Forget crowd, North is still real battleground

APC leader, Adams Oshiomole
The setting has never been like what is about to unfold next year regarding the presidential poll.
There is every tendency that all calculations about the outcome would end up as big miscalculations.
None of the two major political groupings, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could boast that it is standing on solid ground anywhere.
By-elections have been held and the incumbent has also visited some states.
Nonetheless, until standard bearers of the parties emerge, those parameters do not stand out, as reliable considerations to mirror how next year’s election would go. Both APC and PDP are still struggling for air.
APC grappling with emerging realities
Regardless of how the party’s leadership perceives the recent staccato defections from its base, the APC is facing the internal contradictions that defined its formative steps.
It is hard to conclude that the party has been purged of all vestiges of the nPDP within its fold.
Even at that, it does not seem that those remaining in the party would not be tempted to move on.
Part of the challenges facing APC is how to handle the intricate issue of direct primary as method of selecting its candidates.
While the first term state governors are uniting to rebuff that lofty democratic method, members of the National Assembly, particularly Senators, insist that what is good for the governors, is also be sauce to them.
It is this intricate connection between the assurances of automatic tickets to the Senators that the party seems to have things a bit testy in its desire to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki from the exalted office as first among equals.
To understand the matter, one needs to recognize that the national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, shot himself on the foot by his enthusiasm for the direct primary system, which does not offer him enough leg room to navigate a favourable bend through the demands of the Senators and his pet project of Saraki-Must-Go.
Worse still, some insiders in the Presidency have been using the direct option as a new weapon of blackmail against former Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu.
They accuse the President of falling for the bait that put absolute control of the party structure out of his hand to be shared between Tinubu and his old time benefactor, Oshiomhole.
Would President Buhari be subjected to the rigours of a presidential primary and thereby made to ingratiate himself to Tinubu?
The booby trap in direct primary is its negation of automatic access and right of first refusal.
But, knowing how such things go, the grandstanding might end up creating opportunity for the party big men to access easy money and for the automatic delegates to earn some free income to prosecute their own primary selection process.
The President has been tested with the National Assembly imbroglio and found to be “up and doing” for his second term aspiration.
But the other side of the snag is the electoral environment in the north is not looking so good for Buhari.
Upshots from other northern candidate
UNLIKE in 2003 and 2011 when he contested against Presidential incumbents from the South, in 2019 President Buhari would be up in electoral battle against three formidable northern candidates.
As such, despite the massive crowds that greeted his recent visits to some states in the region, the President may likely witness a similar scenario to what happened in 2007 between him and his late kinsman, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The implication of other presidential candidates appearing on the ballot alongside President Buhari is that of vote split.
It is this possibility of vote split that makes next year’s poll dicey for the President, because unlike when he contested against a Southern candidate, particularly in 2015 when the clamour for return of power to the north was at its peak; he would be subjected to thorough background checks.
In the first place the poll has already been programmed as a referendum on Buhari’s first term.
Although the prosecution of the fight against insurgency has remained a subject of debate, the insecurity in the country, defined by the killer herdsmen the President claimed are mercenaries from Libya, deflates Buhari’s argument.
The performance of the President on the job has been a subject of undulating public debate, with most commentators saying that the President performed below average.
Observers also noted that the fact of the large number of presidential aspirants that have indicated interest in the presidency underlines the approval rating of the President and his performance.
However, there is also concern being raised about the President’s state of health.
While most northern politicians refuse to acknowledge the fact publicly, they are apprehensive over Buhari’s ability to grapple with the rigours of leading a multiethnic nation like Nigeria with myriad of socio-economic and political challenges.
The apprehension over the President’s vitality was said to have informed recent statement by some northern youths in which they warned the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu that he should not arrogate to himself the power to determine for the zone, who should be the President.
National president of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Yerima Shettima, disclosed, “the north would resist the antics of some political figures in the Southwest to determine, like it successfully did in 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari was imposed as candidate of the region despite better options.
The group noted that although the national consensus is that power should remain in the north in 2019, leaders from the zone have decided that no one “should dare try to teleguide the region and its people this time around.
Northerners have a right to their democratic aspirations and choice of a president.”
Next to the concerns about performance and vibrancy is the issue of age.
Political stakeholders are also said to be factoring age into the search of the next president that would also be acceptable to the South.
That could be why some presidential aspirants on the platform of PDP have been touting their age as a positive consideration.
For instance, while supporters of the former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki maintain that Turaki “has age and dynamism on his side, being neither old nor too young for the onerous task of President,” former national caretaker chairman of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said in addition to age, experience is also on his side.
“My experience as a member of the Senate committee on finance for eight years is also an advantage,” he declared.
The opposition PDP have been considering the new breed for the exalted position, a development that brought the likes of Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Senator Bukola Saraki into reckoning.
Middle Belt revolt
BUT, one major disturbing factor in the northern calculations for next year’s presidential poll is the attempt by the Middle Belt zone to seek separate political destiny.
At no time has the northern solidarity and hegemony been more challenged than now.
And majority of northern politicians blame Buhari for adopting positions that erode not only northern solidarity, but also deep-seated animosities among the constituent parts of the region.
Despite the fact that Kano gave the President the winning votes in 2015, the people complain that he did not reciprocate their effort, stressing that even when the late Maitama Sule died, the President did not bother to pay condolence.
But, signs that Kano people were holding some grudges against Buhari for the coldness towards Dan Masanin Kano emerged when the President visited the ancient city and summoned the family to the Government House.
Also, doubts persist that President Buhari would return much votes in Kano because most of those that voted for him in 2015 feel that the President did not step in to do what was expected of a leader to unite two former allies, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Senator Kwankwaso, “when they started manifesting some political misbehavior” that gradually dovetailed to estrangement.
It is also being counted against the President in his home state, Katsina, that since he mounted the saddle as President, not one borehole was constructed for the people.
Most people in the state claim that if not for the fact that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has a governor in Katsina, it would have been hard for the President to draw massive home crowds when he visits.
As the political parties move into the hot primary season, it would begin to show that indeed the real battle for the presidency is in the north, particularly across party lines. Would Buhari pick the ticket if he goes for direct primary?
The presidential primary would indicate which group was right, between those that wanted tenure elongation for Chief John Odigie Oyegun as chairman and those that opposed it.
As such, apart from Governor Nasir el Rufai, which other insiders could influence the turn of events in APC to Buhari’s favour if democracy triumphs?
The situation right now is that the incumbent remains the presumptive APC presidential stand bearer.
That being the case, if the north has rejected Buhari it would only become obvious when rival candidates emerge.

Outrage trails Buhari’s stance on rule of law

[File] President Muhammadu Buhari. PHOTO/TWITTER/APCng
Legal practitioners and rights activists have faulted a speech by President Muhammadu Buhari where he stated that national interest should have preeminence over the rule of law.
“Where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society,” Buhari said in Abuja on Sunday, while opening the 59th annual general conference of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).
But human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, described the speech as a setback for democracy and national development.
In a speech at the ongoing conference, he said national security has neither definition nor limit. “It is amorphous and panders to individual discretion.
It is the rule of the executive arm of government alone, being the one responsible for policy implementation and the determination of security imperatives.
“It is the rule and decision of individuals such as the inspector-general of police or the commander-in-chief.
Such rules are always subject to manifest abuses, especially in respect of opposition politics. That has been the experience in Nigeria.
On the other hand, the rule of law is defined, basic, predictable and even subject to review. It helps to predict and govern human conduct.”
He added: “Whereas we all support the president in the fight against corruption and terrorism, it is still necessary to allow the rule of law to have the pride of place in all spheres of governance.
It was under national security, for instance, that I was kept in custody from November 2007 till July 2008, without trial at all.”
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Prof. Epiphany Azinge, said: “The rule of law cannot be subject to national interest.
It is rather predicated on the supremacy of law. There is no other norm or authority higher than the rule of law.”
Also, Sebastian Hon (SAN) said: “Those who say the judiciary is the last hope of the common man are not far from the truth.
Anything less than this will amount to taking a leap into the bottomless and eternally regrettable abyss of dictatorship.”
Stressing that the rule of law is supreme, a former secretary general of the NBA, Nimi Walson-Jack, said: “That is why even when you declare a state of emergency in a state, which is a component part of the federation, you must go to the National Assembly for its ratification because it involves the suspension of rights in the constitution. If the National Assembly says no, you cannot have a state of emergency.”
Another legal luminary, Ledum Mitee, argued: “The rule of law is also the protection of national security because you are protecting the nationals.
The nation is not just a geographical entity; it is the people that live in the nation that make it a nation.
Most of the time, national security is projected in a manner that threatens the security of the nationals. That cannot be national security.
In fact, the rule of law itself should be an element of national security.”
Rights activist, Ifeanyi Okonkwo, said: “The president did not write that speech. A very ignorant person who wanted to please him did.
The rule of law cannot take the back seat. The president is turning the law upside down.
The rule of law is paramount in democracy. It determines what national security is.”
According to Col. Tony Nyiam (rtd), a delegate at the 2014 national conference, Buhari’s statement, coming few months to a general election, could indicate he (Buhari) is not counting on a free and fair process to win the polls.
It was unexpected of a democratically elected president to make such a tyrannical statement, he said.
The Spokesman for the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, on his part, said the speech is a wake-up call to Nigerians to rise against tyranny.
“Nigeria’s national interest is stipulated and guaranteed in the rule of law.
But from Mr. President’s statement, it appears national interest is subject to his whimsical interpretation. Nigerians need to be careful.
The statement is enough to determine where we should direct our votes in the next general election, otherwise the country would be subjected to full-blown dictatorship,” he said.
In the same vein, the national president of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Yerima Shetima, explained: “National interest itself is built on the rule of law.
Therefore, if the structure now overrides its foundation, definitely there would be crisis.
What President Buhari said was a direct invitation to anarchy. Nigerians never voted him in to undermine rule of law.”
For Dr. Kunle Olajide, the secretary general of the Yoruba Council of Elders, Buhari must understand the fact that nothing takes precedence over the rule of law under a democratic government, “not even national interest.”
In a statement, yesterday, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said: “It is instructive to note that contrary to claims by Mr. President, there is no pronouncement by the Supreme Court that subjugates constitutional rule of law and rights of citizens to the whims, caprices and dictatorial impulses of any president.”
It claimed: “President Buhari is apprehensive of the electoral defeat that awaits him in February 2019 for which he is seeking ways to subvert the system.
But we caution that in this desperation to hold on to power, he must not seek to again subvert our constitutional order, as he will be firmly resisted by Nigerians.”
A legal practitioner, Mudi Erhenede, however, said the president was in order.
“It’s like that all over the world. Where it has to do with national interest and security, the public good should override individual interest.”
Also, a former minister of information and legal practitioner, Tony Momoh, noted that the argument depends on the interpretation of what Buhari meant by national interest.
He said: “I must emphasise the fact that it is not the judiciary that determines what national interest is but the media. It depends on how we interpret what the president was trying to say.”

In the first major upset of the on-going U.S Open Tennis Championship, Kaia Kanepi of Estonia defeated the top seeded Simona Halep of Romania 6/2, 6/4 in the newly rebuilt Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The world number one player held the first game with some difficulty. Kanepi delivered hard serves and powerful ground strokes to level 1-1.
The Estonian then reeled off four straight games to lead 5-1. Halep battled and held serve to reduce the tally 2-5.
Serving for the set, Kanepi won the first point on a service return error.
Two groundstroke winners earned her three set points and she clinched it with a forehand winner off a short service return.
In the first game of the second set, Halep faced break point at 30-40 and deuced. It was but a short reprieve as she lost advantage point and game.
After losing the first point of the second game, Halep went to her corner to change racket and received a time warning.
With three game points, Kanepi delivered a hard serve wide and followed with a forehand down the line winner. She was up two games to love.
Halep was ahead 30-0 but lost four straight points to drop the third game.
Kanepi lost the first point in the fourth game but pushed Halep from side to side and elicited a backhand error. Halep lost two pints and faced two break points before losing the game on a double fault.
In the fifth game, a missed drop shot attempt by Kanepi gave Halep 30-15 on her serve and she won the game on a forehand winner into an empty court.
The Estonian had 40-30 but netted a forehand to deuce. However, a deft volley was beyond Halep’s attempted pick-up.

FAO distributes 40, 400 goats to IDPs, vaccinates 300, 000 animals in N’East

…launches Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS)
By Gabriel Ewepu
ABUJA- THE Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO, Monday, disclosed that 40, 400 goats were distributed to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs and  300, 000 animals of 80, 000 people in North-East region of Nigeria were vaccinated.
This was made known by the FAO Representative, Nigeria, Suffyan Koroma, in a welcome address at the opening ceremony of the Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) 5-day workshop.
Koroma who was represented by the Assistant FAO Representative, Progamme, Ahmed Matane, said the essence of the training was part of the launch of LEGS in Nigeria was to educate stakeholders through training, and were expected to undertake similar training and lessons learnt on new and innovative and strategies back to their institutions and communities, and also promised to support them.
According to him LEGS represents set of guidelines and support services used globally to ensure high standards in livestock-based emergency responses, and would assist livestock experts to design, implement and assess interventions for livestock-owning households and communities, which LEGS has three main learning outcomes including provision of immediate and urgently needed benefits to crisis-affected livestock owning communities. Secondly, protect the livestock related assets of these crisis-affected communities, and lastly, to assist households in rebuilding their key assets so that they can recover in a timely manner.
He also stated that FAO celebrates 40 years of dedication implementing programmes and giving effective representation in the country and are grateful for the support of all its partners, including research institutes, academia, private sector, humanitarian agencies and governments worldwide in supporting its mission in Nigeria.
He said: “Food and Agriculture Organisation’s livestock interventions go back as far as the 1960s with field missions to Nigeria to help affected populations manage transboundary animal diseases like Rinderpest, which affected a substantial proportion of national cattle herd in 1963.
“Livestock rearing, as you know may appreciate, is a major livelihood in much of Nigeria, particularly along the northern areas of the country, which houses an estimated 70 per cent of all ruminants and about 80 per cent of the nation’s cattle.
“With support of the government and people of Nigeria as well as our resource partners, FAO has been able to implement emergency and recovery efforts of the livestock sector in north-eastern Nigeria. For example, since the start of 2018, FAO has distributed about 40,400 goats to 10, 100 households across the IDP camps and host communities in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States to restock their lost productive assets.
“FAO has also vaccinated 300, 000 animals benefiting about 80, 000 people and provided 570 tonnes of animal feed 4, 680 households to cover the lean season. ”
He further stated that more than 17, 000 goats will be distributed to about 4, 400 households until December 2018, while 7, 200 households in north-east Nigeria will receive poultry kits before the end of 2018.
He also promised that as livestock has been a big business in the country. “FAO will work towards more sustainable and profitable industries and production system with positive benefits for households’ food and nutrition security and general standard of living.”
However, he noted that many people who depend on livestock have been faced with challenges including climate-related issues including drought, erratic rainfall and floods, volatility of local and global markets and armed conflict in areas like the North-East of the country.
Meanwhile, in his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Bukar Hassan, who was represented by the Director of Animal Husbandry, John Taiwo, described LEGS as apt, which will build the capacity of critical stakeholders and boost confidence in the process of attendance to the national contemporary challenges in the industry.

2019: Buhari can’t get 10 percent Ondo votes from Akeredolu – APC group

A faction of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State known as “Ondo APC Mandate”, has accused the State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, of deliberately causing friction and acrimony within the party.
The group, which spoke on Monday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, maintained that the alleged high-handedness of Gov. Akeredolu has greatly disintegrated and fictionalised the party in the state.
Chairman of the group, Comrade Olorunfemi Michael said the Governor deliberately created what is known in the state as “Aketi Group” as a way of shutting out other loyal members of the party.
“It is evidently clear to all and sundry in Ondo APC that anybody who is not a member of Aketi group within APC is not a bona-fide member of APC.
“This has gone a long way to create unnecessary opposition and division within the party in the state,” he said.
Michael, who called for the intervention of the party’s national leadership into the crisis, stated that with the situation of things at present, and the zero performance of the Akeredolu’s administration, it would be a herculean task for APC to secure victory come 2019.
“In fact, if not for some party stalwarts who are close to the presidency, 75 per cent of our members would have defected to other political parties.
“Before it is too late, we urge our national APC led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to as a matter of urgency, wade into Ondo APC crisis, because we don’t want Mr. President to lose in Ondo State.
“All what has been caused by Gov. Akeredolu in the state, is de-marketing the political future of both the APC and Mr. President. As it stands, Mr President cannot get 10 per cent votes from Akeredolu-led government if it continues like this.”

Disgrace lecturers involved in sexual harassment – NUC tells VCs

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has charged Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities to publish the names of lecturers found wanting over allegations of sexual harassment of their students.
The Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, gave this charge at the Redeemer’s University in Ede, Osun, on Monday.
He said this in a keynote address he presented at the 33rd annual conference of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU).
The V-C said that since he took over the leadership of the NUC two years ago, he and his team had been working on reforms to improve the university education in the country.
He said that the reforms had been working and helping to reduce the ratio of corruption in the university system.
Rasheed, however, said that the major challenge at the moment had been allegations of sexual harassment by lecturers against their students.
“Our major crisis now is sexual harassment.Whether we like it or not, I want to charge the AVCNU at this meeting to make it a priority in the communique, to take a decisive action on this challenge.
“The universities should be willing to punish and stamp out the incidences of sexual harassment, because it is damaging to our collective reputation; and we just have to do something.
“Please say it and do it; and whenever you punish or sanction somebody in this regard, let your effort be duly publicised.
“Let the world know that somebody has lost his or her job because of sexual harassment or somebody has been demoted from being a Professor to Lecturer1 because of sexually harassing a student.
“We, in the NUC, will be helping you.We can be collecting the names of the offenders monthly and advertising in all the newspapers to expose them as culprits of sexual harassment, because we are determine to fight them.
“This is one area of academic corruption we are fighting.
“If lecturers that were told not to take advantage of innocent girls and boys in the universities decide to do so because they have the power to award marks, then we will equally fight them,” he said.

2019: North should stop deceiving South-east with Igbo presidency – Fr. Ebubemuonso

Ahead of the 2019 general electons, Charismatic Anambra Catholic Priest, Reverend Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, popularly known as Ebubemonso has cautioned the South-east against being deceived by the promise of Igbo presidency in 2023.
The cleric spoke at his Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, Anambra State, when he received Eighteen (18) of the first Christian converts in Guangzhou, China, who arrived Nigeria as pilgrims.
The team comprising three Catholic priests, two Catholic Reverend Sisters and other Chinese Christians were accompanied by seven representatives of Nigerians resident in China.
In his sermon, Fr. Ebubemonso also cautioned against launching of Operation Python Dance 3 by the Nigerian Military.
“The problem of Nigeria is recycling of power and having said this I also want to warn that the Northerners should stop using Igbo Presidency 2023 to deceive Ndigbo as it is impossible to materialize unless by divine mandate,” he said, regretting that “Igbos are complacent in pursuing a collective interest, though quick to pull down their own brothers.”
Ebubemonso, who was visibly worried on the arrest, detention and incarceration of over 100 women in Imo State, described it as “a shame and a disgrace to President Muhammad Buhari’s government.”
While rejecting the plans by the military to establish operation Python dance 111 in the South East, Ebubemonso said “the Army should take the operation Python Dance 111 to Borno State and other states in the North East where Boko Haram is ravaging not in South East where there is peace.”
He raised alarm that the Python Dance mission was a sinister move to wipe some other youths after so many lost their lives during the Operation Python dance 11.
On the visit by the Chinese Christians, he said he saw the revelation many years ago that Uke community Adoration ground would be an attraction internationally for pilgrims as God had chosen it as a healing ground.
Fr Obimma who spoke on ” silencing the accuser ” asked Christians not to yield to the scheming of the enemy but to be focused and battle the devil to a standstill, then expand their internal horizon through wisdom to survive better.”
He encouraged Christians to pray for the Chinese Christians “as it is very difficult to worship Jesus Christ in such a Communist nation.”
He thanked Emeka Ugoagwu, the Divine Love prayer group China leader, for taking Charismatic movement to China, which heralded Christianity in the city of Guangzhou.
Addressing the congregation, leader of the Chinese delegation, Mary Lu appealed to Christians in Nigeria to pray for Chinese people to receive Jesus Christ in their lives as the only Lord and Savior.
Lu, who is the Coordinator of the Chinese Charismatic Group, Yide, road, Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral, Guangzhou, China recounted how they encountered Jesus Christ in Guangzhou City through Rev Fr Emmanuel Obimma, who he said God used to heal their brother suffering from a terminal cancer.
She said they accepted Jesus Christ in 2006 and that two years later encountered Rev Fr Ebubemonso who joined them to a hospital where their brother was counting his days on earth but God used Fr Ebubemonso to restore his health.
Lu said her team were in Nigeria on Pilgrimage, courtesy of Divine Love Prayer Group China led by its coordinator, Brother Emeka Ugoagwu, to learn the rudiments of serving Jesus Christ and evangelism.
Later in his speech, Mr Emeka Ugoagwu, coordinator of Divine Love Prayer Group China, confirmed the cancer healing story and announced that this was the first time such number of Chinese were living their shores to another country for a Church trip rather than business and other related engagements.
He explained to Fr Ebubemonso that the people of China were still waiting for him to return after God used him to restore health to the cancer patient, at least to spread the gospel in other parts of China not only Guangzhou.
An All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Governorship aspirant in Imo State, Steve Nwoga who attended the event, in an interview prayed God Almighty to grant the pilgrims the grace and anointing to preach the gospel in a communist country like China, to enable them overcome persecution and reach the over 1 billion Chinese in their country who do not know Jesus Christ.

Chief Kola Ajayi, the Chairman of the Star Alliance and leader of the minority parties, vowed that it is possible to defeat the APC in Lagos.
Chief Ajayi claimed that the coalition would run a zero money politics, no fake or forced endorsements and a no noise campaign because the present office holders have failed.
He said, “While these leaders continue to develop their children and families with commonwealth resources, they have designed and executed a plan to abandon and neglect the youths and women of the grassroots of the state.”

'I Killed Bob Marley' - Ex-CIA Agent Makes Shocking Confession 37 Years After His Death

79-year-old Bill Oxley, ex-agent of America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is re-writing the history of the death of reggae legend Bob Marley, claiming he actually killed the legend.

Marley tragically died aged only 36-years-old, leading music lovers world-wide to grieve as the Jamaican icon’s life and career were cut short following a four-year battle with cancer.
The story of cancer may seem untrue as startling claims have emerged from a deathbed confession made by an ex-CIA officer, where he admitted to the killing.
Oxley is alleged to have claimed the murder of Marley among 17 other assassinations for the American government between 1974 and 1985, at a time when he said the CIA “was a law unto itself.”
Oxley, who reportedly worked as an operative for the CIA for 29 years, is alleged to have said he was often used as a hitman on targets deemed to “represent a threat to the interests of the United States.”
In a purported interview shared widely online, he admitted having no problem with proceeding with the Bob Marley assassination because “I was a patriot, I believed in the CIA, and I didn’t question the motivation of the agency – I’ve always understood that sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the greater good.”
According to the conspiracy theory, Oxley used faked press credentials to gain access to Bob Marley at his Blue Mountain retreat; introducing himself as a famous photographer working for the New York Times, and gave Bob Marley a gift.
“I gave him a pair of Converse All Stars. Size 10. When he tried on the right shoe, he screamed out ‘OUUUCH.‘
“That was it. His life was over right there and then. The nail in the shoe was tainted with cancer viruses and bacteria. If it pierced his skin, which it did, it was goodnight nurse.”
“There had been a series of high-profile assassinations of counter-culture figures in the United States in the late sixties, early seventies. By the time Bob Marley’s time came around, we thought subtlety was the order of the day. No more bullets and splattered brains.”
Mr. Oxley says he kept close contact with Marley during the final years of his life, ensuring the medical advice he received in Paris, London and the United States “would hasten his demise rather than cure him.”
“The last time I saw Bob before he died he had removed the dreadlocks, and his weight was dropping like a stone,” he says.
“He was very withdrawn, unbelievably small. He was shrinking in front of us. The cancer had done it’s job.”
Although widely dismissed as fiction, the account does tally with findings by UK scientists in 2014, who discovered the mysterious acral melanomas – the rare type of skin cancer that caused reggae musician’s demise – was in fact not caused by the sun.
CIA: Alleged CIA operative Bill Oxley supposedly made a deathbed confession
Bob Marley’s soon Ziggy has previously implied his Father was killed, saying in a 2013 interview about the death: “I don’t know what to believe … there are a lot of theories.”
In the late 1970s, Jamaica was flooded with cheap guns, heroin, cocaine, right-wing propaganda, death squad rule and, as Grenada’s Prime Minister Maurice Bishop described it three years later, the CIA’s “pernicious attempts [to] wreck the economy.”
“Destabilization,” Bishop told the emergent New Jewel Party, “is the name given the most recently developed method of controlling and exploiting the lives and resources of a country and its people by a bigger and more powerful country through bullying, intimidation and violence.”
In response to the fascistic machinations of the CIA, Marley wove his lyrics into a revolutionary crucifix to ward off the cloak-and-dagger “vampires” descending upon the island.
The CIA, which has denied any involvement in Marley’s death, has been approached for a comment.

Akwa Ibom govt debunks Akpabio’s claim on completion of hotel

The Akwa Ibom State government on Monday described as false the claim by the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio that the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Ikot Ekpene was over 98 per cent completed as at the time he left office in 2015.
The reaction came following publications in some national dailies of Saturday, August 25,
2018 where the All Progressives Congress (APC) alleged that the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene was over 98 per cent completed as at the time Senator Godswill Akpabio vacated office in 2015.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh and made available to DAILY POST, the Commissioner said it sounded ludicrous for the immediate past governor to allege that his administration fulfilled all franchise requirements with Starwood Hotels and Resort for the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel and that the current administration was only expected to pay the fees when it fell due in 2015.
Udoh, who said that the present state government would not have dignified “such brazen lies” with a response but that it was expedient to react in order to set the record straight, disclosed that the immediate past governor commissioned the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene without a signed Franchise agreement and full complement of requisite furniture and fittings.
He further said that 95 per cent of the total contract sum was approved and disbursed by the immediate past governor as building and site improvement cost and the worldwide standard for building and site improvement cost component of a full-service 4-star hotel in an emerging market is 64 per cent of the total cost of the hotel – (Hospitality Valuation Services HSV)
The Akwa Ibom government therefore challenged Senator Akpabio to validate his claims of having fulfilled the requisite contractual obligations with Starwood Hotel & Resort for the Four Points by Sheraton franchise by publishing a copy of the signed management agreement and a copy of the Certificate of Incorporation of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) he used for the transaction, stressing that the SPV that manages the transaction on behalf of the Akwa Ibom State Government; Raffia City Hotels and Tours Limited, was incorporated on June 11, 2015; more than one month after Senator Akpabio had commissioned the hotel.
Pressing further, Udoh queried Senator Akpabio on why the hotel which he claimed to have commissioned was unable to start operations before the end of his administration? and why there were no guest traffic count and/or feasibility study carried out to justify the N25.4bn investment in a 146 room hotel?
He also asked: Why were external caterers hired to bring in food if the kitchen and dining facilities were ready, equipped and commissioned? and why the hotel is a subject of discussion now; three years after it was supposedly commissioned?
Part of the statement read, “It has become necessary for the public to know who is telling a lie and we feel obligated to state as follows:
1. That immediate past Governor commissioned the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene without a signed Franchise agreement and full complement of requisite furniture and fittings.
We challenge immediate past Governor to validate his claims of having fulfilled the requisite contractual obligations with Starwood Hotel & Resort for the Four Points by Sheraton franchise by publishing a copy of the signed management agreement.
When was the agreement signed? Who were the signatories and witnesses to the transaction?
Which Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) was used in signing the agreement before vacating office.
The SPV that manages the transaction on behalf of the Akwa Ibom State Government; Raffia City Hotels and Tours Limited was incorporated on June 11, 2015; more than one month after Senator Akpabio had commissioned the hotel. (Certificate of Incorporation attached).
To set the records straight, the Senator should also publish a copy of the Certificate of Incorporation of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) he used for the transaction.
Regrettably, it paints an unpalatable picture of mischief for the immediate past Governor; a lawyer by profession, to present an unsigned and unverified press statement in the Nation newspaper of July 12, 2014 as evidence of a legal contractual obligation on a high networth project as one in question. This is a brazen and unremorseful attempt at demeaning the intelligence of the good people of Akwa Ibom State.
Who benefited from the over 95% payment his administration disbursed on a half-completed hotel?
While the Akwa Ibom State Government is reluctant to engage in a mudslinging combat with anybody, we will provide more facts to justify who is telling the truth and who is lying when the questions asked are answered.”

Enugu West: Buhari’s loyalists attack Ekweremadu’s aide

Loyalists of President Muhammdu Buhari under the aegis of Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) Enugu State on Monday chastised Mr.Luke Mgbo, a media aide to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, for what they called misrepresentation of the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. OsitaOkechukwu.
Okechukwu, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and ardent supporter of President Buhari recently announced his interest to vie for Enugu West senatorial seat in 2019.
There are, however, speculations that Senator Ekweremadu, who currently represents Enugu West on opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, intends to return to the Senate in 2019.
But, in a press statement, BSO Secretary, Mr. Godwin Onwusi, frowned at “the misrepresentation of VON DG by Mr. Luke Mgbo, regardingEnugu West senatorial district.”
Onwusi equally flayed Mgbo for conferring on himself a political status he does not enjoy in Ekeward in Udi LGA,
Enugu State, where both him and DG VON hail from.
“In the firstinstance, Mr. Mgboh gave the impression that
Mr. Osita Okechukwu said that hewould retire Sen.Ike Ekweremmadu from politics. This is far from what Mr. Okechukwu said.
“In the statement released by Mr. Okechukwu which is still inthe public domain, what Mr, Okechukwu said is that he wants to retire Sen.Ekweremmadu from the Senate , not from politics.
“There is no denying the fact that Sen. Ekweremmadu, having stayed in the senate for 16 years, is due for retirement from thesenate, so that he can pursue other higher positions in the polity. This is more so considering that he comes from Enugu West Senatorial Zone with
abundanthuman resources. Even within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the clamor toretire him from the senate is popular. Among those within the PDP clamoring toretire him from the senate are Prof. AguGab Agu and Chief Barr. O.A.U. Onyema.
“Mr.Mgboh further contended that APC has no place in the East. This shows that he is still living in the past. Granted that prior to the 2015 elections, APC had very scanty support in the South East, the situation is no longer the same now.
“The rate at which seasoned and tested politicians fromthe South East are joining the APC now is an indication of the desire of thepeople of the South East to hook the National grid of politics and theincreasing approval rating of President Buhari in the South East. Permit me togive a few examples.
“In Ebonyi State Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Sen. Julius Ucha and Hon. Peter Ede have now beenjoined in the APC by H.E chief Martin Elechi (immediate past Governor of theState), Sen. AzuAgboti, Sen. Sunny Ogbuoji, Sen. Chris Nwankwo, Sen. AnthonyAgbo, Sir Edward Nkwegu, Dr. Odoh (immediate past secretary to the StateGovernment), Chief Augustine
Nwankwegu (immediate past Speaker of the House ofAssembly) and a host of others.
“In Enugu State, Emma Eneukwu, Okey Ezea (Ideke),Osita Okechukwu, Onyemuche Nnamani, Group Capt. Joe Orji (Rtd), Dr. Ben Nwoye,Juliet Ibekaku have now been fortified with the coming in of Mr. GeoffreyOnyeama (foreign affairs minister), His Excellencies Chief Jim Nwobodo, Sullivan Chime and Ken Nnamani, Rt. Hon. Eugene Odo, Chief
Gbazuagu N.Gbazuagu, Barrister Ifeanyi Nwoga, Hon. K.G.B. Oguakwa and a host of others,” Onwusi said.
The BSO scribe said in Anambra State, SenatorChrisNgige has now been fortified by the coming in of seasoned politicians likeSen. Andy Uba, Sen. Uche Ekwunife, Hon. Tony Nwoye, Hon. Charles Odedo and ahost of others, while in Abia State, the coming into the APC of Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Sen. Nwogu, Hon. Uche Hon. Nkiru Onyejiocha and a host of
others, which fortifiedIkechi Emenike and company, would surely turn the tide.
Coming to Imo, an APC state, Onwusi said the entranceinto the APC of prominent Imo Politicians like Sen. Hope Uzodimma would help Governor Okorocha, Sen. Ararumme, Sen. Izunaso, Sen. Uwajumogu, Hon. Nwajuba, Hon. Ohajuruka, H.E Eze Madumere and a host of others to consolidate the APC hold in Imo state.
He noted that majority of those he mentioned above and many he did not mention were not in the APC during the 2015 elections and it therefore, baffled him why Mr. Mgboh still saw APC in the South East the way it was seen, prior to the 2015 elections.
On the challenge thrown by Mgbo to VON DG to contend with him and see if he would defeat me him (DG) in Eke Ward before going to Udi, not to talk of Enugu West Zone, Onwusi responded: “By this statement, Mr. Mgboh has not only arrogated to himself the political stature he does not have in Eke but has also presented himself as the personification of the PDP in Eke Ward.
“He has also belittled other PDP stakeholders in Ekewho I know, as an indigene, command more followership than himself, such as OzoDamian Ozoani, Steve Igweze, Mike Oguama, Bona Udeh, and a host of others.
“Mr. Mgboh lied, and he knows it, when he said ‘Osita isan Abuja politician that doesn’t know anybody at the grassroot’. As anindigene of Eke, I know that Mr. Mgboh does not have up to one percent of Mr.Okechukwu’s popularity in Eke. This is an assertion that anybody canverify in the six villages that make up Eke Ward. Mr. Mgboh is not even amatch in popularity to Mr. Okechukwu’s associates and lieutenants in Eke likemyself, Emeka Udeh, Philip Eze and OssyAkahalu.
“Every APC member in Enugu State, including PDP members, know that Eke is the ‘capital’ of APC in Enugu State, courtesy of Mr. Osita Okechukwu.
“That was why it took a contingent of notless than 600 boys and PDP big wigs, imported into Eke from all parts of EnuguState, during the recently conducted Local Government elections, to save Mr. Mgbohand all the PDP stakeholders in Eke from the electoral strength of APC in theward.
“Of course, Mr. Mgboh knows that such a scenario cannot happen againduring the 2019 General Elections. The appointment of Mr. GeoffreyOnyeama as the Minister for Foreign Affairs has further fortified the strengthof the APC in Eke Ward and Mr. Mgboh knows this.
“I make bold to say that Eke Ward isno longer a safe haven for PDP. It is now a domain of the APC and the2019 elections will prove this.”

Ambode: Lagos Assembly speaks on fighting governor over election money

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reacted to allegation that the move to impeach Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was for selfish reasons....
