Akpabio
By Harris-Okon Emmanuel
UYO—All Progressives Congress, APC, has advanced reasons why Senator Godswill Akpabio was being attacked by the opposition party, saying that the fear of losing the forthcoming general election was the reason the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, allegedly masterminded the series of attacks on him.
But the PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, Iniobong Ememobong, denied the party’s involvement in the alleged attack.
Ememobong said the PDP was busy campaigning for the next polls than to dwell on the defection of the former Senate Minority Leader, describing his exit from PDP as inconsequential to the fortunes of the party in 2019 polls.
‘’We are preparing for the general election. We have just finished our endorsement rallies in three senatorial districts. We have respect for him and he should also have respect for us,” Ememobong said.
But the APC maintained that sponsoring violent attacks on the senator and any other of its leaders or members in the state would not save PDP from the imminent ‘’tsunami and we wouldn’t condone it.”
In a statement by the Chairman, APC National Youth Caucus, Akwa Ibom Chapter, Obong Iniobong John, while commending the Police for prompt response, said that the security agents should know those to hold responsible should anything happen to any APC leader or operative in the state.
In a separate development, the police in the state, has insisted that there was no attack on Akpabio, saying: “There was no attack on the person or residence of Senator Akpabio, and no one was hurt in the neighbourhood. It was purely an armed robbery incident which was aborted by the timely intervention of the police.”
Odiko MacDon, State Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement, said: “The Command wishes to inform the general public that on 21/08/2018 about 7:20p.m., six armed men on three motorcycles went to GulfSafrin filling station located at IkotNtuen inUkana, not far away from Senator Akpabio’s residence under the pretence of buying fuel. Shortly after, however, they displayed their true criminal intent by dispossessing some customers and fuel attendants of their valuables and cash, shooting sporadically into the air.
“The hoodlums were however, repelled by Policemen on duty. Coincidentally, the senator was having a meeting at his residence about the same time. The gun shots were wrongly presumed by some persons to have been directed at the senator’s house.”
