosnian Serb forces rounded up and killed thousands of Muslim men and boys.
Those debacles “left me with what would become my greatest challenge as secretary-general: creating a new understanding of the legitimacy, and necessity, of intervention in the face of gross violations of human rights,” Annan wrote.
– ‘Diplomatic rock star’ –
While Rwanda and Srebrenica cast a pall over his tenure as peacekeeping chief, Annan transitioned into his new role as UN chief with ease.
He quickly became a familiar face on television, his name made newspaper headlines, and he was a sought-after guest at gala events and New York dinner parties.
He was often described as a “diplomatic rock star.”
Annan owed his appointment to the United States, which had vetoed a second term for Egypt’s Boutros Boutros-Ghali after relations went sour, but he often proved his independence from major powers.
He annoyed the United States when he said the 2003 invasion of Iraq was “illegal” because it was not endorsed by the UN Security Council.
Annan was later accused of corruption in the Iraq oil-for-food scandal, one of the most trying times of his tenure.
Some commentators saw the 2005 investigation of Annan and his son as payback for his invasion comments.
A commission on inquiry cleared Annan of any serious wrongdoing, but found ethical and management lapses linked to his son Kojo’s ties with a Swiss firm that won lucrative contracts under the scheme.
Annan later admitted that the scandal had sorely tested his mettle not only as secretary-general, but as a father.
– From Ghana to Geneva –
Born in Kumasi, the capital city of Ghana’s Ashanti region, Annan was the son of an executive of a European trading company, the United Africa company, a subsidiary of the Anglo-Dutch multinational Unilever.
In his autobiography, he describes coming of age along with the independence movement in Ghana, and experiencing a “complete change in culture and society.”
He attended a Methodist-founded boarding school at the age of 13 and went to university in Kumasi before receiving a scholarship to study in the United States.
He studied economics at Macalester College in Minnesota and management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He also attended the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
In 1965, Annan married Titi Alakija, a Nigerian woman from a well-to-do family. They had a daughter, Ama, and Kojo, but the couple separated in the late 1970s.
He was married a second time in 1984 to Nane Lagergren, a Swedish lawyer at the United Nations and the niece of Raoul Wallenberg. They have a daughter, Nina.
After ending his second term as UN chief, Annan went on to take high-profile mediation roles in Kenya and in Syria.
He enjoyed some success in ending post-election turmoil in Kenya in 2007, but he resigned from a peace mission for Syria.
Annan complained that divisions among world powers at the Security Council had turned his job as Syria envoy into a “mission impossible.”
Former UN chief and Nobel peace laureate Kofi Annan died Saturday at the age of 80, triggering a flood of tributes from around the world for the “diplomatic rock star”.
The Ghanaian national was a career diplomat who projected quiet charisma and was widely credited for raising the world body’s profile in global politics during his two terms as head of the UN from 1997 to 2006.
The first secretary general from sub-Saharan Africa, Annan led the United Nations through the divisive years of the Iraq war and was later accused of corruption in the oil-for-food scandal, one of the most trying times of his tenure.
“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness,” the foundation said in a statement.
“His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side during his last days.”
Annan, who lived not far from the UN European headquarters in Geneva, died in hospital in the German-speaking part of the country, Swiss news agency ATS reported.
– ‘Guiding force for good’ –
Current UN chief Antonio Guterres described his predecessor as “a guiding force for good”.
“In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations,” he said.
“He rose through the ranks to lead the organisation into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination.”
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said Annan was “a friend to thousands and a leader of millions”.
“Kofi was humanity’s best example, the epitome, of human decency and grace.”
The UN said it would fly flags at half mast at all of its locations around the world through Tuesday.
And Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo announced a week of mourning for “one of our greatest compatriots”.
In 2001, as the world was reeling from the September 11 attacks in the United States, Annan was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the world body “for their work for a better organised and more peaceful world”.
Another Nobel laureate, retired South African archbishop Desmond Tutu, described Annan as “an outstanding human being who represented our continent and the world with enormous graciousness, integrity and distinction.”
– ‘Diplomatic rock star’ –
Born in Kumasi, the capital city of Ghana’s Ashanti region, Annan devoted four decades of his working life to the UN and was the first chief to rise from within the organisation’s ranks.
In 1993, he took over as peacekeeping chief — a position he held through two of the UN’s darkest chapters: the Rwandan genocide and the Bosnian war.
His tenure as UN chief was tarnished by a 2005 investigation of Annan and his son over the oil-for-food scandal, seen by some as payback for his comments that the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq was “illegal”.
An inquiry cleared Annan of any serious wrongdoing, but found ethical and management lapses linked to his son Kojo’s ties with a Swiss firm that won lucrative contracts in the oil-for-food scheme.
Annan later admitted the scandal had sorely tested his mettle not only as secretary-general, but as a father.
Despite the lows, he left the post as one of the most popular UN leaders ever, and was considered a “diplomatic rock star” in international diplomatic circles.
After ending his second term as UN chief, he kept up his diplomatic work, taking high-profile mediation roles in Kenya and in Syria, and more recently leading an advisory commission in Myanmar on the crisis in Rakhine state.
He enjoyed some success in ending post-election turmoil in Kenya in 2007, and on Saturday the two main players in that crisis, former president Mwai Kibaki and his opposition rival Raila Odinga celebrated his efforts.
Annan resigned from the peace mission for Syria in 2012 after just a few months, saying a Security Council stalemate had turned it into a “mission impossible”.
He also set up his foundation devoted to conflict resolution and joined the Elders group of statesmen which speaks out on global issues.
– ‘Embodied the UN mission’ –
But he had recently spoken of his despair at the state of global leadership and the lack of will to engage in resolving crises.
“Honestly speaking, we are in a mess,” he told AFP in an exclusive interview last December, warning that “today, leaders are going in the wrong direction… leaders are withdrawing.”
Despite his criticism, current and former world leaders voiced their admiration for Annan.
Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed his “wisdom and courage”, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel celebrated the “exceptional statesman in the service of the global community.”
President Donald Trump had yet to comment, but the US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said Annan “worked tirelessly to unite us and never stopped fighting for the dignity of every person”.
Former US president Barack Obama earlier said Annan “embodied the mission of the United Nations like few others”.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg meanwhile said “Annan showed that one can be a great humanitarian and a strong leader at the same time.”
“The UN and the world have lost one of their giants.”

Kofi Annan: UN mourns former Secretary-General

The United Nations has reacted to the death of its former Secretary-General, Kofi Annan.
The current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, paid glowing tributes to Annan, who headed the intergovernmental organisation from 1997 to 2006.
Guterres in a statement hailed Annan as “a guiding force for good” and a “proud son of Africa who became a global champion for peace and all humanity.”
“Like so many, I was proud to call Kofi Annan a good friend and mentor.
“I was deeply honoured by his trust in selecting me to serve as UN High Commissioner for Refugees under his leadership.
“He remained someone I could always turn to for counsel and wisdom – and I know I was not alone.
“He provided people everywhere with a space for dialogue, a place for problem-solving and a path to a better world.
“In these turbulent and trying times, he never stopped working to give life to the values of the United Nations Charter. His legacy will remain a true inspiration for us all.”
Annan was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, after Egyptian diplomat, Boutrous Boutrous-Ghali exit in December 1996.

Corruption Allegations: PDP tasks Buhari to clear FG, APC

Opposition politics, especially in fledgling democracies often face a herculean task in the quest to garner sufficient votes to form governments at the centre.
The party in power on the hand has little to contend with, given the avalanche of resources at its disposal with which it implements programmes and policies aimed at winning the confidence of the people at all times.

It is therefore not surprising that an almost legitimate clash of interests exist between the opposition and government.
However, the major opposition party in the land, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took the game to the court of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC), tasking both to clear the air on a litany of issues bordering on corruption and abuse of office.   Addressing a press conference at its headquarters, the PDP asked President Buhari to justify what it called the selective form of his administration’s fight against corruption.
According to the party, the Commander-in-Chief must break his silence on allegations of grafts allegedly perpetrated at the nation’s cash cow, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) under his watch.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan put it succinctly when he said, “The PDP challenges President Buhari to explain why his anti-corruption fight has not been extended to investigate the corruption from the leaked memo detailing alleged underhand oil contracts to the tune of N9 trillion ($25billion dollars) at the NNPC and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, which are under the direct supervision President Buhari as Minister of Petroleum Resources. Why has investigation into this scam been suppressed?
“The PDP challenges President Buhari to explain to Nigerians whose interest he is protecting by refusing to allow an independent inquest into the alleged corruption in the handling of the N1.4 trillion oil subsidy regime allegedly involving officials at the Presidency, particularly those benefiting from alleged N58 hidden tax per liter which Nigerians have continued to bear since the fuel price increased from PDP subsidized cost of N87 to presumably unsubsidized cost of N145.”
Not done, the PDP further tasked President Buhari and the “APC to explain whose interests they are protecting by suppressing investigation into the alleged use of 18 unregistered companies to lift and divert N1.1 trillion worth of crude oil in 2017. Who are the owners of these companies?
It resurrected the alleged mismanagement of the funds meant for the rehabilitation of victims of insurgency which ravaged parts of the North-East for years.
“The PDP challenges the Buhari Presidency and the APC to explain to the world why his anti-corruption fight has not been extended to the internationally reported diversion and alleged stealing of N18 billion out of the N48 billion approved by the National Assembly for the rehabilitation of millions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and rebuilding of six northeast states ravaged by insurgency in the 2017 budget.
“Can the Buhari Presidency and APC claim to be unaware of the damning report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a public document which detailed how officials were using bulk of the resources meant for the IDPs on contracts that were found to have immensely benefitted officials of the APC Government including the sacked Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal?
“Can the Presidency and the APC claim to be unaware of the motion by Senator Baba Kaka Garba from Borno Central, who exposed how persons, known to have connections with the APC, fraudulently cornered N1.2 billion from the Federal Government under the guise of supplying items to IDPs?” it had further asked.
Perhaps, the biggest of the posers was the one which has got many Nigerians wondering if President Buhari would react to in the next few days. A man seemingly trusted by the first citizen to head public property recovery panel is today enmeshed in scam bordering on criminality; same way a key cabinet Minister is today harvesting a barrage of flaks from across the country. While not directly flaying the President for complicity in the alleged conduct of the two government officials, the party condemned Buhari’s silence, likening same to playing the ostrich.
“It is a settled saying that birds of the same feathers flock together. The fact that President Buhari comfortably surrounds himself with persons indicted for corruption, sundry frauds, common scams as well as forgeries is very revealing on the phoniness of his administration’s fight against corruption.
“It is no longer news that one Okoi Obono-Obla, President Buhari’s Special Assistant on Prosecution and Chairman, Special Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property in Buhari’s anti-corruption team has been indicted for forging his WAEC certificate, yet his boss, Mr. Integrity has refused to investigate him.
“The same goes for Buhari’s Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, who has been accused of dodging her compulsory national service and allegedly forging the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) Exemption Certificate. Despite her inability to deny the allegation, she is still the Minister of Finance,” it noted.
Convenient as it is to accuse the PDP of trying to unsettle the ruling party and President Buhari with barely six months to the 2019 general elections; the bogus allegations of grafts remain too significant to be ignored given President’s status as a man who detests corruption in all shapes and forms. Already, insinuations are rife that the certificates’ scandal may fizzle out in no distant time; yet it is the President’s prerogative to prove these pessimists wrong or right.

Wayne Rooney: ‘Leo Messi is Better Than Cristiano Ronaldo’

Wayne Rooney & DC United

Wayne Rooney’s Premier League career is over.
Man United’s all-time record goalscorer spent one year back at Everton last season.
Despite scoring 11 Premier League goals for Everton, Rooney has now moved to DC United.
Rooney agreed a two and a half year contract to play for DC United.

Leo Messi > Cristiano Ronaldo

Rooney has appeared on the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast this week.
During the Q&A, Rooney was asked to say who is better: Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
Without a moment’s pause, Rooney listed Messi above Ronaldo.
Yet when it came for Rooney’s explanation, the forward struggled to give any convincing reasons why he snubbed his former Man United team mate

Rooney starts with a win

Wayne Rooney came off the bench last weekend to make his DC United and MLS debut.
When Rooney signed for DC United, they were the worst team in the MLS.
After 12 rounds of the MLS season, DC United only had 10 points on the board. They were five points behind second-bottom Toronto FC.
But Rooney helped inspire his new club to win last weekend against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Rooney set up Paul Arriola for DC’s third goal of the game. Arriola scored a brace after Yamil Asad opened.
DC United remain bottom of their league. However they’ve closed the gap on Toronto to just two points.

Peter Okoye finally reveals shocking reasons for splitting with his twin, Paul

Months after the split of the duo Psquare, Peter one half of the group explains that it was the disrespect directed towards himself and his family that pushed him to quit.

Peter Okoye, now known as Mr P, says his brother Paul would insult his wife and kids and expect a Psquare performance moments later.
Peter married Lola Omotayo-Okoye in 2015 and they have two children named Cameron and Aliona.
“In life what we call family value is important,” said the ‘Ebeano’ singer said on Citizen TV in Kenya.
“The fans want Psquare but how many times do you want Psquare to come back and break up.
“We’ve broken up three times and the same issue is still there. So if Psquare is going to come back we need to settle that issue. Psquare might come back, they might not come back.
Peter said he must put his wife and children first because of the vow he made on his wedding day.
“I pulled out the plug because I felt the disrespect coming from my family (was) getting too much,” he said.
“There’s something we call marginalisation. Don’t ever be a slave because you want to be family.
“Psquare can only come back if the respect comes 100 percent.

“I don’t disrespect my brother’s wife neither, his family but he does that to me all the time. He’ll insult me and my family in public, on Instagram, and the next minute he’ll wait for me backstage for us to perform together.
“I can’t do that. One thing is for sure, I took a vow to protect my wife and kids the day I got married and I stick to that.”

Teaching students to think, create rather than just recall will spur devt. — WAEC

West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says teaching to stimulate thinking among students, rather than merely recalling could be the tonic needed to take the country to the next level.
WAEC
The Council’s Head, Public Affairs, Mr Damianus Ojijeogu, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Lagos.
Ojijeogu was speaking against the backdrop of lessons learnt from the just concluded 36th Annual Conference of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).
Newsmen report that the conference with the theme: ‘Reforming Educational Assessment; A Renewed Agenda’ was held in Maseru in Lesotho, from Aug. 6 to Aug. 10.
According to him, research has shown that emphasis has always been placed on the “teaching to recall’’ mode for students in schools across the various levels of education.
He said that for countries to meet the demands of the 21st century, there must be a paradigm shift in teaching and learning method.
“This is one of the major lessons learnt from the conference, which was attended by 325 delegates from 27 countries across the globe, with 82 papers presented.
“One of the major issues discussed was seeking ways of encouraging thinking and creativity among students in the course of teaching and learning.
“It is discovered that it is time to wake up to this call by seeking another dimension to profitable learning other than just teaching students to recall.
“This new method that will inspire creativity and thinking in the process of teaching and learning could well be the much desired quest to accelerate technological advancement among nations,’’ he said.
Ojijeogu said that there was the need for Nigeria to look beyond the craze for certification by encouraging creativity among students as well as vocational education.
“Acquiring skills is the way to go now. This could be done side by side in the course of going through formal education.
“A keynote speaker at the conference also emphasised that for the 21st century knowledge, skills and expertise are key.
“It could be the panacea for job creation and empowerment among our young people, and therefore our country will be better for it.
“As critical stakeholders in the education sector, we are going to discuss and share our experience from the conference with the Federal Government and see how this could be imbibed in our system of education,’’ he said.
He said that already, the council had been handed the baton to host the 2019 annual conference of the association, which would take place in Abuja.
“I want to state here that we are fully ready to host the world come August 2019.
“It is a big event and we want to make the country proud by being the best in terms of hosting.
“We are also happy to announce that the council’s Head of National Office (HNO), Mr Olu Adenipekun, has been made the Vice President of the association for a one–year tenure,’’ Ojijeogu told newsmen.
The association is a non-profit making organisation established in 1982 to promote cooperation amongst examining and assessment bodies in Africa.
It is also to encourage relevant examining and assessment among members, sponsor international participation in the field of Educational Testing and Examination, as well as commission and coordinate research projects.
The association is affiliated to the International Association of Educational Assessment

APC charges EFCC, ICPC to step up probe of corrupt politicians before 2019

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) and other anti-graft bodies to intensify efforts at investigating and recovering public funds and assets that have been stolen by public officials.
Yekini Nabena, APC Acting National Publicity Secretary, in a statement on Thursday, said the call became imperative as the nation moves towards the 2019 general elections.
The ruling party said it was important that the Nigerian electorate have an opportunity to choose from candidates that can pass the integrity and corruption test.
According to the statement, “We must ensure that we never again entrust the leadership of this great country to gang of thieves whose sole aim is treasury looting as brazenly displayed in past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administrations.
“An example is a current Senate presiding officer facing EFCC investigations. It is difficult to fathom how a federal lawmaker, who before his current position was an Associate Lecturer and Local Government Chairman, owns 22 high-end properties in Nigeria and other exclusive locations across the world.
“It is our hope that the anti-graft agencies investigating this Senate Presiding officer makes public his and other corruption probe status reports so that Nigerians can know them for who they are.
“Meanwhile, in line with our promise to combat corruption, the fight against graft has been hugely successful and the gains are clear. The bold effort of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to instill probity in our national life has led to the gradual disappearance of the era of impunity.
“Commendably, President Buhari in line with his tough anti-corruption stance recently signed into law the Nigerian arm of the global financial intelligence unit – Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
“We are confident that the new law will boost ongoing efforts to combat money laundering, terrorism financing and check suspicious transactions, especially as we prepare for the 2019 elections.”
