Barcelona vs Huesca : Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez score doubles

Barcelona vs Huesca : A magical Lionel Messi and in-form Luis Suarez scored doubles apiece as champions Barcelona thrashed newly-promoted Huesca 8-2 to join Real Madrid at the top of La Liga on Sunday.

Barcelona’s third win of the campaign in as many games saw Ernesto Valverde’s men go top thanks to superior goal difference over Real before the break for Nations League matches.
Celta Vigo, who stunned Atletico Madrid 2-0 on Saturday, sit in third place at two points adrift with Atletico now five points adrift of the top after a shaky start to the campaign.
Huesca travelled to the Camp Nou perhaps more in hope than belief, although it was the latter that dominated the Aragaon-based minnows’ thinking in the early stages after Cucho Hernandez headed past Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to hand them a surprise third-minute lead.
But reality soon kicked in, a slick Messi levelling in the 16th minute after leaving right-back Luisinho on the deck on his way to beating Argentine goalkeeper Axel Werner.
Eight minutes later in the Barcelona vs Huesca game VAR was deployed to confirm an own goal from defender Jorge Pulido, who got his foot to Jordi Alba’s cutback before it wriggled past Werner and into the net.
Alba, recently left out of Spain’s squad by former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, was in the thick of it again on 39 minutes when he set up Suarez to put Barca 3-1 in front by the 39th minute with his maiden goal of the campaign.
Although Alex Gallar pulled one back for the visitors three minutes before the interval when he turned in Hernandez’s deflected cross to reduce arrears to 3-2, it merely delayed a second-half onslaught.
Barca emerged from the dressing room in the Barcelona vs Huesca game to hit five goals, in Ousmane Dembele starting the rout with an angled drive that beat Werner on 48 minutes.
Four minutes later Ivan Rakitic’s superb half-volley from Messi’s delivery had the Camp Nou on its feet.
Messi doubled his tally for the night on the hour mark to make it four in three games and completed his night’s work by setting up Jordi Alba for a magnificent seventh nine minutes from the final whistle.
Barcelona made it eight in the final seconds of the game when Suarez stepped up to beat Werner from the spot.
“It’s always important to be top of the league but it’s barely started,” Suarez told beIN Sports.
“The championship is very long and the main thing is to keep on doing as we are.”
Messi’s haul of four goals means he is level with Real striker Karim Benzema, the Argentine star foregoing the opportunity to take the sole lead of the scoring charts when he allowed Suarez to hit the late penalty.
With a question mark still hanging over his international career, Messi is expected to return from the international break rested having decided not to play for Argentina

We will remove Okowa in 2019 – Uduaghan

…Says, I don’t expect Ibori to think I betrayed him

By Perez Brisibe
Immediate past governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, last week, defected from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. He has among others accused the party of not protecting its own even as he dismissed claims that his defection was forced on him on account of alleged investigations of his administration by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan
In this interview, he further asserts that he does not expect his cousin and predecessor in office as governor, Chief James Ibori, to feel betrayed over his defection. The former governor spoke as a guest of Channels Television’s current affairs programme, Hard Copy.
Cold war with Okowa
Let’s not go to the intricacies of 2014. There was no sitting down to say after this, it would be this and that (talking about who becomes governor), no. It wasn’t something that was pre-arranged as it wasn’t planned that I would take over from Ibori and Governor Okowa should take over from me. But it just happened that the three of us emerged just like that. Else, by now, we should have known who the fourth person should be and nobody can mention or say who that person would be.
There was a struggle with 28 contestants in 2007 that went for the primaries and 23 contestants when Governor Okowa was gunning for office.
The 28 of us that contested in 2007 had the chance of becoming the next governor. What happened then was that we had three senatorial districts with Central having it for eight years, we formed a group between the North and South and there was a lot of pressure that it should go to the South. In the South, we organised ourselves into a group called the G3 which was very active and in terms of nomination, we narrowed it to one person which was myself.
In the G3, which consisted of Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko and some Urhobo, who are in South, were able to narrow ourselves. While the others had divided arrangement, we had a single arrangement and that was the big advantage that we had at the PDP primary which led to my success.
Joining tent with long time rival, Ogboru
In politics, there are no permanent friends and if you decide to make permanent enemies or friends, you can never move forward. Politics is about interest. My interest at the moment is what APC has done in the Niger-Delta, which for me, is quite encouraging. It is not my self interest but regional interest.
My defection has nothing to do with primaries
I contested elections severally and did primaries severally. Most of the senators that are there now, I did their primaries and even did very hot elections, so election is not my problem. I have issues in PDP both at the state and the national level and there is no doubt about it.
Investigations by EFCC
I am one of the most investigated former governors. I have gone to the EFCC in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Benin and Abuja, so what other investigations are you talking about? In the last three years, the EFCC has come to Delta State, took the SSG’s office for three days, arrested people, brought Permanent Secretaries and others to Asaba and this has never happened in any state.
If you go to the EFCC, they would tell you that the highest number of petitions is from Delta State. There is virtually nothing that I did in Delta State that has not been investigated, sometimes twice because sometimes two persons write same petition. So what other investigation are you talking about? EFCC has virtually turned Delta State up, down, left, right and centre. It has nothing to do with EFCC investigations.
PDP never protects its own
The PDP has never protected its own. The PDP can use you and whatever happens to you after, nobody cares. People would move from the PDP to the APC because the conditions in APC now favour the development of the Niger-Delta and so we are ready to mobilise people from the PDP in the South-South to APC. Besides, you need to have some people in the APC to be able to push some of the agreements reached by the Buhari government with the people of the region not to start a fresh agreement.
There are a lot of things wrong with the PDP as at today. PDP at the national level is busy dealing with issues at the National Assembly. Is there something really going on with PDP at the national level?
My role in Delta APC
My role is going to be coordinating. The APC in Delta has been very weak. They do not have a House of Assembly member, and they have not won any election even at the council level. So my role is to first of all, unite the members, and let them know that if you do not build a party, you can never win an election. These days, no party is built around an individual.
You have to come together collectively and build the party. So since I came in, I have been going round and talking to the leaders, telling them that, look, we need to build the party from the ward level not from the top and this is my first responsibility.
Expectations of APC in Delta in 2019
We are looking to wrest power from the PDP in the state. I do not have an idea who the candidate of the party is going to be. Every party has its own calculations, sometimes, such calculations look as if the whole state has accepted that calculation, like the Delta North and others which were started by the PDP and I do not know if APC has accepted that as well, as I just came into the party.
But I would go in, study the party, what they have and do not have on the table, and advise, based on my knowledge of Delta State; what would bring peace and what is best for the state.
2019 in Delta State would be much more interesting. APC was not much that strong in 2014. But now, they are stronger. In 2014, I was in PDP, Great Ogboru was in Labour Party, same with Ovie Omo-Agege in Labour Party and Emerhor in APC. But now, all these names I have mentioned are in APC. So definitely, APC would be stronger in 2019 than in 2014.
Keeps mum on Okowa’s administration
If you had asked me two days ago (assessment of Okowa’s administration), I would have answered you but today, I won’t answer because I just entered a new party, I do not want to talk about what he has done and what he has not done, I want to face the party.
Allegation of debt profile by Okowa
He changed his comment later that the handover note I gave to him, he didn’t study it properly because the figures he was talking about were quite different from the figures he quoted later. There was a figure that was quoted as soon as I left, and just this year, it was different.
Ibori’s position on my defection
I do not expect Ibori to say I betrayed him. You must understand that there is an Ibori political family and there is a PDP family. Ibori had a political family that started from the Grassroots Democratic Movement, GDM, and I am a part of that family. So, the family had been on before PDP. That I am in APC does not mean I am not relating with him. I do and this includes the fact that we are blood brothers.
This would not in any way affect my relationship with him. Even while in the same PDP, you do not have to relate with everybody, there were those who wanted me, those who liked me and those who didn’t.
So, being in the same party does not mean relationships would be smooth.

PFN tasks FG, global Christian community on Leah Sharibu’s rescue

Leah Sharibu, one of the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has urged the Federal Government and the global Christian community to ensure the rescue of the abducted Dapchi school girl, Leah Sharibu, from the captivity of Boko Haram terrorists.
The President of PFN, Rev Felix Omobude, who gave the charge said the international Christian community should join in the search and negotiations to ensure that the girl is released without further delay.
Sharibu is the Christian girl who was kidnapped alongside 118 other students of Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe State.
When her colleagues were subsequently released, Sharibu was held back for allegedly refusing to renounce her Christian faith.
In an audio recording message recently, she sent a passionate appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to have pity on her and secure her release.
Omobude, in a statement at the weekend in Benin City, Edo State, called on the government to do all it takes to free the innocent girl.
“The PFN is considerably worried why it’s taking the government such a long time to secure the release of Sharibu. We urge the Buhari-led government to do the needful to reduce the tension her continuous detention against her will, is generating among the Christians in Nigeria and their well-wishers.”
Meanwhile, the Amnesty International (AI) has commended the Federal Government over the trial of suspected Boko Haram terrorists, describing the action as “good progress for the justice sector”.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report, the commendation was contained in a letter addressed to the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), by the Country Director of AI, Osai Ojigho.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement yesterday in Abuja said that a copy of the letter was made available to his office by the AGF.
He quoted the Amnesty International Nigeria as saying that its delegates, who were invited to observe the proceedings at the third phase of the trial at Wawa Military Cantonment, Kainji, New Bussa, Niger State from July 8 to July 11 ”were treated with respect and decorum.”

EPL: Why we defeated Burnley 2-0 – Mourinho

Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho, has revealed why his side were able to beat Burnley in the Premier League match on Sunday.
Two goals from Belgium striker Lukaku gave Manchester United the lead at Turf Moor.
He scored the first with a 27th-minute header and doubled the visitors’ advantage shortly before half-time.
Paul Pogba missed a penalty in the second-half but United did more than enough to earn the three points.
On his team’s performance, Mourinho told Sky Sports, “I think it was a very, very good performance with a result which was short.
“They played very well as a team, and there were very good individual performances and we should score many more goals.
“The result shouldn’t have been open until the last minute.
“We lost so many chances and Joe Hart made important saves.
“I don’t remember such a comfortable performance as we’ve showed in the last two matches.”

Ronaldo scores four goals for Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo’s son during the weekend scored four goals in his debut for Juventus Under-9s, wearing his father’s iconic no. 7 shirt.
It was reported last week that Cristiano Jnr, 8, had joined Juve’s academy side after being on the books at Real Madrid.
Sun reports the youngster was in lethal form as he found the net four times in front of step-mum, Georgina Rodriguez.
Ronaldo had previously revealed his hope that his son would follow in his footsteps and make it as a professional.
The Juventus star told DAZN via SportingNews: “[Cristiano Jnr] is very competitive, he’s like me when I was young.
“He doesn’t like to lose and he will be like me, I’m sure, 100 per cent.
“I like to teach him some stuff, but he’s going to be whatever he wants and I’m always going to support him.
“But of course I want Cristiano to be a football player, because I think he has that drive. He has a good body, he’s fast, he has skills, he shoots good.”

Barcelona hammer Huesca to overtake Real Madrid on LaLiga table

Barcelona put up a show at the Nou Camp on Sunday night, crushing Huesca 8-2, to go top of LaLiga.
Top-flight debutants, Huesca took a shock early lead when Cucho Hernandez deflected the ball in from point-blank range, but Lionel Messi levelled in the 16th minute.
An own goal from Jorge Pulido gave Barca the lead and Luis Suarez scored for the first time in five games in all competitions to extend their advantage, although Huesca’s Alex Gallar pulled one back before halftime to make it 3-2.
Any hope of a revival from the visitors was soon killed off by three Barca goals in 11 minutes from Ousmane Dembele, Ivan Rakitic and Messi while Jordi Alba capped a brilliant performance to score and Suarez added goal number eight from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
Barca join Real Madrid as the only teams in the league to win their opening three games, but are ahead with a superior goal difference.

Over 20,000 children forced out of school by herdsmen crisis in Benue—SUBEB boss

…Over 18,000 children now in IDPs camps
By Peter Duru
MAKURDI—CHAIRMAN of Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Rev. Philip Tachin, has said that over 20,000 primary school children have been forced out of school in the state since the beginning of 2018 as a result of the incursions of armed militant herdsmen in several communities.
He explained that of the number, close to 18,000 were taking refuge in various Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps established by the state government to cater for the needs of  victims of the crisis.
herdsmen
Tachin made the disclosure at the weekend shortly after he led members of the board’s management team on an inspection of completed and ongoing primary school projects constructed under the Benue State government and the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, intervention fund.
He said:  “The renewed herdsmen attacks in 2018 also led to the complete destruction of structures in over 50 public primary schools in the affected areas and communities of the state.
“The development is quite a huge challenge for the state government, given the amount of resources that would be required to rebuild the affected structures.”
After inspecting the Local Government Education Authority, LGEA, primary schools at Gbajimba and Mbabegha in Guma Local Government Area, as well as St. Theresa’s Primary School in Makurdi, Tachin disclosed that aside from the initial 740, more primary schools had been slated for rehabilitation before the end of Governor Samuel Ortom’s first tenure.
He said:  “From available records and our findings, of the 740 projects 426 have been completed while 229 were still under construction and rehabilitation while 79 of the projects have been terminated.”
According to him, the board also procured thousands of modern plastic seats, tables, computers and other learning aids using the counterpart funds.

How my troubles began, by Sylva

Former governor of Bayelsa State and All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain, Mr Timipre Sylva, has said that his problems began after the demise of ex-president Umar  Yar’Adua.
Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State
Yar’Adua was elected in 2007 but died in May 2010. Goodluck Jonathan, his vice-president at the time, replaced him as president.
Sylva, while speaking at an event,  Frank Talk with Timipre Sylva,  weekend in Abuja, said  “As governor of Bayelsa, State, I had running battles till the day I got in with the Jonathan system because I did not come through the Jonathan succession plan.
“He wanted a different succession plan. I came in without him being in control and ended up as governor, so as vice-president, he started fighting me and that was how my election was annulled in 2008 and I went back for re-election. Of course, Yar’adua at that time as president protected me because he saw the good work I was doing.”

Osun guber: How Obasanjo convinced me to dump PDP – Akinbade

The flag bearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the September 22 governorship poll in Osun State, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, has revealed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, convinced him to pick the party’s ticket.
Akinbade, who said he would not blame anybody for his resolve to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this disclosure while answering questions during an interactive session, held inside the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council in Osogbo.
“We were in the Labour Party (LP) sometimes last year. There were having issues with a caretaker committee of the PDP in Osun. Both two factions came to beg me. I consulted with my people and we all decided to go back to PDP. You knew what happened during the primaries in July. Some of them said it to my face that Akinbade is a good candidate, but he has no money.”
According to Akinbade, “On July 1, 2018, I had a call from Obasanjo who told me that are you aware that you will not be picked after the conclusion of the PDP primaries. He said I should go and resign my membership of PDP and pick the ticket of ADC. I said it would not be possible. Then, he said I was heady, saying ADC would not pick a defeated gubernatorial aspirant.
“A month to the PDP primaries, Oyinlola called me asking how many people are in my camp. I said I am not camping anybody. He said he knew how many delegates each governorship aspirants in the PDP had camped. He said he called me because the party had relaxed its stand of not picking defeated aspirants.”

What APC gained after Saraki, others defected to PDP – Lai Mohammed

By  -  - [ Update ]

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has gained more members after Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his loyalists defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Minister stated this on Sunday when he appeared as guest on a Nigeria Television Authority programme, “Stepping Up”.
Mohammed said he and his party were not bothered about the gale of defection to the PDP in his home state, Kwara.
His words: “Yes, we lost some people who left with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, like the state governor and 23 of the 24 members of House of Assembly.
“But the good news is that APC had gained massively. Many PDP members who could not stand in the same party with Saraki are defecting to APC.
“The most important thing is that the people of Kwara are very much with us and I am confident that come 2019, we will win massively in Kwara State”.

Maiduguri airport mutiny: Army captain, 70 others detained for trial

…Army moves suspects to 2 locations

…Why troops defied COAS’ order
…Soldiers’ action unacceptable — Buratai
…Trial of Boko Haram suspects, good progress for justice sector — AI
By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor
ABUJA— Angered by the mutiny by officers and men of Nigerian Army at Maiduguri Airport two weeks ago, the military high command has arrested and detained a captain and no fewer than 70 others for the embarrassing action, which is against military rules of engagement.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, with AK47 rifle, aims at a target during shooting competition
This is even as Amnesty International, yesterday, commended the Federal Government over the trial of suspected Boko Haram terrorists, describing the ongoing trial as “good progress for the justice sector.”
The captain (names withheld) led others who refused to be redeployed to Gamboru Ngala, a border town in Borno State with Niger Republic, which is known as the stronghold of Boko Haram insurgents.
The arrest and detention of the suspects, according to competent military sources, followed the order by Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai, that the suspects be arrested and subjected to severe military disciplinary action.
Vanguard learned that following the directive by the COAS, the suspects had since been moved into two unknown locations in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, with a view to subjecting them to a court martial.
Why troops defied COAS’ order
According to competent sources, the suspects rejected their posting to Gamboru Ngala because of war fatigue as most of them had been fighting Boko Haram insurgents for years without rotation.
It was gathered that the soldiers particularly loathed the idea of being sent to the warfront, given the fact that many of their colleagues who were earlier sent there were either killed or badly injured and their equipment taken away by the rampaging insurgents due to bad weather and insufficient platforms.
The sources said: “We became afraid when we discovered that no fewer than 30 soldiers who were sent there were killed within three days due to the heavy rainfall, which has further worsened the terrain mastered by the insurgents.
“We do not know why the Nigerian Army suddenly changed its mind and decided to deploy troops to the dreaded area after it had announced that it had pulled out of Gamboru, where Boko Haram appears be operating from after being pushed away from the Sambisa Forest.”
Soldiers’ action unacceptable— Buratai
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Yusuf Buratai, yesterday, described the action of the soldiers as strange and unacceptable.
Speaking for the first time since the incident in Maiduguri two weeks ago, Buratai said: “The incident at the Maiduguri airport that happened just about two weeks ago is an issue, which ordinarily is unimaginable, that disciplined troops, soldiers will behave in that way.
“But we have our procedures and this issue has been thoroughly investigated and those that have been found to be involved will face military justice. This sort of affairs will never be tolerated no matter the person or persons involved.”
Trial of Boko Haram suspects, good progress for justice sector — AI
Meanwhile, Amnesty International, AI, has commended the Federal Government over the trial of suspected Boko Haram terrorists, describing the ongoing trial as “good progress for the justice sector.”
The commendation was contained in a letter addressed to Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, by Osai Ojigho, Country Director, Amnesty International Nigeria.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement, yesterday, in Abuja said a copy of the letter was made available to his office by the AGF.
The minister said Amnesty International Nigeria said its delegates, who were invited to observe the proceedings at the third phase of the trial at Wawa Military Cantonment, Kainji, New Bussa, Niger State, from July 8 to July 11, “were treated with respect and decorum.”
Commenting on the letter, Malami said it was a “clear demonstration of the strategic role of the Federal Ministry of Justice and its commitment in adjudicating terrorism cases, implementing the Criminal Justice Act, and promoting the rule of law and human rights.”

APC vs PDP: How Amaechi, Rivers guber aspirants ‘agreed’ on Tonye Cole – Princewill

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Princewill has confirmed that Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, and other party leaders in Rivers have agreed that businessman, Tonye Cole, should get the party’s 2019 governorship ticket.
Amaechi in a statement at the weekend said he had the right to support any candidate.
The former Rivers Governor was said to have announced Cole at a meeting held in Lagos before flying out to China, ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s trip.
Amaechi reportedly picked Cole, ahead of other aspirants, including Senator Magnus Abe, Chief Dumo-Lulu Briggs, Director General of NIMASA, Dakuku Peterside and former Senior Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Bekingbo Dagogo-Jack.
At the meeting were Senator Andrew Uchendu, Senator Osi Ideozor, former Executive Director of NDDC, Henry Ogiri Peterside and Princewill.
Others were Lulu-Briggs, former Commissioner for Transport in Rivers state, George Tolofari, Sekonte Davies, Azubike Wanjoku among others.
Reacting, Princewill, in a Facebook post titled “Choice of Tonye Cole – Matters Arising”, shared details of how Cole emerged.
It read in part: “Being one of the few privileged to be in the room when the decision was taken, one would have expected me to speak a little sooner. After all, I have been known to shoot from the hip, speak my mind plus my thoughts on the decision were pretty clear, right from the moment it was made.
“I had repeatedly told my supporters and my associates, that my role in this process was to be a facilitator, to help the leader and his leaders achieve victory in 2019. I joined the APC to help ease Wike out of government house, not to run for the position of Governor.
“I was a witness to at least two caucus meetings chaired by HE Amaechi on the issue and several one on one meetings that spanned many months. Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs and Dr. Dakuku Peterside had put up a good case for their consideration, Engr. Bekinbo Dagogo Jack had also made himself available and to be honest, either of them could have done us proud if given the chance. But alas they weren’t. Amaechi’s preference, our preference rested on the shoulders of Tonye Cole.
“I say our preference because, it was not imposed on us. We all agreed. “Amaechi leads, We follow”. Not only when it suits us. It was not dependent on how he leads, neither was it dependent on where he leads. This was hard for me to swallow because I am used to being my own boss, being The Candidate, but I opted to be a team player by choice. So my word to my team is my bond. Good leaders must also be good followers.
“So Tonye Cole is my choice and I urge us all to support him. Why? Because it’s either him or Wike, he has a track record of success, not failure. He puts his friends above profits, he’s not materialistic and he represents a total departure from the status quo or business as usual. Let’s actually try something truly new. We may get different results.”

CBN returns N65bn excess charges in 7 years

…CIBN implores BCAN to advocate for service charters

•…Expert cautions on banking relationship with minors
By Elizabeth Adegbesan
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, said it has returned to N65 billion excess charges deducted from bank customers’ account in 7 years.
Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele
Meanwhile, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) has called on the Bank Customers Association of Nigeria (BCAN) to demand service charter from banks which would guide members of the public  when applying for bank services.
Speaking in Lagos  at the BCAN  organised  3rd biennial bank customers summit titled: “ Rights and Obligations of Bank customers”, Acting Director Consumer Protection Department, CBN  Mr. T.Y Ahmed said: “Between 2012 and July 2018 we have returned over N65 billion and I can tell you some customers and I mean individuals has got as much as N3 billion.
“ I hope you are aware that for now your complaint shouldn’t be more than six years old. Why are we saying not more than six years old is to look at other relevant status. We have the Anti money laundering Act, we have the Evidence Act.”
Speaking on customers rights and obligations on loans and advances, Council CIBN,  Mrs. Yvonne Isichie, said: “There should be service charters so that when you go in you know what you are asking for and then you should know the standards,  to now define what your expectation would be.
“So we are imploring you to take it up so that by the next two years we would see something good.”
President BCAN, Dr. Uju Ogubunka in his response, assured Isichie, saying “Let me confirm that we would do just that. We will start by requesting all  banks to submit their charters and if they don’t have any, we will expect them to submit one. We will not stop at that. When we get theses charters if we do and hope we may.  We will subject them to scrutiny to confirm that the contents would satisfy the needs of bank customers”.
On his part, Dean, Caleb University, Mr. Segun Ajibola stressed the need for a good banker- customer relationship while highlighting the dangers of  involving minors in banking relationship and operations
He said: “At times we have this confusion. We know that a bank is regulated by law. CIBN Act 2007, Banks and Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) Act 2005  and so many others define what constitute a bank. There is one problem with what constitute a banker. Within the banking hall you enter there are bankers and there are bank workers, so you run into problems when you rely on bank workers. Somebody who has not been trained in arts and science of banking pretending to be a banker, searching the interest of customers and most problems we have today even when they are least to little  come out of fair ignorance on the part of those who should know but they don’t know.
“We must remember in an environment like ours where so many things are being redefined it is a  quite note of a bank contract that you must attain the age of majority. Therefore in Nigeria today anybody that is below the age of 18 cannot valuably hold a bank account. Then you will ask me, we all open accounts for our children in school. Banks go round now to say children account, this account, that account. You know the law is so dormant that is why we say the law is a horse. Nobody will raise any issue but let there be a problem. That child cannot sue that bank because any account that is opened below the age of 18 is not recognized in law.
“If anything goes wrong that bank cannot sue that child. The juvenile court system in Nigeria is still on a confused state so when the bank is opening accounts with school children and so on and so forth and there are problems. Beware.
“ What of those that even come to the bank environment and they say I am here for an Industry Attachment (IT). One IT staff collected money from the strong room one day and he jumped the fence with N50 million. Everybody was working in the banking hall, the guy was on the run. By the time everybody discovered that this guy, age of 17 had disappeared from the banking hall, they were looking for the guarantor but maybe the guarantor is, with due respect a driver, maybe his mother is a petty trader, maybe the brother that signed the form for him maybe he is an applicant. What kind of relationship do we go into with the minors?
“What are the issues as at today? Banking is a conservative profession reserved only for noble men given its origin which we know through the consulate of 18the century that were off proven integrity and the conservative posture of banking agree with us on law. Then suddenly, the rule changed where banking licences were regulated and made available to the highest bidder. A line of demarcation was then drawn between professional banking and entrepreneurial banking contrary to the whole order”, he said.

Barcelona vs Huesca : It’s always important to be top of the league but – Suarez

Barcelona vs Huesca : A magical Lionel Messi and on-form Luis Suarez scored doubles apiece as champions Barcelona thrashed newly-promoted Huesca 8-2 to join Real Madrid at the top of La Liga on Sunday.

Suarez
Eight minutes later VAR was deployed to confirm an own goal from defender Jorge Pulido, who got his foot to Jordi Alba’s cutback before it wriggled past Werner and into the net.
– Level with Benzema –
Barca emerged from the dressing room to hit five goals, Ousmane Dembele starting the rout with an angled drive that beat Werner on 48 minutes.
With a question mark still hanging over his international career, Messi is expected to return from the international break rested having decided not to play for Argentina during the international break.

…They should be ignored – APC Chairman

Senate President Bukola Saraki
But in a swift reaction, the State Chairman of APC, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu Eze urged the public to ignore the group.
The youths under the aegis of Ohanivo Youth Forum, OYF, comprising Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo local government areas of the state, further passed a vote of no confidence on the Senator for non performance and display of characters unbecoming of public officer.
In a communiqué signed by Ohanivo headed by its President, Comrade Raymond Okoro and others, the group said: “We call on the National Assembly leadership led by His Excellency, Dr. Bukola Saraki to declare the seat of Ebonyi South senatorial zone in the senate vacant. We gave him our mandate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and when he decamped to APC, he never consulted his constituents and did not follow the required condition as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before defecting to the APC
“The constitution stipulates that you can only defect from one party to another only when your party is in crisis or there is a faction in your party, which makes it impossible for you to function effectively in your party. To the best our knowledge, there is no faction in PDP.
Reacting on behalf of the APC, Eze said: “The youths should not be given any attention and should be ignored. They can quote any section of the constitution of their choice to buttress their point.  I don’t want to waste my time on frivolous things.”

Trump Threatens To Exclude Canada From New NAFTA Deal

US President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to exclude Canada from a new NAFTA agreement after negotiations to rewrite the pact ended without an agreement the night before.
“There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don’t make a fair deal for the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out,” he tweeted.
“Congress should not interfere with these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off.”
US-Canadian trade talks are set to resume on Wednesday, and Ottawa and Washington still have time to reach an agreement that would keep Canada in the 25-year-old trade pact with Mexico.
But Trump’s tweet seemed designed to ramp up pressure on Canadian negotiators.
Earlier in the week, officials appeared close to reaching a deal that would rewrite the North American Free Trade Agreement but leaked inflammatory comments from Trump — seen by some Canadians as suggesting he was bargaining in bad faith — threatened to upend the talks.
Trump has repeatedly denounced NAFTA as “one of the worst trade deals ever made,” language he repeated on Saturday.

 ‘If it is willing’

The US and Mexico had announced a breakthrough accord on Monday, potentially leaving Canada out in the cold, but Ottawa’s foreign minister Chrystia Freeland insisted that a “win-win-win” agreement was within reach.
The White House notified Congress on Friday of its “intent to sign a trade agreement with Mexico — and Canada if it is willing — 90 days from now.”
The White House now has 30 days to present the full text of a new agreement to Congress, which will give Ottawa and Washington time to iron out differences.
Trump’s caution to Congress to “not interfere with these negotiations” appeared to refer to one potential obstacle: the fact that lawmakers have empowered him to reach a so-called “fast track” agreement with both NAFTA partners, not just Mexico.
It is unclear how that will be sorted out.
In a second tweet Saturday, Trump suggested that the United States would be better off with no trade agreement than with a flawed NAFTA deal.
“We were far better off before NAFTA… We make new deal or go back to pre-NAFTA!” he said.
Sounding a more optimistic note, Freeland had said late in the week that “with good will and flexibility on all sides, I know we can get there.”
But she repeated that Canada would only sign an agreement that was in its national interest.
“Our officials are continuing to work toward agreement,” US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement, stressing the benefits to US workers and businesses.
The US-Mexico agreement laid out new rules for auto trade, and provided tougher protections for workers and intellectual property.
But the talks with Canada snagged over the mechanisms used to resolve disputes among partners, and on Ottawa’s strictly controlled dairy sector.
On Friday, a senior US official emphasized that Washington was ready to move ahead with just Mexico if Canada failed to sign on.
Mexican officials have made clear that they prefer an agreement that includes Canada.

I’m Not Afraid Of Free, Fair Elections In 2019 – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the 2019 polls, under his watch, are free, fair and credible.
While addressing a gathering of Nigerians on Sunday in Beijing, the President said that as a beneficiary of free and fair elections, he is not afraid of a credible process in 2019.
He also stated that Nigerians eligible to vote in the general elections will be allowed to freely elect candidates of their choice.
‘‘I have no fear about free and fair elections because that is what brought me to the present position. I know what I went through and very few Nigerians could boast of trying four times [contesting for the presidency.
‘‘Those interested in participating in the elections must get their PVCs, register in their constituency and elect anybody of their choice across ethnicity and religion.
‘‘The Nigerian police, law enforcement agencies and INEC must respect the people to express their wishes,’’ he was quoted as saying in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
Citing recent elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi States, the President said the country had made progress compared to elections conducted in the past years.
On security issues, he stated that his government has succeeded in curtailing Boko Haram insurgents in the country, adding that the terrorist group no longer controls any part of the country.
He attributed the success to operations of security agencies deployed to counter-insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country.
Speaking about the Nigeria-China relations, the President applauded China’s generosity and contribution to the development of Nigeria, citing the successful completion of the Abuja-Kaduna railway line, built by the Chinese, and ongoing works on Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Abuja, Kano railway routes.

Greener Pastures

He said Nigeria and China are also negotiating on the Mambilla project.
President Buhari also addressed the issue of migration for “greener pastures”.
He advised Nigerians planning to travel abroad for ‘‘greener pastures’’ to do so legitimately and not to expect too much from their countries of destination.
‘‘You cannot seek greener pastures in a place where you are not respected because of the colour of your skin or your lack of education or other things. Personally, I think you will earn more respect when you remain at home and get a job,’’ he said.
