AdeosunGate: SERAP sues NYSC over Adeosun’s forged ‘exemption certificate’

A civic group has sued the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the ‘exemption certificate’ being used by the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun.
PREMIUM TIMES had exclusively reported how Mrs Adeosun avoided the mandatory youth service upon graduation from the university and instead procured a forged ‘exemption certificate’ contrary to Nigerian laws.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) had earlier made a freedom of information request to the NYSC seeking details of the certificate paraded by Mrs Adeosun.
The civic group has now sued the NYSC when the latter refused to honour the FOI demand.
Read a full statement by SERAP on the suit below.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Sule Kazaure, and the NYSC over “failure to publish specific documents and information on Minister of Finance Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s application for NYSC exemption, and seeking to compel them to explain if Adeosun obtained any Exemption Certificate from the NYSC.”
In the suit number FHC/L/CS/1369/18 filed Tuesday at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, SERAP is seeking “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus directing and/or compelling General Kazaure and the NYSC to urgently provide specific documents and information on Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s application to the NYSC for Exemption and to publish widely including on a dedicated and on the NYSC website, any such information.”
The suit followed SERAP’s Freedom of Information request dated August 2 to Mr Kazaure, giving him seven days to provide “information on specific details and documents on the Exemption Certificate applied for and obtained by Mrs Adeosun; clarify whether the NYSC actually granted her the Exemption Certificate and if it did, the circumstances and the provisions of the NYSC Act under which the Exemption Certificate was granted.”
The suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its counsel, Bamisope Adeyanju, read in part: “Suspicions of obtaining unauthorised certificate involving a senior member of the government if not urgently and satisfactorily addressed would weaken public trust in the government’s oft-expressed commitment to transparency and accountability.”
“By the combined provisions of section 104(1) of the Evidence Act, 2011 and sections 14(2)(b) 14(3) and 19(2) of the Freedom of Information Act, the NYSC, being the public institution in charge of issuing exemption certificates from the compulsory NYSC Programme, and having publicly declared that Mrs. Adeosun applied for exemption, has a duty to provide SERAP with details and documents containing the application for exemption and the exemption certificate itself, if it was granted.”

“Mandamus lies to secure the performance of a public duty in the performance which SERAP has a sufficient legal interest. SERAP has shown that it has demanded the performance of the duty by the NYSC in this case, and that performance has been refused by the Director-General of the NYSC obliged to discharge it.”
“The right of access to information should be subject to a narrow, carefully tailored system of exceptions. Exceptions should apply only where there is a risk of substantial harm to the protected interest and where that harm is greater than the overriding public interest in having access to the information.”
“SERAP requested the NYSC to provide the information within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of the letter. But since the receipt of the letter by the NYSC and up till the filing of this suit, the NYSC has failed, refused and/or neglected to respond to or grant SERAP’s request.”
“This matter is of utmost national importance and public interest, because it borders on allegations of circumvention of the law, brought against a high public officer of Nigeria, who has sworn on oath to uphold the laws of the nation; including the NYSC Act. The grant of this application will help reveal the truth about the authenticity of the Exemption Certificate granted to Mrs Adeosun.”
“By the combined provisions of Sections 1; 2; 3(4); 4; 7(1)&(5); 9; 14(2)(b)&3; 19(2); and 20 of the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, the right of access to information is guaranteed and there is a statutory obligation on the NYSC being a public institution, to proactively keep, organize and maintain all information or records about their operations, personnel, activities and other relevant or related information or records in a manner that facilitates public access to such information or record.”
“The NYSC has no reason whatsoever not to comply with the demands by SERAP. There is compelling public interest in the disclosure of the information sought by SERAP, which concerns whether a high-ranking Minister had circumvented or disobeyed the law. The public interest in this case outweighs any private interest that the NYSC may be protecting. By the provision of Section 20 of the Freedom of Information Act, SERAP is entitled to apply to this Court for a review of the action of the NYSC.”
“Unless the reliefs sought by SERAP are granted, the NYSC will not provide SERAP with the documents and information requested and will continue to be in breach of the Freedom of Information Act.”
“SERAP is entitled as of right to request for or gain access to information, including information on the Exemption allegedly applied for by Mrs Adeosun.”
The suit is seeking the following reliefs:
A declaration that the failure of the respondents to provide the applicant with specific documents and information on Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s application to it for NYSC Exemption is unlawful and amounts to a breach of the Respondents’ responsibility/obligation under the Freedom of Information Act 2011.

An order of mandamus directing and/or compelling the respondents to urgently provide the applicant with specific documents and information on Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s application to it for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Exemption and to publish widely including on a dedicated and on the NYSC website, any such information.
A declaration that the failure of the respondents to provide the applicant with specific documents and information on the following:
i. the procedure under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to “apply” for NYSC Exemption;
ii. ii. whether an authorised official of the NYSC actually issued an Exemption Certificate to Mrs. Kemi Adeosun;
iii. if NYSC did issue the NYSC Exemption Certificate, the circumstances and the provisions of the NYSC Act under which the Exemption Certificate was granted; and to publish widely including on a dedicated website and on the NYSC website, any such information, is unlawful and amounts to a breach of the Respondent’s obligation under the Freedom of Information Act 2011.
An order of mandamus directing and/or compelling the respondents to urgently provide the applicant with specific documents and information on the following:
i. the procedure under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to “apply” for NYSC Exemption;
ii. whether an authorised official of the NYSC actually issued an Exemption Certificate to Mrs. Kemi Adeosun; if NYSC did issue the NYSC Exemption Certificate, the circumstances and the provisions of the NYSC Act under which the Exemption Certificate was granted; and to publish widely including on a dedicated website and on the NYSC website, any such information.
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Why we sealed-off banks, other private firms in Enugu – BIR

The Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) has given insight into why it carried out a distrainment exercise on four banks and two other private firms, located in Enugu metropolis and Nsukka, on Tuesday, after obtaining court orders.
Speaking to newsmen immediately after the exercise, the board’s Director of Back Duty Audit, Mr. Edwin Iyidiobi disclosed that the affected companies were distrained for non-payment of taxes due to the state government, totaling over N200 million.
The business establishments according to him, include Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) Plc; Sterling Bank Plc; Unity Bank Plc; Heritage Bank Ltd; Robertson Nig. Ltd and Paladium Hotels Ltd.
Mr. Iyidiobi further disclosed that the companies were owing the state the following amounts: GTB (N46m); Sterling Bank (72.2m); Unity Bank (N22m); Heritage Bank (53.8m); Robertson Nig. Ltd (3.1m) and Paladium Hotels Ltd (N3m), totaling over N200 million.
The Director stated that the distrainment exercise became imperative “after several failed appeals to these companies that are indebted to us”, adding that “they did not comply with our request and of course being law abiding citizens we had to ask for court’s assistance”.
He maintained that the exercise followed due process and was successful, saying: “We got Court Orders to seal off the affected companies, and distrain them until they pay what they owe the state government”.
Mr. Iyidiobi further explained that the taxes being owed the state government by the affected companies were in form of “unpaid PAYE; under-remitted PAYE; under-remitted Withholding Tax; under-remitted Development Levy and interests and penalties charged on the under-remitted taxes as provided by the law”.
While emphasizing the board’s need to raise sufficient funds for the execution of state government’s development projects, Mr. Iyidiobi therefore, urged the defaulters to comply with their civic responsibilities by paying the outstanding taxes for the overall benefit of the people of the state.

EPL: Mourinho praises two Manchester United players after 2-1 win over Leicester City

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho has singled out two of his players, Luke Shaw and Andreas Pereira for praise after their 2-1 win over Leicester City on Friday.
Mourinho addressed his entire Manchester United squad on Monday after the victory over Leicester City.
It was goals from Paul Pogba and Shaw that ensured United secured the win in their first Premier League game of the season at Old Trafford.
Metro UK reports that after beating Leicester, Mourinho took the opportunity to deliver an upbeat message to his players as a group, and showed praises on Shaw and Pereira.
In his speech to the players, the former Chelsea manager urged them to remember what they are capable of and what they managed to achieve last season.
United failed to win a trophy last season but the Portuguese manager considers last season’s second-place finish behind Manchester City as one of his biggest achievements.
While addressing his men, Mourinho reserved special words of praise for Shaw and Pereira who both impressed in the win over Leicester.
Pereira, who returned from a season-long loan at Valencia, is making a strong case to be a regular in Mourinho’s midfield after his excellent display against Leicester.
Mourinho described the 22-year-old midfielder’s performance against Leicester as “phenomenal.”
Shaw started at left-back with Ashley Young missing all of United’s preparations due to his holiday after England’s World Cup campaign.
The 23-year-old was unhappy with his treatment from Mourinho last season and the United manager even went public with his criticism of the left-back.
But Shaw has started this season brightly and Mourinho recognised the defender’s improvement during a private chat with the players.
Manchester United will be on a trip to Brighton on Sunday.

Why Saraki should be tried for treason – APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, of committing an act bordering on treason by failing to reconvene the National Assembly on Tuesday.
Last week, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, said the National Assembly would cut short its recess today to consider the 2019 election budget.
However, the National Assembly could not be reconvened because no “firm” decision was taken by members of the Assembly on before the Deputy Speaker’s announcement.
Reacting in a statement by its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, the APC accused Saraki of pursuing his selfish interest above national interest.
The statement reads in part: “As Chairman of the 8th National Assembly, Saraki’s decision not to reconvene the National Assembly done with the support of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara further buttresses our position that Saraki is ever ready to pursue his selfish interests over National Interest.
“This is another brazen display of his penchant for abuse of powers and sabotage of government, however the cost and implication.
“While Saraki and his cohorts continue to postpone their doomsday regarding the imminent Senate leadership change, the yet-to-be considered 2019 budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is dangerously delayed.
“Clearly, Saraki’s actions as Senate President now bother on high treason.”

Warning: Ebola Disease May Be Spreading Undetected In Congo's Conflict Zones - WHO Raises Alarm

Ebola disease
According to a NAN report, the World Health Organisation chief Tedros Ghebreyesus on Tuesday in Geneva, revealed that the Ebola virus may be spreading undetected in no-go zones in Congo’s conflicted North Kivu province.
So far, 57 confirmed and suspected cases, including 41 deaths, have became known since late July in this north-eastern region.
Tedros, who visited North Kivu last week, said WHO workers will find it difficult to fight the virus in the so-called “red zones.”

These areas are inaccessible because of the more than 100 armed groups that are mainly fighting over access to mineral resources.
“That environment is really conducive for Ebola to transmit freely,” the WHO director general told a press conference.
“These red zones could be hiding places for Ebola,” he added.
Ghebreyesus warned that the difficult outside access, patients in these zones would find it hard to reach medical help.
The movement of internally displaced people in North Kivu, and the cross-border travel into neighbouring countries such as Uganda further complicate the situation.
Ebola is a highly infectious disease that causes a fever and often leads to massive internal bleeding and death.
Congo’s Health Ministry has started a vaccination campaign that has reached more than 200 health workers and 20 people who have had contact with infected patients since last week, according to the WHO.
The new outbreak became public only days after July 24, when Congo declared its previous Ebola outbreak to be over.
That outbreak killed 33 people starting in May in the western Equator Province.

PDP vows to resist attempt to rig it out in future elections

Abuja – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will, henceforth, resist any attempt to rig it out in future elections, beginning with the Osun governorship election scheduled for September 22.

PDP made the vow in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan on Tuesday in Abuja.
Ologbondiyan said that it had become manifest that the ruling party was interested in rigging elections, saying the PDP would henceforth contend with such in all ramifications and magnitude, to discomfit it in all coming elections.
He said that the PDP had thoroughly reviewed all infractions and vowed to never again allow the use of foul means to usurp power as it was done in the past and merely ask the PDP to go to court.
Ologbondiyan said that the PDP had particularly reviewed the rigging of Edo state governorship election in 2016, the July 14, Ekiti state governorship election and the last Saturday’s elections for senatorial districts in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi federal constituency
by-elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi states.
He said that the review revealed that the PDP won in all the elections but was viciously manipulated out by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The PDP, therefore, resolves that in as much as it remains a law abiding political party, conducting its affairs strictly within the ambit of our nation’s electoral laws; the party will henceforth resist rigging.
“We will henceforth directly and physically confront and resist the election riggers from always having a field day in seizing our democratic institutions and circumventing the rules during elections.
“Consequently, the PDP directs all its state governors, officials at state and zonal chapters, national and state assembly members and all other elected leaders at all levels to get ready to move into Osun state.
“They should go there and provide all support necessary and germane in all the nooks and crannies of Osun state in the forthcoming election.
“Similarly, the PDP directs all its presidential aspirants to move all their political machinery to Osun State within this period, as well as get prepared to physically participate in the election process.
“Our insistence as a party is for a level playing ground, a free, fair and credible electoral process, where all votes will count just as our party provided for General Buhari in 2015, that enabled him to be elected as president.
“However, we will not accept our respect for democratic tenets to be taken as a mark of cowardice or weakness.’’
Ologbondiyan added that the statement was a wake-up call to all lovers of democracy across our nation to rise in this spirit to safeguard the nation’s democracy from all anti-democratic and oppressive forces.

2019: Nigerians have different reasons to vote Buhari – Presidency

The Presidency has expressed optimism that Nigerians will vote massively for President Muhammadu Buhari for different reasons in 2019.
Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina stated this at an event in Ibadan, Oyo State.
He also stated that those criticizing Buhari were those against the current anti-corruption campaign.
Adesina pointed out that Nigerians will vote for Buhari for several issues ranging from his anti-corruption, infrastructural push and the posthumous award to the late politician, M.K.O. Abiola.
He said, “Many of those making unverifiable statements against Mr President are the minority few who do not like the anti-graft battle the President is waging.
“They are few but they are loud, but the greatest shock of their lives is waiting for them in 2019 because Nigerians will vote massively for Buhari.
“Those who will vote will have their reasons. Those who will vote him because of the rail lines he is building around Nigeria will vote him, those who will vote him because he is successfully prosecuting the anti-graft war will vote him, those who will vote for him because he is fair as an administrator will vote for him. For example, his gesture towards late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola’s struggle for recognition. We can go on and on.”

$16B EGINA : WE HAVE LAID FOUNDATION FOR ECONOMIC GROWT- OSINBAJO

THE Acting President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has expressed  satisfaction over the $16 billion Egina Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) project, adding that the economy was ready for more investment. Osinbajo He made this known at a visit to  Total’s Egina  FPSO in LADOL Free Zone, Lagos. He explained that the present administration has laid the foundation for the nation’s economy explaining, “We strongly believe that the Nigerian economy must be private sector lead. This project, for example, is a $16 billion project in naira terms, that is about N5 trillion. “The entire Nigerian budget is about N9 trillion and our spending on infrastructure, which is the largest in the history of Nigeria is N1.5 trillion. So it tells you that this project alone is several times more than the federal government spending on infrastructure. This is the story of developed economies that are private sector driven, as there is no way that government’s revenue can possibly satisfy the demand.” Also speaking, Managing Director, Total Upstream, Nigeria, Mr. Nicolas Terraz, stated that the company would continue to invest in Nigeria’s economy as it had invested over $10 billion in the last five years. Represented by Deputy Managing Director, Deepwater, Mr. Ahmadu-Kida Musa, Terraz explained that Egina, remained the largest investment currently ongoing in the oil and industry, adding, “The project is expected to be completed in the quarter of 2018 within the initial budget of $16 billion. “The Egina FPSO is a newly built spread moored FPSO, and will be connected through subsea production systems to 44 wells consisting of 21 oil producers and 23 water injector wells via umbilicals, flowlines and risers.” “On plans to partner with the government on zero gas flaring,  the project is designed such that there will be no routine gas flaring during normal operation as all the treated gas will be transported through the existing Akpo-Amenam pipeline to the Bonny NLNG plant.” He noted that the project will add 200,000 barrels of oil per day to the production of the country, representing about 10 percent of Nigeria’s current total capacity. While lauding the support received from its partners, Chairman of LADOL, Mr. Ladi Jadesimi, stated that the achievement of the project was a pointer to the growth of local content and capacity of indigenous operators. He said: “LADOL has demonstrated that there are talents in Nigeria and ease of doing business is very much accommodating as well as encouraging. We have grown from how we started in 2001 and have made Nigeria a hub and opportunity for prospective businesses to come in. We will continue to grow our capacity and ensure that more projects are done in Nigeria order than encouraging capital flight.” Re Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/16bn-egina-weve-laid-foundation-for-economic-growth-osinbajo/ Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/16bn-egina-weve-laid-foundation-for-economic-growth-osinbajo/ Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/16bn-egina-weve-laid-foundation-for-economic-growth-osinbajo/ Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/16bn-egina-weve-laid-foundation-for-economic-growth-osinbajo/ Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/16bn-egina-weve-laid-foundation-for-economic-growth-osinbajo/ Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/16bn-egina-weve-laid-foundation-for-economic-growth-osinbajo/

Tension mounts as National Assembly shelves special sitting

National Assembly

• Oshiomhole holds emergency meeting with APC senators
• Akpabio ‘unmoved’ by rumoured displacement
• Lawmakers file suit to stop Saraki’s impeachment
• PDP warns Buhari group over anti-democratic moves
The much-anticipated special sitting of both chambers of the National Assembly to consider the N242 billion 2019 election budget may have been dropped.Although there was no official communication from the senate leadership on the matter, lawmakers who were approached for comments claimed they had not received invitation for any session.
Checks, however, showed that the special sitting was aborted because many lawmakers have traveled for Hajj while others were out of the country on holiday.
After a meeting last Wednesday between the leadership of the National Assembly and the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, it was announced that the chambers might be reconvened to consider the election budget this week. Yakubu had said: “The most important thing is that INEC was invited to meet with the National Assembly leadership on how the proposed budget for the 2019 elections can be speedily considered and appropriated. We have been assured of speedy passage of the budget perhaps as early as next week.”
Senate Minority Whip, Philip Aduda, who was also at the meeting, said: “If need be, we will resume to consider the virement request and pass it. We are agreeing we will fix a date to discuss the budget and ensure approval.”According to a senate source: “The request by President Muhammadu Buhari is not just a single line item that would just require a one-day sitting. It will involve a variety of committees that would work on the budget including the Appropriations, Finance, INEC and other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). This is different from a situation where the President is asking for an increase in the size of the budget through a change of benchmark.”
According to the source, the National Assembly cannot achieve anything, even if it reconvenes for a sitting this week, because the request has to be passed to the committees and the committees have to meet with MDAs.“Besides, there is another issue that has to do with the constituency projects. The letter is requesting the lawmakers to remove funds from their constituency projects and use the same to fund INEC. Remember that the constituency projects are not one-line items in the budget. You can’t imagine how long it would take the appropriations committees to sort out that issue with the MDAs,” another source explained.
Also confirming the development, another lawmaker noted: “Reconvening the National Assembly will not really work. It would mean that you want to keep the lawmakers around for the next one month, which defeats the idea of the annual recess. The letter by the President is not just requesting for an increase in benchmark, which can be handled in one day through Senate or House resolution. Treating the letter by the President will take two to three weeks.”
It was stressed that logistics for securing a quorum at either the Senate or the House was becoming more and more difficult. “Many of our colleagues have travelled for Hajj. Many are in their constituencies battling the challenges of re-election. If you check, even with the APC right now, they can’t get up to 30 senators and next week is Sallah. Arafat is on Monday and you will have holidays. A number of people have travelled. It is not practicable to reconvene now.”
The emergency meeting reportedly convened by the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, for all the party’s senators may not be unconnected with the suspension of the special sitting.Although the agenda of the meeting is yet to be unveiled, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said his party caucus was not perturbed.
Also, yesterday, Senator Godswill Akpabio said he was unmoved by reports that his seat may be declared vacant following his defection from the PDP to the APC. Responding to questions at the National Assembly, the former Senate minority leader said: “Even as you are looking at me, do I look perturbed? The reason I think that is a rumour is because there is, at the moment, no division in the APC. The APC is one family. R-APC has since been consumed in what they call Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). So, there is no division. And so, any defection from APC to PDP, we will like to declare those seats vacant.”
Akpabio also said that he was yet to be briefed about Oshiomhole’s directive to APC senators to impeach Saraki. “I just came in from Ikot-Ekpene where I decided with my people to join APC. I’m yet to be briefed on any of those items. I have not heard anything. And what I am hearing now is what you are telling me,” he said.
Meanwhile, Senators Rafiu Ibrahim Adebayo (Kwara South) and Isa Hamma Misau (Bauchi Central) filed a suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/872/2018) yesterday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, in a bid to stop an alleged plot to impeach the senate president, Bukola Saraki. In the originating summons filed on their behalf by Mahmud Magaji (SAN), the plaintiffs are asking the court to determine whether Saraki can be compelled to vacate his office on the grounds that he is not a member of the political party with majority of senators in the senate, in view of the combined reading of Section 50 of the constitution and Order 3, Rule 8, of the Senate Standing Orders.
The court was equally asked to determine whether Saraki could be said to have vacated his office by virtue of section 50 (2) of the constitution when he has not ceased to be a member of the senate or the chamber dissolved.
No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit. But a human rights lawyer, Frank Tietie, advised that the seat of the senate president should be declared vacant since he (Saraki) has defected to another party. Tietie, in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, also said similar fate should befall Akpabio. He based his call on the provision of Section 68 (1) (G) of the 1999 constitution as amended. He said the section provides that the seat of a senator or a member of the House of Representatives shall be declared vacant if he becomes a member of any other political party before the expiration of the period for which he is elected.
He, however, said there was an exception if there is “a division in the political party to which the senator or representative was previously a member. Tietie said in the absence of this condition, all senators and members of the National Assembly who defected from the party that originally sponsored their elections must have their seats declared vacant. He said INEC must immediately conduct bye-elections to replace the affected lawmakers.
Also, the PDP described as treasonable alleged threat by the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO) to take over the National Assembly, should the APC and the presidency fail in their bid to forcibly change the leadership of the senate. The party, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the threat has further “confirmed the involvement of the presidency and forces associated with Buhari in the invasion of the National Assembly, the besieging of the official residences of Saraki and deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu by security agencies, and plots to arrest, detain and impeach them ahead of the Senate’s resumption.”
It said: “Nigerians can now see, from the threat by the official campaign organisation of Mr. President, that the presidency was economical with the truth in its statement wherein it attempted to dissociate itself from the ugly developments in the senate, which have put our nation’s stability and our democracy under serious stress.”
The party invited Nigerians “to note that the APC has given its official nod to this treasonable threat by BCO to forcefully take over the institution of the National Assembly, an arm of government duly established by our constitution, thereby confirming its complicity in the attacks on the legislature.” The PDP charged security agencies to save the nation’s democracy “by immediately looking into the immediate and remote impetus behind this open threat to our democracy and making their findings public.”

Southwest PDP cautions against arrest of Saraki, Ekweremadu

Party to challenge Bauchi south election result in court
The Southwest chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government against intimidating its leaders, saying any attempt to arrest Senate President Bukola Saraki, will plunge the country into crisis.
Its Chairman, Eddy Olafeso, in a statement yesterday in Akure, accused the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, of insulting elder statesmen like former President Olusegun Obasanjo
“We are aware of a disingenuous plot by the presidency and APC to arrest Saraki and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu over trumped-up charges.“We also note that the APC has become very rabid since Oshiomhole took over as chairman. It has become his regular pastime to insult our leaders and their legacies as if that is his term of reference.
“The PDP wishes to state that Nigeria is our fatherland and not an exclusive preserve of the Presidency and APC. Therefore, the fundamental rights of all Nigerians must not be trampled upon by a privileged few,” the statement reads.
Olafeso particularly stressed Oshiomhole’s constant abuses on Obasanjo, saying his ill-manners continues to rob the ruling party of maturity and decent approach to tackling political issues.“His flippant, loquacious and uncouth language is symptomatic of unfounded aggression and grudges. Failure of the authorities to prosecute actions injurious to our democracy will do great disservice to the country,” he added.
While expressing resentment towards the actions of APC and its leadership, he stated that PDP would no longer condone anybody insulting Obasanjo and other Yoruba leaders, declaring that henceforth, the party was prepared to square up with Oshiomhole if he continues to abuse and assault its leaders.
“Any orchestrated arrest of Saraki and Ekweremadu under any guise whatsoever will be viewed as a continuation of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s intimidation and oppression of the duo for the past three years,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the PDP in Bauchi State has rejected the result of last Saturday’s by-election and has vowed to challenge the outcome in court, alleging mass rigging, voters inducement and disenfranchisement of its members at polling units. While addressing journalists at the PDP secretariat yesterday, state Chairman of the party, Hamza Akuyam, its candidate, Ladan Salihu and other party leaders described the election as the worst in the history of elections in the country.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared APC candidate, Lawal Yahaya Gumau, as winner of the senatorial by-election having polled 119,489 votes to defeat PDP’s Salihu who pooled 50,256.

Defection: What Oyedepo, PDP Chairmen told me about Saraki – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has revealed the outcome of his meeting with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kwara State.
The Minister said that all the three senatorial district chairmen of the PDP in the state gave him confidence that Saraki’s days in dominating Kwara politics are limited.
Mohammed said that he has received support from the State Chairman of the PDP and party leaders in the three senatorial districts in the state.
The Minister said this while fielding questions from reporters in Lagos on the future of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state following the decamping of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and others to the PDP.
Kwara PDP Chairman, Iyiola Oyedepo and members of the party dumped the party for the APC immediately Saraki and others decamped.
Mohammed said, “To answer your question, I think APC can only go stronger in Kwara State because what we are witnessing today is like a liberation, and from the support I have received so far, including the entire leadership of the party, led by the Chairman, Akogun Oyedepo Iyiola, who met with me and the National Chairman with 17 other leaders, including Prof. Oba Abdulraheem, Sen. S.S. Ajibola, all the three senatorial district chairmen of the PDP in the state, gives me confidence that Saraki’s days in dominating Kwara politics are limited.
“What we have today is some members of the APC decamping to the PDP.
“I say some members because many members have refused to go. But we have gained more from those who say rather than stay in the same party with Saraki, they would rather come to the APC.
“As far as the people of Kwara State are concerned, it was as if finally, the state was being liberated.
“The excitement today in Kwara State is akin to how Nigeria felt on the eve of independence.
“I have received and consulted with delegations. As a matter of fact, I am meeting on the 19th of this month if it is convenient for me with about 200 leaders of Kwara PDP, ranging from a former speaker in the Second Republic to community leaders across the state.”
